After many years of enjoying my ipod and many times of frezzing up today my 60 GB ipod photo won't reset after it's lastest episode. I looked on google and found a place that will send me a envelope to send it to them for free, then if I want to have them fix it they will quote me. If not I pay 7.50 $ and they ship it back.

Can I fix it my self if I don't know what is wrong with it should I crack it open? And, is this a scam for them to get my ipod. Tell me it is dead and will cost a fortune to fix and then try to keep it and refurbish it and sell it? Biggest question is can I fix it my self????

I don't think so...

It fix it you would have to know what is wrong first. However, If you are feeling lucky you can google for a drive and battery. I would upgrade to a bigger disk. If you are not lucky, you will not figure out how to fix it even with the parts most likely to fail and be out $$ and no ipod. They are cheaper and better now.

I would seriously shop for another ipod along with the parts and contemplate on just how lucky do you feel.

I would start it up one more time and slap it on the table smartly. I would guess the bearings in the hard drive are going. If you are lucky you may get a few more uses out of it. The drives only last a few years.

What are the symptoms? I repair iPods for a living, so I should know how to fix it.

If it is the "sad face" icon, often times it can be fixed by firmly hitting the bottom (where the connector is) on a deck of cards. It might sound crazy but I fixed like 5 iPods on a mission trip.

Another fix is to open the ipod up, and put a small bit of paper folded up between the harddrive and the back metal cover.

The fixes may sound weird but do work.

What is the best way to open it up with out damaging it? I would like to be able to keep it as a storage for my music. It usually just frezzes up and won't do anything If I put it up to my ear I can hear the hard drive clicking.

I use a metal tool that dentists use... don't ask. But before that I used a sharp pocket knife.

But there are numerous other ways to open them. Just search google for "opening 4th gen ipod".

If you can give me the symptoms I can know exactly how to fix it.

Like I was saying sometimes it will just freeze up, even with the light on. If I put my ear up against it I can hear the harddrive I believe turning and clicking. Then all of a sudden it was just dead I would plug it in tap it against the table, nothing. Would not respond at all. So I bought a new classic 80 GB ipod. So Went to try and pry open the old one and ding it came on again, had to charge it up but it works ok now still freezes up from time to time but a good whoop against it and it straightens out. I work in a coal mine so I use it all the time in dusty conditions, rough areas etc. So I would prefer to use the old one as long as possible. Is it the hard drive should I replace it? Joe
