How to tell if iPod Touch 8GB has software upgrades?

Is there any way to tell if an iPod Touch has the software upgrades from the box? The only way I know is that if the model number on the box has a /B rather than a /A but I'm not sure if that is correct.

itunes will do it for you i believe, not to worry apple products keep themselves in synce like this :)
