Hi, I really need some help because I invested in getting the best dvd's and I have done everything right but my friends have told me that my discs arent working in there dvd players at all or incorrectly!
I recently bought 100 silver printable TY 16x dvd-r's and have used them for burning videos to. I had about 30 XVID videos which I converted to DVD using WinAvi. The videos played on my computer just fine and the converted DVD also played on the computer well. I then burnt using Nero.
I don't have any problems playing them on my dvd player or computer but my friends have complained saying they are not working for them or that they are skipping! How can this be when I got the best DVD'S IN THE WORLD? At first I thought it my be because they had an older dvd player which didn't support blank disc's but the mentioned trying serveral different players.
Should I use the TY's for myself and try VERBATIM next time?
Is it something to do with WINAVI not being compatible?
I really do need your help guys, Thanks.

What are you using for a burn speed? Keep it below 12X for 16X, 8X is better. Post your computer specs, avail RAM, CPU speed, do you multi task while you burn? Have you recently defragged your hard drive?

Agree with both sagely Sr.'s here.
Even using the best media can become null if one doesn't follow the best method.
As BlivetNC pointed out there's a couple of factors you could look at.
1. Burn Speed. Between 6x and 8x is a pretty safe bet.
2. There are no ill effects from refraining from multitasking while you burn.
3. Keep your drive clean.
4. Keep firmware updated.
5. Keep your pc defragged and the registry cleaned.
And of course the capabilities of your pc play an important role as BlivetNC pointed out.

100 silver printable tys?
What kind of printables, Inkjet or thermals?
Slapping any sticker labels on them?
Were they authentic tys? Look at the dye side near inner hub for a coding like: example-GGxxxxxx. Be sure to get a bright light to find that batch code.
What's the brand name, model#,and current firmware version of your dvd-rw drive?
They play ok for you but not your buds. Your stand alone player and the pc verified that, when they played them ok. Their players may prefer the plus format from your burner?
Sounds more like a compatability issue with your friends players..Booktype the plus format to dvd-rom to yield the highest compatability rate. Not all drives can do this,so post back your drive info and we'll tell you. If no booktyping capability, then try the plus format anyway. Their players just may prefer the plus format from your burner. Stick with the quality stuff like Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim.
You can still have the best discs in the world, but low quality drives will have a lower stand alone player compatability rate.
I'll also take a cheap $20 stand alone player anyday. They usually play anthing you slap in them. The fancier ones have the issues with playing dvd backups.
Also give 7thsingers post a gander. That's just some of the possible culptits when it comes to viewing dvd backups. A picky player can even be set off from certain burn engines.
Post back your drive info and we should be able to tell you which format to use.

I totally agree with saugmon's post. Take a real good look at the inner hub. You should see something like this:
4x dvd-r = TYG01 / GD00xxxx
8x dvd-r = TYG02 / GG00xxxx
16x dvd-r = TYG03 / GH00xxxx
99% of all problems are between the computer and the chair.

I have a $19.99 Toshiba from H.H. Gregg, plays everything flawlessly, wife bought a $149.99 Sony combo VHS/DVD player at about the same time, won't play any of the 16X media, no matter what the burning speed, +/- type, or booktype, go figure. Go cheapos!

Amen to that! My cheapo dvd player also plays more of my burned media, whereas my more expensive (also a Sony) refuses to play most of it.
I'll stick with the cheapies too.

That is because Oppo is into being consumer friendly, vs the other big companies.

Wow! Thanks guys for replying so soon. I would've stuck around longer but didn't expect so many replys in a day. Anyways, I realize that I didn't provide enough information so here goes..
Media:
Silver Inkjet printable 16x TYG03 DVD-R
(ordered from supermediastore.com, am printing direct to disc only)
Burner:
Lite-On DVDRW LH-20A1P KL0N
(recently bought at walmart, no firmware upgrades avail.)
-I was burning at 20x with nero and after reading your suggestions I burned a disc at 8x for my friend to try. This could very possibly be the reason. I will find out today or tmrw. if the 8x burn works.
-I do run one other program while burning to print labels at the same time, but this doesn't put too much of a load on my pc.
-I got DVD-R because i thought they were way more compatible than DVD+R. As I mentioned, I am trying to get the most compatibility that I can.
Thanks guys, please continue to help.

