I've noticed that this is quite a common problem that should be addressed considering apple doesn't offer any sort of help unless you pay £40 for a help package, what a con. Anyhow, I just recently bought a laptop with windows vista on and found that vista didn't recognise my ipod on real player or WMP. It says its plugged in, but when you go to select it from the drop down menu in the transfer section, it doesn't exist. So in my foolishness I decided to download itunes, my first big mistake. I've used itunes before I had so many problems with it decided to just stick with realplayer because of its plain simplicity. So after installing itunes I plugged my ipod in and of course made sure I clicked the 'Don't ' automatically sycronise' before I did so. The first thing itunes told me was that there was a software update available for the ipod which was apparently 'essential' for the programme. So I clicked OK. The software updated the ipod and I decided to call it a day and unplugged my ipod. To my horror there was absolutely nothing on my ipod anymore. The photo's were still there, but music and video's, gone.
I checked a couple of forums and noticed this has happened before, but people didn't find an answer and just restored original settings on the pod before starting again. Fortunately I still have my old PC with windows XP on it and decided to plug my ipod into that on a whim. XP recognised that there were files on the ipod and of course the XP version of real player was able to open these files and play them perfectly. Sadly the ipod still didn't show it had anything on it so I've had to save the music from the pod onto my computer using real player (another great advantage over stupid itunes) and format the pod and reinstall everything. Thankfully a happy ending. So if this happens to you, try to find a PC with windows XP and use real player. If only MS and apple cared! So does anyone know how I might be able to use my ipod with vista?

"I've got a sandwich in my head!"
