i would like to add a few coments to the numerous excellent comments re: NVE3 and dvd slideshows.
I agree that temperatureis an issue that must be addressed. Related to this is overclocking. It leads to a temperature rise (even it voltages are not increased) and so contributes to instability. I believe that mp3pro sound files in variable bitrate and/or high bitrate may be a factor althounh I have yet to pin this down. i suspect that nve does not like high bitrate jpegs / Progressive scan as well.
At this point I have sucessfully encoded a dvd with mp3 sound - 3 slideshows and 290 slides in total + files saves to the disk as jpegs. I feel cautiously optimistic at this point.
My images are from a film camera scanned at 2M.Oixels and 8 MP.

Quote: I agree that temperatureis an issue that must be addressed. Related to this is overclocking. It leads to a temperature rise (even it voltages are not increased) and so contributes to instability.
I can pretty much eliminate temperature from my equation. I can assure you that it is not an issue.
I've had my computer pegged at 100% cpu usage for over 24 hours doing some batch jobs in Virtualdub during the summer in my un-airconditioned apartment with it being in the high 80s outside with no issues at all.
Meanwhile, I get random instability problems doing a 15 minute transcode during the fall when it's about 65 degrees in my place.
So far, I've been stonewalled trying to track down the issue. I ran the same job again last night with the window in focus and the application froze transcoding the last title for the disc (it should be noted that the source files were already DVD Spec MPEG2 so FFDShow really can't be blamed here as I do not think it handles MPEG2 playback.)
Also, that time, it didn't manage to crash my computer nor did it produce any errors. It just...stopped. Notice I said stopped and not froze, because there's a difference. The buttons on the interface were still able to be clicked and I could move the window around to my heart's content. However, it wouldn't abort and it wouldn't finish. I couldn't even kill it with end task so I had to reboot the computer.
After rebooting, I tried it again. Same project, same background processes running, yet this time the whole process went through without a hitch. One thing I did notice though is that the preview display updated less frequently as the disc was being compiled. Since these were already MPEG2 files, the transcoding step is very quick and runs at about 100fps. At the beginning of the process, the preview window was updated quickly. Near the end, it was almost a slideshow.
However, I am now left with the inability to reproduce the crash. Next I am going to try running my TV card once before the process. The first time I ran it and it crashed I was not on a fresh reboot. The computer had been on for a bit and I was watching a little TV with my TV card and Descaler. I wondering if maybe running anything that accesses a video overlay before doing a project is bad news. I'm just grasping straws here bascially. We will see.

Well installed the last update and gave NV3 a shot converting PAL to NTSC. I would stack the PAL VOB's, merge them and create chapter stops. I have done this many times in the past with good results. This time I ended up with a garbled picture. Went back to NV2 and it worked fine. Never got around to trying a slide show.

*SIGH*
Died again. On a fresh reboot no less.
Tried a different compilation. 5 xvid avi files and 1 mpeg2 file.
It "stopped" 25% into the first file.
Again, stopped means not crashed, it just gave up. The Elapsed counter is still running for the total progress bar, but not for the current progress bar. Abort does nothing. I have to hard reboot to kill Nerovision (windows will not shutdown with it running).
There is something very fundamentally wrong with this application. It's been a long time since I've had something play this badly with my OS.
The very last thing in my NeroVision log is
******
[20:35:46] GCHW Node added: Microsoft Kernel Audio Mixer
******
Which matches the last thing in the log that someone else posted here.

After getting loads of runtime errors I reinstalled everything but now get the [20:44:02] GCHW Node added: Microsoft Kernel Wave Audio Mixer fault or just random freezes and crashes.
This programme is unbelievalbly buggy and it is not worth bothering with until it has had a major overhaul.

Did an export this time instead of trying to burn the dvd.

I wish these things were a little better documented. I would love to know what this stuff means so I could TRY to get around it.

Guess what guys? WE HAVE PROGRESS.
At least for all you win2k people out there crashing at the Kernel Audio Mixer.
Knowledgebase Article KBB19745
http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/details.aspx?FamilyId=ECEC89B5-A2F6-44E4-8B9D-62DA64EC9689&displaylang=en
It's an update for kmixer.sys which is the Kernel Audio Mixer driver. It changed my version from 5.00.2195.6655 to 5.00.2195.6752. I am now past the point where the AVI file would crash in the encoding process and it's still going. I got about 15 minutes left, but it's looking good so far.
As far as I know, there is no similar update for Windows XP. Why? Microsoft maintains that this is not an issue with kmixer.sys but a problem with whatever software is crashing while using it. Since I don't write programs interfacing with WDM kernel streaming drivers, I don't really know who's right or wrong here.
HOWEVER
Maybe this will give the Ahead people a better focus to at least fix some of these crashes.
*15 minutes later*
"Export Process Completed Succesfully"
WOOHOO
Now time to try the whole thing, all 6 files. Will report back tomorrow with results.

Success is fleeting.
In my big project, I got 3 files encoded before the exact same "stopping" happened again.
I look in the log file and what do I see?
*********

I suppose I can go back and encode these files all seperately like I did the last poject, but this is really getting old.

Has anyone had any success with resolving the "Runtime" error problem? I successfully created a dvd from a single mpeg2 file with no chapters, transition, etc. Then I tried creating a movie with 5 chapters but no transitions or motion menus, & I got a Runtime Error after 8 minutes of transcoding. I had minimized to tray & no other programs were running. When I clicked ok on the error box, the program simply closed, no log file.

