I would like to "upgrade" the cooling on the GeForce 6200. Its an EVGA GeForce 6200 with 256megs ram.
The stock cooler, unfortunately, is passive and the fins are too wide to screw a fan on top.
Also, i would like to add, i do not want to buy a cooler for this card, i just want something that i could make with parts laying around (fans, heatsinks, etc).
The purpose of "upgrading" the cooling is to be able to overclock as i have another system with 8800's in SLI that can run Unreal Tournment 3 easily but this system can not, and that means no LAN party.
Thank you for taking the time to read this...

The 6200, even when overclocked will be dump. Nothing you can cobble together, or even a professional high-end heatsink will get that card playing UT3 properly.

I'm sorry I can't help more specifically, but that's about all there is to it. As for attaching a fan to the stock cooler, you can use cable ties quite inventively to attach a fan to a heatsink. I even do it in my PC.... (the normal method with my CPU heatsink was a bit fiddly, so cable tie was the easier option!). On the whole, 6200s are supposed to overclock quite well, but I still don't think you can run UT3 on it. If you need something that will get you buy for a LAN, you could probably find a cheap 7600 on ebay.

Okay, i will look into that. Thank You
One more question, is there any bios upgrade or some kind of volt mod for the 6200 that you know about?
Thanks

Quite likely, but I don't know how much of a performance benefit you'd get. If you do proceed with that, you will definitely need to improve the card's cooling. Is it an AGP or PCI express card?

It is an AGP.

You should be able to get a decent performance boost, although obviously be aware of the risks of voltmodding graphics hardware.
Here's a cool looking guide I found that may help:
http://www.aoaforums.com/frontpage/content/view/1190/30/
Try not to be over-zealous with the voltage, as since the 6200 takes power directly from the AGP slot and doesn't receive an additional boost from the PSU, you could cause current problems with the AGP bus if you overdo it.
This article from VR-Zone recommends no higher than 1.36V.

Thank you very much for that site.

the motherboard the card is on...
http://www.motherboards.org/reviews/motherboards/1477_1.html
i have a geforce 6200 PCI-E laying around too, would i be able to run SLI on this mobo even though its not an Nvidia chipset?
The motherboard has an "AGP Expess" slot and a regular PCI-E slot...
thanks

Hmm, I don't usually rate the build quality of ECS boards, but hats off to them, AGP express is an interesting idea.
Unfortunately you will not be able to use SLI on this board as firstly, you do indeed require an nvidia chipset, and secondly, 6200 cards are not SLI compatible.

thank you, i will try the volt mod
but what i do not understand is that my card's layout is different from the one on that site, so how would i know which pin is which?
Thanks

Unfortunately cards differ from different brands. The layout should be quite similar though, can you find that part of the PCB on it?

well, PCB might not have a model number, it's really just down to trying to find where on your PCB the parts highlighted in that guide are.
I've never voltmodded a graphics card myself, so I'm not entirely sure where to go looking for the resistors.

ok thanks
in the mean time i drilled a socket A heatsink to fit on to the gpu, unfortunately i cant find any screwas that are thin enouht to go throght the card and long enough to reach the heatsink.
I have also managed to stab my self with a screw driver right into the index finger, hehe. (that explains my bad grammar as i can only type with 9 fingers....)
Thank uo for all your help

Lol don't worry about it I only type with my index fingers anyway...
As for the heatsink, I imagine a socket A heatsink would do a better job than the one on the card, although you'll want to use proper thermal grease to attach it. You can't just shove it on in place of the existing one. Get a means of wiping off the existing thermal compound (window & glass cleaner seems to do the job alright, but be careful with it, do this with the graphics card out of the PC) and then put on some new stuff, preferably Arctic silver V.
Note: If you don't do this, the graphics card will probably overheat. Stock thermal compound is not usually reusable. As soon as you take the old heatsink off that's it.

i use this: http://www.zerotherm.net/eng/common/zerotherm.asp
i used some ear cleaning thingies in conjunction with some rubbing alcohol to clean the core, now its nice and shiny.
i will continue this adventure tomorrow, thank you for all the help you have provided. You gave me some ideas i would have never though of myself and i am grateful for that.
lol, i guess if you had damaged your index fnger, that would mean you would have had 50% typing speed. hehe
random question.... do you play quake 3?

Oh man, a little bit a while back. I like my fast paced FPS action, but I dunno, I was never introduced to the Quake series until quite late. I really enjoy Quake 4, and also like Q3, although it's getting a bit old now, it's still good fun.
As for the thermal grease, what is it you're using? You just linked me to the Zerotherm website, no specific page in particular.

I have a 6200 with no cooling or overclocking, and can run UT3 fine.

Just adjust for low end settings

the trouble then i suppose must be the motherboard (its an ECS)
thanks for the input
the problem i am having is that the menu screen freezes after about ten seconds into the game being loaded up (not mission, the actual game)
do you have the piplines enabled? (the 8 pipeline mod?)
thanks
