Hi all,

I hope some gurus out there can help wth this.
I am setting up a home network with a NAS box. All pc's will either run XP Media Centre or Vista.
What i want to do is copy all our dvd's including menus (if possible)to the NAS box.
I then want to be able to watch them via the media centre by clicking through the media centre movie library.
Is this possible? with XP or Vista.
Or would it be better to just rip the main movie and convert it to a format that XP or Vista media centre will recognise?
Ideally a straight clone of the dvd and menus would be preferable.
They are all my own dvd's, i basically just want to create a library of everything we have on a central share, so we don't need to put discs in machines anymore, and then anyone can just browse the NAS box (via media center?) and click on a movie and watch it.
Is it possible?

Many thanks for any advice offered.

If space isn't a premium (5 to 8 GB per movie) I'd rip them and store them as ISO files. Then you can play the ISO using VLC Media Player and the menus and extras are all there. You could use Ant Movie Catalog to keep track of them and you could even write a small script in Ant to launch VLC with the chosen movie. But that's because those are the tools I'm familiar with.

I'm using Windows Vista Ultimate media edition and using anyDVD to rip my DVDs to my hard drive. I play my DVDs with windows media center off my PC or with media extenders such as Xbox 360 or D-link DSM-750.

To play DVDs off your hard drive in Vista media center you have to do a small regedit in Windows. This is because, unlike previous XP versions of WMC, this isn't how you play DVD folders in Vista. Rather than playing DVDs from the Videos section, you need to use the DVD Library which is located in the TV & Movies section. If this is not enabled (i.e. you can't see it in the main menu), you need to edit the registry.
Here is the required registry edit:
Registry key: HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Media Center\Settings\DvdSettings
Registry value: ShowGallery
Registry value data type: REG_SZ
Registry value data: Gallery = enable My DVDs; Play = do not enable My DVDs
Change the setting to "Gallery", reboot the computer and restart Media Center. You should now see "dvd library" in the menu. If you store your DVD in myvideos the will show up and will play. If not, To add DVDs, go to the information menu (click "i" on the remote control) and select "Add Movies".
I then use DVD library manager to add DVD covers and DVD information and I have a full DVD media server.
I do recommend dedicating a PC just as media server if you use media extenders and play video from multi room extenders.

I can't help you with Media Centre/Vista as i use neither; i like the idea of NAS boxes but think they're too overpriced from what i'd seen; so i went down the xbox route; have you considered adding one or more old xboxes (they're like £40 these days) to the mix ?; all my AVI movies/DVD movies&concerts/music/music videos are on various huge hard drives on my main PC, (backups of which are in a few USB2.0 enclosures) - all of which are networked/shared. Anyways, an old xbox using XBMC is fantastic for a media machine; the only thing it won't be capable of is playing HiDef content as it's CPU isn't capable enough..

Hi NYTECH,

I have made the registry change as suggested and I see My DVDs (apollo 13 and Vertigo showed up) in Media Center for Vista Ultimate.

I have a complete DVD converted to the Video_TS and Audio_TS but it is not showing up in the list.

What folder should these be stored in? There is no MYVideos folder on my machine...

DVD Library Manger? Is this a program? If so where do I find it...

Thanks for any help
I have a 1.5 TB raid array and have no issues with 4GB per movie...

I think the Apollo 13 and Vertigo are sample videos that come with Windows Vista. When I rip a DVD I make a folder and name the folder the same as the movie then put the Video_TS and Audio_TS in the folder. I then put the movie in My Videos in my documents. If you don?t have a My video I would just make a new folder and call it My Videos and put in my documents. Media centre should find the folder by default, if not add the new folder in Media centre as a folder to monitor and you should be good to go.

Not sure if you can post links or not but here is the setup link for the dvd library manager.

Thanks!

I figured out how to repoint the Public Videos folder to my Media drive, and used the DVD library manger to add a cover to the DVD!

Thanks a lot, this is exactly what I was wanting.

Any Ideas on getting the DVD menu to appear on an Xbox360?

I don't have an Xbox 360 and not sure how you have set it up so I can't help there. I do know that the xbox360 will work as media extenders for windows media center. If you have not set it up as a windows media extender, I would try that and see what happens. I know my movie covers show up on my d-link media extender.

Keep me updated

Yeah, I have it set up as a Media Extender,

Microsoft has been very slow with updates to the Media Extender portion of the XBox 360 which is very frustrating...

I want a 1 stop shop...without building a PC that sits in my living room...

Basicaly they have 2 ways to play music, view pictures, and video,

They keep updating one...but not the Media Extender portion...

So I can watch Divx, Avi, H.264 with what they call the video blade...but I want to use the Media Extender, so that I can watch my recorded TV, or switch to a movie...

mcpearson. You are now at the same stage as me.
I can use any of my vista pc's on the network to browse Media Center and pick and watch a dvd from my collection stored on the main vista pc.
BUT like you cannot get the xbox360 to see the 'dvd library'. I have been told that this is due to copyrighting procedures....not sure how or why though!?

Your ripped DVD should show up in pictures and Videos.

I use DVD library manager to add DVD cover art and DVD information. I put the DVD in my DVD drive, open DVD manager and it will look up the cover art information. Just save the information in the same folder as your ripped movie. The cover art should show up as well as movie information.

Solosid,
have you renamed your .jpeg pictures to 'folder'?
All i do is download an image of the dvd cover from google and save it as the name folder.jpeg into the root folder of that particular dvd. It certainly shows up in media center when done that way.

Hi Nytech,

can you share how you made your XBOX360 play DVD's from your hard drive? I was under the impression that MS intentionally excluded DVD playback from any Extender technology.

Also, does your D-Link extender play ripped DVD's as well? did you have to modify anything?

Thanks in advance

I don't have an Xbox 360 as a media extender. I just added the d-link to my computer as media extender and my DVD library shows up in my Pictures and video under video library. To make the DVD library show up I did make a mod to the windows reg (see above) but I have not done anything to the D-link media extender.

Hi banzaijoe

thanks for the help...

I've done that now...cheers

the problem was that the dvds was not showing in the DVD LIBRARY menu
just the PICTURE VIDEO LIBRARY....

I've sorted that now by right clicking in the DVD LIBRARY and selecting 'Add DVD'.... then i can choose individual files to add and these show as 'coverart'

is it possible to get avi's to show as 'coverart' (is that the right word for the covers)

cheers

Any help would be nice.

I have added the gallery to the reg. I can now see a dvd library in my vista media center. I have added a foler named it the dvd name. in the folder added the folder.jpg (to get the thumbnail) and added a folder titled video_ts (this contains the riped dvd)

I can play it with menues and everthing from my midea center.... it is PERFECT... no is there any way to us and extender to play it in another room.. I want to use the xbox media extender but the dvd libray is not visable in that room. Is there a hack for the xbox to allow this? I do not want to rename the vob fils.. this causes all of the menue to go away and looses the dvd functionality. PLEASE HELP if you have found any soultion..... Does anyone know if popcorn hour can make this work.. ?

Unfortunately XBOX cannot play VOB files from the network. The newer extenders such as the D-Link and Linksys can play VOB files over the network.

Thanks manta, good call. :)

the old xboxes can and do play vob files from the network.... you just need XBMC (xbox media centre) installed. just see my post further up this page - http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_jump.cfm/609745/3768164
