hi there, i am in need of a new power supply with alot of juice!

i have a corsair TX750 but every so oft it will cut out. think thats because of my graphics card demanding more. use to do that to before but i changed my system last month.

my comp is

antec 900 case fans on high
gigabyte EX58 extreme
intel i7 920 D0 stepping that came out in march
3gb of corsair ram DDR3 1333
Nvidia XFX GTX 280
Watercooled with XSPC and dual res with 750 pump

its not running/overclocked at the moment but i have had it up to 4.2Ghz ram clocked to 1600mhz and gtx 280 overclocked so i would like it like that constantly.

2 power supplies i have been looking at from scan.co.uk

obviously upgrade from tx750 to corsair hx1000 (1000WATT) £189.72

or

XIGMATECK NRP-HC1501 (1500WATT) £171.35

i know its all to do with amps too and i would like to get and run GTX 280 Triple SLI at some point too.

any ideas?

Gigabyte EX58 EXTREME > Intel i7 920 D0 2.66Ghz (OC 4.2ghz 50C Load) > Corsair Ram 3gb 1333 @ 667MHz(OC 1600 @ 800MHz 9,10,10,25) > All watercooled with XSPC + Dual res with pump > XFX GTX 280 > Corsair HX1000 > Antec 900 (all fans on full speed)

Im not 100% but your corsair 750W should Defenately have enough juice for a gtx280. Im almost certain a Corsair 550W could handle that (if not a 650W for sure). So I doubt the problem is that wattage or anything else. Maybe your specific PSU is faulty... Is anything overclocked on your system now?

no not at all. i dont see why using a corsair 650 or lower will make it better since its lower wattage and lower amps than the one am using now. nothings faulty cause it all new and the power supply is not that old at all.

its all running fine now has been for awhile but am stil not 100% sure its stable. computer has been on for 3days solid and it hasnt cut out on me yet.

just want to know whats the best power supply to get

I was just saying the power supply could possibly have a small problem (rare with corsair) but if its been on 3 days Im sure its stable. Does it cut off during gaming or just randomly? cause a Corsair 750W dosent need to be upgraded at all.

this is what i couldnt understand. it would load up the comp and then when playing sims 3 it would cut off. first of all it cut off my gtx 280 which puts the screen on standby and then a few times after, it started turning off my comp.

so i unplugged a my wireless xbox controller usb left the mouse in, un plugged the fans on the antec then started it up. it went again. so i plugged everything back in and it seems fairly stable for past 4 days.

its strange. my mobo has the lastest gigabyte bios and everything.

but i do want to overclock it and keep it that way and also get a few more gtx 280's to triple sli it eventually. so that will use a big chunk of watts and amps.

so am guessing its the supply again and was wanting to know whats the best power supply to buy thats stable has alot of watts and amps for my spec and room for upgrades.

Well from what your telling me, It probably is your power supply particularly but not the corsair 750W in general. but, if you plan to triple sli a gtx280 then the 1000W corsair is the way to go..
I thought maybe you were playing something like crysis cause that game can cause an overload but the sims 3 dosent really need anything to run. I max that game out with my overclocked 4830 =D

I would take Enermax 950W Revolution instead of Corsairs 1000W. Enermax delivers much more amps.

A few notes:
Enermax PSUs are pathetic compared to Corsair. The 1KW Galaxy fails most tests at 700-800W genuine load.
A 750W is AMPLE for an i7 and a single GTX280.
For SLI with i7 I'd recommend either a 1KW Corsair HX or Zalman ZM1000-HP, the HX1000 is the same unit as most 1500W units (they didn't change anything, it's just a 1KW PSU with a 1500W label stamped on it)
It's either a fault, or you've got a connection problem with your components. I would blame Watercooling off the bat, as it can cause many problems like this, fitting with waterblocks, pumps overloading, small leaks etc.
I wouldn't rule out a fault with the motherboard. A weak PSU will turn a PC off, not cause a 'no signal' error first. That is a trademark of a faulty PSU or faulty component in the system.

thanks for your answers. i find it hard to think what it is. my system is very new. i got my i7 n mobo end of april and my gtx in january. i bought the new res/pump last week. so its pratically all new. hard drive is only a few months old. my corsair tx750 is second hand but almost new.

i read the reviews on that 1500watt psu and its sh!t apparently. it says 1500watts but it only produces around 1200watts and its very noisy and heats up alot.