I have had the same problems here that most others have had.
During my encoding (when it's doing menus) Nero will freeze about 80% of the time. It just hangs there with "no responding" in the task bar.
I did the clean install, did all the updates, etc. Doesn't work right.
Is this a buggy piece of software, or am I braindead?
Can anyone recommend something else to copy my AVI files into a DVD-Video that is pretty much wizard-based or simple?

I have been able to produce a good DVD by simply not using all the special features. ie Animated Buttons.
As mentioned before Nero would for no reason shut down on its own within minutes of the transcoding process butONLY if the animate tick box was checked.and also using a slideshow with random transitions.
I recently upgraded my PC because I thought It was a hardware fault, spent a fortune on this one and was shocked to find that it had the same problems.
The other thing that I did was to burn it to hard drive first then burn on to DVD.
For my production I used Ulead Media studio 7 to capture & edit the footage.
I captured it from a Sony DV camera and compressed it to Mpeg 2 to save time later when rendering.
the end result was 4 short clips ranging from 2 minutes to 9 minutes and finaly a 14 minute clip
I then used Nero to create my Menu and slide shows
I had 6 slideshows that had between 44 to 67 pictures in each all with random transitions and mp3 soundtracks.
This is my system spec:

Other than the ocassional random crash to desktop with no error, I too am getting transcoding problems, where the overall burn process timer keeps on ticking but the "transcoding Menu 1" timer stops, and nothing gets done.
I was able to fix this problem when I turned off all menu animations. Also, on a side note, when menu animations were on, the menu preview button did work, although only the last button on any given menu would be animated.
These are repeatable problems. I was able to burn a DVD with menu animations once before the October update was released, though still only the last menu item would be animated. So my problems at least seem to be linked to the way that menu animations are handled.
Hope this helps.

I haven't used animated menus in any of my compilations, so that is not the root of my problem.

I have been getting some strange results with dvd of slides 2-3 shows long - about 180+ images nve 3 and 3.0.1.4
I have not had the shutting down since nn.18 but shows dont work on SOME players. In one case not at all, in the other the menu refused to work but it you pressed play the slide show ran with out error. Sould this be due to the short lead out? (One ot the players - an Omni - has been ocnsistently reliable and able to play anything put in it?
HOW ABOUT A UTILITY TO CONVERT VERSION 2 PROJECTS TO 3??

I second (or third) everyone here with sucess due to no animated menus.
I have burned 2 or 3 dvds sucessesfully by not using animated menus.
I also found an issue where if you have many chapters, and try to change properties on each clip (to rename, or set the image for example) the program would hang.
I've been basically reduced to just a static image, and not renaming any of the clips.
Just wish this thing was a little more fleshed out and stable, it's very user friendly.

Hellow Everyone,
I've been on the road for the past few weeks, so I have not been able to address this issue properly. Now that I am back, and hopefully do not have any plans to travel for a few weeks, I can concentrate on this issue again.
For the next week, I will be testing this issue to try and isolate the problem. I'll keep you posted with my findings. Once I can isolate the issue more, I can generate a bug report to have the issue addressed.
Regards,
Craig

I am getting the error message
Microsoft Visual C++ Runtime Library
Runtime Error!
This application has requested the Runtime to terminate it in a unusual way. Please contact the application's support team for more information.
I thought that the update would solve the sticking problem, but its just created another one!

Hi everyone,
Thanks for the excellent posts - I have learned a lot about NV 2 and 3 - will try to install 3 tonight. My issue hasn't really come up here - once I begin transcoding - I don't have a problem, but my audio and video aren't sync'd up - the audio runs faster than the video. Does anyone know what could be causing that?
As well - I heard of a number of different codecs - the TMPGEnc, the huffyuv - which of these will give me the highest quality video - I'm trying to move my MiniDV tapes to DVD of my daughter, so I don't want to lose picture resolution.

Just wanted to post a thanks to Megardi for suggesting FFDShow! Installed it and managed to transcode 8 video/DivX files and burn my first two succesful DVD's! First time I've been able to transcode anything without the program hanging on me. Very exciting to have it finally work.
Thanks!

Had another weird problem where I made a dvd movie (w/o animated buttons) of a 800mb AVI file, it took about 1.5 - 2 hrs.
I made that same movie again a few days later and it took 8 - 9 hours.
Is that normal?

bull3964,
Thats exactly the same problem that I was getting with the Tech Support at Ahead. They were constantly asking for information that I had sent several times previously. They just don't read the emails properly and you usually get a generic reply either asking you to do something that you've already done or to do something that you know won't work for your particular problem. Its very very frustrating, not to mention poor and inefficient. I was thankful that Craig Campbell from Ahead reads these forums as that was the only thing that kept me sane.
I think that Ahead need to do an awful lot of work to bring their support facilities up to an acceptable standard for their CUSTOMERS. It would be nice if they had their own support forums for customers on their website like many other software companies do. At least that way we could discuss issues constructively with other users and techical support people at Ahead.

Yes Im seeing the same poor support as this and you are not likely to be finished yet. What they are likely to tell you next is that they havn't seen your probleeem before and what you should do now is completely unstall Nero, run the registry clean tool and then reinstall the latest version (they've done this to me twice now and it didn't solve what was an underlying application problem with Nero).
I did this about three weeks ago and then found that all the elements except the main burning ROM program refused to recognise my licence key and was just acting as a trail version. I responded back with this issue but am still awasiting a reply (*fixed it with a system restore later).
We do seem to be getting a much better level of support from Craig on this forum than we do using the official channels. Perhaps Craig could report this to his management?
