I've built a HTPC (6TB of storage, thank you sale @ Microcenter) and have started ripping the DVDs to the hard disk, generally using DVD Shrink. Why? 2 kids and dozens of scratched disks, that's why :)
Anyway, we want to put some of them on the iPod Touch. I'm looking to see what I should use (preferably free) to convert the files from the hard drive on the HTPC for use on the Touch.
There are a ton of apps that convert for for iPod and even a few free ones out there.
Nero Recode and CloneDVD Mobile are 2 other paid programs.
Videora and Super are 2 free ones.
Thanks - I'll check those links. I've successfully tried the Nero route which worked well, just not sure if it will work from a folder or only from the original DVD.
Because I'm specifically ripping with DVD to the hard drive, and I want to go from that hard drive subfolder to the Touch, I want to make sure that whatever I do is compatible with the format left behind by Shrink.
Recode will do either - the video_ts of the movie on your hard drive or straight from the disc.
Instead of picking the drive when clicking import dvd pick the folder where the movie is.
The guy who developed Shrink btw works for Nero - Recode specifically so they are very familiar. Recode is just faster with quite a few more options like converting to digital formats.
edit - just to clarify - to do straight from the disc w/ Recode on a copy protected disc you'll need to run something like AnyDVD is the background.
