iPod to PC: try iDump http://www.download.com/iDump/3000-2169_4-10407429.html
I have no personal experience with it, but I've been told it's good.

Not sure about you .dll problem, though. Sorry!

I am very Jaded but I suspect 80% of the itune upgrades deal with enhancing the policing routines/security not in enhancing of the user interface. I suspect your last iTunes upgrade took care of Sharepod.

The safest way to copy from an ipod is just to use file explorer to copy the folder from the iPod to the PC then add the folder using iTunes. This method does not alter the iPod in any way. You need to change the explorer settings under tools/folder options to see hidden folders. The music and other data is in a hidden folder called ipod_control. The file names of the tunes are scrambled but the tag info will be intact. This is not a sync so it will copy everything.

Apple does not like other apps in its business and has been known to attack iPods and/or remove music from your computer. I haven't used iTunes on the PC in years so I do not have first hand experiences. I only hear horror stories. Therefore I may have an exaggerated wariness.

your best bet is to use copytrans. it works with all ipods and it's the only one that imports your playlists, ratings, date last played and artworks. Its fabulous!