Litey's can booktype, but they have to have their own utility to do that task:
http://www.liteonamericas.com/us/download_utility.htm
Save that link for future-in case you need it.
On my Benq's,their booktyped backups play just about anywhere I desire. If I had to rely on the dash format only,it couldn't even touch that. Other burners,it may be the opposite. Just gotta figure out what format that suits your needs. Dash is working for you,but not your buds. I've even seen certain players have fits with a certain MID coded media and burn engine.

Good choice in burners.
Here is the link to check back for newer firmware updates but you are correct, you're up to date on this one.

I use a Litey and i love it. I actually went and bought a 2nd one, just in case.
It booktypes, it's quiet, burns good, updates more than most, and it was like $40.00.
Can't go wrong there.

I have 3 Liteys, all work great (in 2 different computers) all purchased from Newegg.com
One more thing TRIPP1N,
sometimes the DVD-R will play better on some of the older DVD players. Even though booktyping to DVD-ROM is supposed to be the universal fix for playback problems, some players like the -R format better.

TRIPP1N, as long as you are using Taiyo Yuden my opinion is you don't need to speed the extra money on the DVD plus R format the DVD dash R should work just fine and there less expensive online

just throwing my 2 cents out there........... I have one of those Sony expensive DVD players (about $150.00). It plays everything flawlessly from newer media to cd-mp3s, DVD-mp3s, vcds, and much much more. the trick is to make sure that when you are buying your player to read the box and see what it's compatible with! I use DVD+R, 8x Taiyo Yudens only ... the silver printables and the white hub printables and booktype my BenQ drives to DVD-ROMs. I have never gotten any complaints from anyone about playing my burned DVDs. Even my son's Xbox (which is picky) will play my DVDs. And here are the rules I go by:
1. burning speeds: burn at 4x so there will be less writing errors (rule of thumb is to burn at half the rated speed of the disk--8X disk burn at 4x).
2. read manual for your stand alone player and use the disks that will play in your player. If your player is less than 2 yrs old then it should play the + or - R disks! I said SHOULD that's why you read the manual.
3. try booktyping your drive to DVd-ROM so it will make your +R disks more compatible to players. Read this:
http://k-probe.com/bitsetting-booktype-faq.php
4. make sure that there are no finger prints or scratches on your disk that make it hard for the player to read the disk!
5. use good quality media (rule of thumb....buy the ones that are Made in Japan.) Verbatim is a top notch disk and is the only exception to this rule....some Verbatims are made in Taiwan and they are top notch!
6. and don't burn too close to the outer edge of the disk ..... which will make the disk unreadable! but using good media you will be able to burn close to the edge better than lesser quality media. Just in case I only burn no closer than 4400MB, so if you can set your programs to that, all the better!
follow these little tips of the trade and you'll have better success! good luck.
also read this:
http://www.cdfreaks.com/reviews/Why-DVDRW-is-superior-to-DVD-RW/
why the +R media is better than the -R media
this is what I learned here at AfterDawn from many members that are not here anymore. It works for me and I don't deviate from it and I have too many successful burns that I have stopped counting now. It's simple and easy and I even found out that if you are having trouble ripping a scratched DVD use Brasso brass cleaner and a micro fiber cloth to clean the DVD! sounds funny but I have restored very bad DVDs that my son has destroyed (originals) and brought them back to life. I was able to rip the DVD without any problems. The trick is the micro fiber cloth... and rub vigorously back and forth, from the outer edge to the inner circle in a straight line! It took out all the scratches and made it like new! just a few tips.

Don't use the 16X TYs. They are problematic. TY was very late to the 16X game. Always stick with the TYG02's 8X. I also avoid the 'Value Line', they are not the same as the Premiums.
Quote: 5. Keep your pc defragged and the registry cleaned.
Oh yea, that will make a big difference... when pigs fly.
I use the TYG02s and have no problems/complaints from anyone. I never defrag (the drive's too full anyway) and would never touch a reg cleaner. But I do like a Japanese drive to go with my MIJ discs.
Here's a TYG02(8X) burned at 12X on my Pioneer 115D (scanned in my BenQ).

I use TYGO3s all the time , NO problems at all. pretty soon thats all you're going to be able to get as the 8x speed will be phased out .and i use the Value Line with little to no problems also
