I have an NTSC-U Wii v3.1 that I updated online. I think I semi-bricked my Wii with a PAL version of FIFA '08. Can still play original games, but backup discs stop spinning and I get unable to read disc all the time. First noticed the problems when I was playing Madden '08 backup and in the middle of the game I got the black error message that said to restart. since then nothing boots.
I tried the 1.9b recovery disc and the test failed, so I assume it didn't flash anything. I was operating 1.9b previously. Since then nothing will spin up at all. I can definitely get into system settings so I am not sure if this is even semi-bricked or something else completely going on. I haven't moved the system around at all so I doubt any wires came loose inside (though I haven't checked). Any thoughts? Thanks in advance?

I have been a silly girl and ran the super mario galaxy ntsc update on my Pal wii console. It is now semi bricked(no settings)
If I put the super mario Pal game in my wii, will this still ask me to update, if so, would this fix the settings problem ? If not,do you think there will be a future game out with an update on it ?
Hope I make sense & thanks for any help.

I think you are out of luck since SMG has the latest firmware available on a game now. Paper Mario won't help you since it's got an older firmware.
Now, you'll have to wait for the next firmware from Nintendo and a game that carries it to unbrick you Wii...

Sorry,I didn't mean paper mario,I meant Super Mario Galaxy Pal.
I tried it anyway and it said I had to update.I done the update and everything is now back to normal(I have my settings again)
So if anyone has made the mistake I did, just run the update on the Pal version and your wii will no longer be semi bricked.
Thanks for your reply.

After a long wait, my semi-bricked jap wii is fixed with the Super Mario Galaxy Jap game. Only slight problem of the duplicated channels remains. I can live with that. Yeah!

Here's the history of the problem.
Jap Wii with V2.0J.
Semi-Bricked by Super charged Mario strikers (PAL)
Waited for Big Brain Academy (JAP) version but missed this one.
Instead Pokemon Battle revolution (US) ran it's update.
Wii remained semi bricked prob with v2.2U
Tried Donkey Kong Barrel Blast (JAP). No help.
Since then had put in various games including
BOOGIE (US)
MARIO PARTY (US)
RATATOUILLE (US)
POWER PRO (JAP)
METROID PRIME (US)
TABLE TENNIS (US)
BALLS OF FURY (US)
POWER PRO (US)
Wii remained semi bricked.
Inserted SUPER MARIO GALAXY (JAP)
Semibricked fixed. Duplicate channels appear.
Version 3.0J

Try this. Remove any disc. Unplug the unit and reboot from cold again after the update. Works for my Jap Wii. Ironically, after the update, SMG(J) will not play.

I would like to thank hotlips25 for your post.
I can also confirm that i had semi bricked my pal version wii (with wiikey) using Super mario galaxy ntsc version( yes..stupid i know ).
I went out today and bought an original PAL copy of SMG and it updated my console again, recovering my wii settings. what a lifesaver.
I could have waited for a firmware update from nintendo but it was really bothering me.
I am guessing that because the PAL users are the last to get the Games releases, the firmware version was slightly later than the NTSC version therefore asked to do an update...
Used the Wiikey patch 1.9g.... all is working ok, inc backup of PAL and NTSC version of SMG :-)

The PAL Wii with the double channels caused by NTSC Big Brain Academy I have updated online up to 3.1E. While the double channels didn't go away, the system is intact and working perfectly.

I think there have been posts to indicate that the PAL version of SMG can fix PAL Wiis which were semi-bricked by the NTSC-U SMG. No idea how come, just thank your lucky 120 stars that it does. =)

bixero,
You prob have to wait for another Jap game upgrade. meanwhile DON'T put in the latest out of region game unless you know for sure it doesn't do an upgrade. (Check the compatibility list online)
I had to hold back on GH3 even though my semi-bricked jap wii was fixed with SMG(J). Once you have your settings back. Get your Wii online asap and download the latest upgrade. I got 3.1J.
PAL users were lucky that SMG(E) still fixed their Wii though it got semi bricked by SMG(U).
BE CAREFUL GUYS. IT CAN'T BE STRESSED ENUFF.
1)KEEP THE WII UPDATED (ONLINE) IF POSSIBLE
2)GET LATEST GAME WITH YOUR REGION UPDATE.
FAILURE TO DO SO, CHECK THE COMPATIBILITY LIST ONLINE, USE WBB OR SIMILAR OR POP IN THE OUT OF REGION DISC AT YOUR OWN RISK.

Hi guys... does anyone know ? when you download the latest firmware online how does it download the correct region firmware... ie if you have a NTSC console and download firmware when in a PAL Country does it still install the correct Version?
Also it seems certain region firmwares can overwrite others but not visa-versa....
So here is a senrio:
.... You have a USA Wii here in UK you download NTSC firmware 3.1 online, happy days you think!... Aunty Vera buys the kids original SMG(pal) for christmas, kids put it in while you are fast asleep after watching the queens speech. Overwrites with PAL version 3.1, Hey presto Semi bricked Wii.. kids are screaming for the rest of the holidays, wife blames you for being so tight in the first place and kicks you out of the house.. Could happen!!

The NTSC version of SMG is not region coamptible with PAL Wii systems. So you will need to find the PAL version of SMG.

Don't know I this can help, but here's how I de-brick my half-bricked Pal Wii.
My Pal Wii is half-bricked since I've tried to play NTSC Big brain academy. Few days ago I used Pal Metroid Prime 3 to upgrade to the 3.0E firmware, but I didn't solved the problem.
Yesterday I tried with Pal Super Mario Galaxy, and It's 3.1E upgrade, and now my Wii is FULLY working!!

Surely if you are already running 3.1e and you load SMG.. if it doesnt ask to do a firmware update then you are ok to continue.
I have not found any game as yet that has tried to overwrite 3.1e(pal) but 3.1e does overwrite ntsc version.
