NO, do not run the update, you will semi brick your wii.
Only run updates on Pal games(original or backups)

Are you sure about that?
Apparently it may be only the usb microphone support. But I'm still very hesitant to try the update.

board does not connect with remote, it's the nunchuk, but only one mini-game requires nunchuk which is punching bag rhythm. noted that wii fit uses a modified wii sports engine.

Quick question folks.
Totally new to all things wii. Live in Taiwan and buying a US version wii this weekend. If I go online and get any updates will they be the updates for the region I am residing in or updates for the machine and game that I am usuing. For example will my Wii NTSC US with it's US game download a US version update even though I am living in another region?
I decided to buy a wii a couple of weeks ago and decided to check out the best version for me to buy (local version is the Japanese version) and I never imagined how many things there would be that I would have to look out for! The last thing I want to do is buy one an d have it bricked or semi bricked immediately.
I have already decided to buy the US version as I really want English menus.
Any help???

hey everyone, i had to sign up to this because of all the great advice some of you give. i have someproblems with my wii that started after trying to play the jap ver of super smash bros brawl (backup). i updated the system to the 3.1u and also updated my boot disk and wii key by doing this:
here's what we did:
1. downloaded wiikey setup v1.3 and unziped it
2. run fixsize on the command prompt to correct the size of bootdisc.us.iso file using this format: fixsize bootdisc.us.iso ..fixsize and bootdisc.us.iso are included in the wiikey setup v1.3 zip file
3. downloaded make-multiv3 and unziped it
4. copied bootdisc.us.iso file and pasted it on the same folder as the unziped make-multiv3
5. run make-multiv3 on the command prompt using this format: make-multiv3.exe output.iso USA bootdisc.us.iso. this will create output.iso file
6. burned output.iso to verbatim dvd-r using nero at speed 4x
7. burned bootdisc.us.iso to verbatim dvd-r using nero at speed 4x
8. booted wii with the output.iso disk
after all this i set up my wii key to region override ON, and speed to 3X and saved the settings. but these settings didnt save, smash bros didnt play and i got error 001. i checked the settings and they were back to normal!! they dont seem to save. every other game and backup works except the jap smash bros. can anyone help me out, i would appreciate it.

so after reading all these threads about bricking I got just a simple question pertaining to my situation.
I have the d2c chip in my wii and just got metroid prime (im in the us and all my games are R1) and it brings up that auto update with the warning it could harm any modifications made. Is it ok for me to update since I am not and wont be running any pal or foreign games? I only back up US region games and use those backups.
If updating the firmware like it asks will brick my wii I assume just use the brickblocker program?

I am tired of people replying with questions that are clearly answered in the guide.
What is the point of creating a guide if people don't read it?
It clearly says...
Quote: NTSC(U) Game + NTSC(U) Wii = No chance of a region brick

One more time folks:
1 - If your wii is PAL, only run an update from a game that is also PAL(original or copies)
2 - If your wii is NTSC, only run an update from a game that is also NTSC(original or copies)
3 - If you have semi-bricked your wii(no settings)you will have to look for a game that has a newer update from the one that you semi-bricked your wii with.

yes, you will brick your wii....
I had the 3.1U on my NTSC wii and it still updated it to 3.1J and now it's half bricked :(.
Anyone know when 3.2U might be coming out?

was having a similar query as sakoon when i saw this reply earlier in this thread...

When inserting a new game disc with an update it will prompt for an update no matter if your Wii is up to date or not. As long as you have the most current update the update will search and notice you have the latest update. It then will skip the update all together.
You would think it should check to see what update it has then if it needs to be updated the prompt will appear. But this is not what happens. The update prompt appears and you need to except the prompt so it can search and find what firmware you are running on your Wii.
If your Wii is current with the latest update it will skip the update. If the Wii is not current then it will flash the Wii with the new update on the disc.
just to confirm, this means the prompt for you to update will pop up regardless of whether there is a need to update, so are all the games listed by sakoon safe to play on a 3.1J or will any of the games actually update the wii?

considering the new update 3.2
from what i have read, it actually asks you whether you want to update from a game that is inserted and you can choose not to, is this correct?
in this case we dont need brickblocker and the wii wont get semi-bricked

Yes, I believe you are correct. I just burned Major League Baseball 2k8 this morning, and it actually asked, "Are you sure you want to run this update? If you have any unauthorized modifications, this could cause your system to stop working. Hold power for 4 seconds if you want to skip this update".
I didn't run the update, but I assume this is the 3.2? I'm not sure how to check the version. This shouldn't (NTSC game in NTSC wii with 1.9g wiikey firmware) harm my wii, correct? Or are they just covering their @sses a little with a warning?
Thanks!

Oh, and you can't play the game without doing the update, by the way. It asks every time regardless if you "hold power to skip"

MLB 2k8 might, how do I check? I was on my way out the door when I tried it this morning, so I didn't have a chance to look very closely.

I am in a very similar position. I have a japanese wii and have just updated my firmare using wii fit. But i am still not 100% sure what this means i can now do? will playing the above games brick my wii or does it now mean i have the latest firmware (from the wii fit update) and it will be safe to play these games? also is there anywhere a list of games known to brick the wii so i can avoid them.
as far as i can see having the latest Japanese firmware means i cant brick my wii by playing games with older firmware updates but im not 100% sure. Its all a bit confusing :S

I semibricked my Wii (NTSC-U) with Donkey Kong Jet Race PAL about a month ago. No settings are available to me and duplicate channels.
I'm not sure what firmware version i am on but i have an active internet connection. Yesterday I played MLB 2K8(USA)at the advice of this board and was not prompted for an update. I was really hoping this game would undo the semibrick but it appears I will have to wait longer.
I got the message from Nintendo on February 26th about the update to 3.2 in the message board, however when I try to update through the internet it goes to the Opera Error Screen. What I need is a NTSC-U Game with the 3.2 update on the disc. Apparently MLB2K8 is not it. If it is, then i'm afraid my Wii is no longer able to initiate the updates from the discs (ie i am hosed) because as I mentioned previously, I tried it and no update was necessary.
