Hi All,

Im new and i just love the abundance of help and advice out here.

Not too long ago, I was gifted a wii console and a few games, including super mario galaxy and others(Not Original).

Now my problem was, I had no idea which region was the console from and god knows which region are the games from.

I did alot of reading out here and I figured I have a wii console with chip GC2-D2B(after entering serial, some site told me), firmware is 2.2U so my wii is a USA region. It is modded but no idea about which verson wiikey though.

Now I want to play super mario galaxy but all you smart boys out there have fore-warned me not to update with another region... so how do I know which region are the Game DVD's from???

I tried reading on the super mario galaxy disc cover and it wont say which region the disc it is :(

Is there any way to identify which region the Game DVD is from? Thanks a bunch in advance.

I NEED HELP!! I have a Wiikey... all the wii firmware updates and wiikey is updated. it plays all games I use AONE DVD-R. But I am not sure if the wii has a problem before or after I updated. But I notice faint lines on my flat screen. I tried my sons CRT TV and i tried his grandparents tv(projection tv). they all display faint vertical red lines..dots if u will..... i thought it was my backups but i tried wii sports and i see them..... i am thinkin of taking out the wiikey and sending it to Nintendo to be fixed...or something but i am not sure what to do about this..could the laser be dirty?? or something?

If I have latest 3.1J firmware in my Wii-J, and I play Metroid 3 ntsc/u and it asks to update, I can safely say 'yes' and it will skip actual update because I have latest firmware?

Or, will it update anyway and I will end up with bricked wii?

Some games will not play if first patched with Brick Blocker (such as Wii Degree and Metroid Prime 3)

Thanks for the help everyone!
Has anybody with the same setup tried and confirmed that the Wii will not brick?

If it helps, I have played Metroid (ntsc-u) in my Wii (Jap) 3.1J with wiikey (1.9g). No problems except that I have dup channels. BTW I played Metroid when my Wii was at 2.2(U) semibricked by Mario strikers. Then SMG(J) unbricked it and brought it to 3.0J and thereafter to 3.1J online and wiikey to 1.9g

Does anyone know of any issues when running an NTSC (American) copy of Fire Emblem: Radiant Dawn in a PAL Wii (modded, 3.1E firmware, or whatever is the latest). I've scanned the whole topic, couldn't seem to find anything specific.

Hi All,
I just about managed to read all the pages.
Thanks a lot for the guide, it has been a real help.
However i just need to make sure ive understood something.

I have a uk pal wii with a wii key installed with the latest firmware. I use wifi to update the wii and have it updated to the lastest available online and i also own a genuine mario galaxy which ive played.

Does using Brick Blocker 1.3 on US ntsc games always remove any updates and therefore prevent bricking?
Ive read that some games, do not work even once patched. What i dont know if this results in bricking, or if the game is just not recognised or something.

Also, if i am prompted for an update from a non pal game, is it possible to prevent bricking by not accepting the update?
I have read that some games contain updated which are game specific and do not cause bricking. Does anyone have any more information about that?

Thanks a lot! I know pal games are the safest way to go but the newsgroups seem full with ntsc games and non english pal games.

Wiibrickblocker is not 100% safe and, as you said
it stops some games from running.

Check the PAL section of this compatibility list. I think it could help you decide which games to run from other regions.

As for the other question, a few games just go ahead with the update without asking for permission.

Thanks for the quick response.
I will check the list out. Thanks for that!
What i wanted to know was, if a game that doesnt work after being patch with brick blocker, just doent work, or bricks the console in the process.
Although I will stick to the compatibilty list, it would be handy to know the risk invloved in using a brick blocker patched game.

Also would like clarification on one more thing.
as i have the latest firmware 3.1 e i belive, is it true there is no danger from any ntsc game that is below this firmware? ie older games

Thanks a lot for your help

If the doesn't work, then that's it. It will not run anything.

In theory, older firmwares should not modify newer ones. However, as always, use your own judgement.

In case of NTSC(U) console, if I install D2C key and keep JP1 and JP2 open (No region override) will it permanently prevent console from being bricked by allowing to play only "U" backups?

Is there a way to identify region by the disk image?

Thanks so much for the information larrylje. I've been looking all over for a more detailed explanation to the process of how region settings can brick your wii, and how to play images from another region without allowing them to run an update.

Thanks again!

I have a PAL (UK) wii console with an installed D2CKEY chip- updated via internet with the latest update.
I have been sticking to the compatibility list and only downloading the games that work (so as to avoid creating drinks coasters).
I always verify the games with brick blocker, however all the NTSC games i have downloaded i have never brickblocked because i found some of them made the games unplayable.
As a result all the PAL games i have left intact and when asked for an update i have allowed them to do so. And all the NTSC games i have only used (Wiiregionfrii) to convert from NTSC to PAL.
To date all my games have worked flawlessly.

To those of you who have found that your backups do not work, try changing the TV settings on the Wii from 50hz to 60hz (visa versa)- most of the time this fixes the problem.

Hi all, i think i got a new problem here
My WII is NTSC, from USA, all that i know is the hardware version is D2C and the chip is some kind of "proasic3"
Well, the fact is that i downloaded Mario Galaxy PAL, patched it to NTSC/US with "RegionFrii_v1.21_WII-SYNDiCATE".
Then I let it update my firmware, thats when i got a semi-brick block (on wi settings).
After this I did the same with Metroid Prime 3 (patched it to NTSC/US) and it done another update on my console.

Finally I read that BigBrain Academy (NTSC/US) could fix the problem, so I downloaded it and played the game without see any update messages...

If u can help me, I will be very pleased, cause I do not saw no one with the same problem.
Thanx!

oh, and.. do anyone know a link with the games and their firmware updates?

I have a Japanese Wii and I use it to play NTSC-U games. I always use Wii Brick Blocker before burning the game to disc. So why does the Wii also need the latest firmware? Is using Wii Brick Blocker alone adequate protection?

(talesgalu)

As long as you stick to the compatibility list for your Wii Region Console to know which games will work and never let any Wii games from NTSC(Jap) and PAL update your system- you will be fine.
When NTSC games tried to update my PAL Wii i quickley turned off the system, and updated it on the internet.
With regards to unblocking your NTSC (Wii system) you will just have to keep trying any new release NTSC (USA) game until it works, or if possible go online and update your firmware...good luck.

To my knowledge there are only two ways tp update your wii system:
1/ Using a game disk and the updates on the disk
2/ Or plugging your wii system into the internet and updating it manually.

Just to be sure about one thing.... With my WiiKey I can play any region game so long as I have updated to the latest firmware BEFORE playing the game and not allowing the game to perform the update....is this correct?

With the WiiKey I should also use Wii Brick Blocker to patch the ISO?

OK, So I've searched through this forum & Googled, but can't find my answer.

I've got a PAL Wii with D2CKey chip. I've got a backup NTSC version of Boogie. Is it safe or not for me to run the update on the disc? I'm scared I may brick my Wii if I run the update.

Thanks,
John
