Turn off your PS3 and when it's on stand by mode (red light), hold the power button for 5 seconds and it will reset the PS3 to your native resolution. If this doesn't work get back to me and we will do it manually. :)

Native resolution is the highest resolution your HDTV can display so you're already in your native resolution. You probably need to adjust your TV's settings. That's why the picture looks bad. Oh, and make sure you're using HDMI.

I'm going to have to say I think that is incorrect @ NarutoUzu. When your PS3 is turned off, and you hold down the power button for roughly 5 seconds, it does not automatically change the video settings for the PS3 to the "highest resolution your HDTV can display". In fact, when you do that, it does the opposite. All video settings are reset to the lowest setting possible, aka standard def. This is done for the case if you were moving your ps3 from one tv to another, but the tv settings are different and no picture will display, all you need to do is hold down the power button when turning it on to reset the display settings.

With this in mind, what Naru told blazen is incorrect. Now I don't have my PS3 in front of me, so I don't remember the exact menu titles, but I'll give you a shot at helping out.

Somewhere under the settings gives you an option on how you want the video to be output (via cables such as HDMI, component, etc). Obviously since you have HDMI, make sure you have HDMI selected as the medium to output the video. Second, there are more options to specify how you want the video output to be displayed as, (1080i, 1080p, etc.). Make sure you have the highest resolution possible selected that your tv can display. Based on your previous post, I would assume it is 1080p, so make sure that is selected.

Based off of myself doing this, my ps3 looks significantly better and is obviously outputting in HD (1080p) compared to when I first started and reset the settings using the method Naru mentioned. This should get to the best visual output, then it is up to you to adjust black levels, all that good stuff.

The only other thing worth mentioning is sometimes blu rays are 1080p but sometimes don't look it. I have a couple of movies that were "ported" (for lack of a better word) to blu ray, but weren't really remastered to look HD. So it looks maybe like a slight upgrade from DVD, but not like some blu ray movies. Also, other movies, their film styles might not want them to appear largely HD. 300 For example. The picture is obviously in hd on blu ray, but there are times when they want this "grainy" style to shine through.

Anyways, hope this helped.

When switching on and holding the power it does reset to the lowest def but will automatically see that you are using an hdmi cable and will detect the highest res that the tv can display and will change to this if you agree. so it would work.

More than likely it is the disc as the previous poster said.

By pressing the ok button on my remote(LG) it comes up with what res the tv is displaying in at that moment. If i was watching bd casino royale it would say 1080p 60hz but if i took it out and put in a ps3 game it would come up 720p 60hz. I do have to force cod4 to run in 1080 but thats another story

To answer thsi simply, your settings are way off.
I remember my ps3 took 2 hours to correct when I first bought it, my friend took like 4 hours till I helped him. Depending on your connection u set that up in settings, same for audio. Usually u can automatically set the ps3 but the audio will aways be off which u need to manually set