what do you think of enermax ERV1250EGT 1250 W? it says you can get a total of 104amps, or are these power supplys shite too lol

i kind of know what am after/lookin for since am at uni doing a degree in electrical and electronic enginnering.

yea i was playing sims 3, well my lass was. pathetic game lol i have been running GTA 4 on high no probs no lags, stalker cs on ultra, fallout 3 and all that no prob.

i know the HX1000 gets alot of credit but is it really that good? am just after a decent power supply that will last and be good enought for future upgrades like tri sli and being able to have even more stable comp and overclock - just tried of fawking out money and then things not working, all though i do enjoy spending money lmao

Hammett: Exactly right, the 1500W PSUs are a complete con. I run a heavily overclocked Quad core (2.8->4Ghz) and TWO 4870X2s (four GPUs, equivalent in power to triple SLI) perfectly off a Zalman 850W PSU with no issues. The COrsair HX1000 also did the job but was VERY loud. The Zalman is amazingly quiet.
I'm still not confident about Enermax PSUs, as one failed when powering triple SLI with a Skulltrail system (1000W draw), where the Corsair HX 1KW not only passed, but still runs the system 6 months down the line.

Good luck with the degree, I tried EEE and failed, because I couldn't keep up with the maths of it...

yea i know what you mean. its very intensive. just done my first year exams.

am guessing and its looking like the corsair HX1000. i have noticed that pc power and cooling PSU 1200watts or something. it seems very impressive yet wares a hole in your wallet.

i have also noticed many times about the number of 12v lines, corsair uses 1 or 2 yet others are using up to 6...why? whats the point?

Not only will the PCP&C burn a hole in your wallet, it'll burn a hole in your eardrums as well. The HX1000 is loud, but PCP&C units are deafening.
The number of 12V lines was meant to ensure a lack of fluctuations for one component due to another drawing lots, but realistically, if a PSU is well made, it shouldn't happen anyway.

lol sounds fun. it cant be any louder than what my comp is like now. all fans on antec on full so thats 4 fans and the ocz ram cooler going, a small red LED fan going the fan on the corsair psu going and the gtx 280 fan at 100% lol

think i will order the hx1000 soon either this week or next. where the cheapest place to get it from in the uk? am using scan.co.uk at the moment.

Actually yes it can. The fans in an Antec 900 are about 40dB combined with them all on high, and the max of a GTX280 is about 45-50dB. The Corsair TX PSU will max out at 55dB. PCP&C units regularly run at 60dB, higher than normal conversation.

Scan and Ebuyer are my preferred outlets.

haha sounds good. as long as it does the job thats fine. i use to use dabs cause it was always cheaper than scan but over the past year scan seem to be doing well with prices and i have ordered from there many times. always impressed with them,

i ordered my i7 system day before my birthday last month and it came on my bday next day. was chuffed. i always get something happening like they've messed up my order.

never order from awd-it. i ordered from there few year back and it took them a month to sort my order out cause they f**ked up. then i tried ordering from them again 2 weeks ago and they did it again. its a joke that shop.

do you know where i can get another gtx 280 thats cheap? i got mine from scan on off at 250 quid and all the other places were asking 350. + i got farcry 2 for free which wernt bad

The Thermaltake Toughpower 1500W is identical to the Corsair HX 1000W in every respect, except that the Corsair is better designed and has better support, and in many places costs less.
The GTX280 is expensive because it was discontinued ages ago, its replacement is the GTX275. As far as I know it can't be SLI'ed with a 280, you will need to find another 280 off ebay, buy a GTX295 instead, or sell your 280 and buy two 275s.

cheers for all the info, really helps, specially when theres load of people that f**k around.

Actually, it's been a whole year since the GTX280 came out, it's getting on a bit, especially for nvidia, who bring out new cards crazily often.

They still are. The GTX295 came down about £30 a month ago because the HD4870X2 went down, trouble is, that went down by £50, and was a lot cheaper to start with. If the GTX295 had the same bandwidth characteristics as two GTX280s it'd be worth that price, easily. Since it's two GTX260s though, it's absurd.

Anything would be quieter than the HX1000, except the Enermax Galaxy haha... Reading the Galaxy's acoustic performance, it's worse than the HX1000, substantially. The Revolution should do the job, but given that the 1KW Galaxy failed a 900W load test, are the Revolutions really to be trusted on such a precedent?
