Hi all, i know this question has probably been asked a million and one times but please help. The problem is that i can not see why my system takes this long to load now. I used to have it down to around a minute and i know that all my files slow it down, but now it takes over 2 minutes. I can not see what is slowing my laptop down, please help, because i just know it should be faster. I would just wipe the hard drive and start over but it has no cd drive and all the guide to booting from a usb drive seem to still have glitches. Thanks

I'm new here, so I may not be of much help, but I guess I'll give it a try anyways :D

So... there are many many many reasons to why a system may boot slowly. However, nothing in your hijack this log suggests a slow startup, but there are other reasons as well. It could be because of too many programs running on startup, so you could open msconfig in cmd or download autoruns (a great tool, by the way) to see what loads at startup. It could also be due to your files being fragmented, your registry cluttered, your hard drive full, malware, or the worst of all, hardware failure. It really is a hard problem to solve.

However, perhaps downloading a tool called Bootvis could help diagnose your problem. Try it, and see how it goes. :D

See this is what has stumped me, i do not have many programs, more or less all are shown in the hijackthis report. I defragment the hard drive every so often so it is not that, i run scans weekly (spybot and avg) so it can't be a virus.

I was about to install bootvis, when i came across a wikipedia page, that says BootVis defines boot and resume times as the time from when the power switch is pressed to the time at which the user is able to start a program from a desktop shortcut. The application measures time taken during Windows XP's boot or resume period. BootVis can also defragment the files accessed during boot to improve startup performance (however a similar optimization is already done in the background by Windows XP every three days).
Does that mean it is basically usless to me as i know it takes 2 minutes and xp already sorts my files out. So what next???

I would check your ide/sata controllers. Make sure that they are not set to PIO, they need to be UDMA. That will be a major slowdown.

Anything else, please help.
i would do a reboot of hard drive but no cd drive and could only do it through usb, but that seems really slow and still quite a few glitches.

Hi h1ten.

I still suggest trying Bootvis, as it also diagnoses the problem, and does more than what ordinary Windows does to improve boot time.

There's always the possibility that this is a hardware problem, so perhaps you can get a benchmarking software like Fresh Diagnose, and diagnose your hardware.

PS: Do you run registry cleaners? Perhaps you can try. Do proceed safely, and run only safe ones such as Advanced WindowsCare Personal or Regscrub.
