Major Problem with Nero & DVD Shrink

Hey, I burned a copy of Kill Bill vol. 2. Burn successful. Next, I tried Terminator 2 judgement day, and what happened was it didn't complete the burning process. it just froze, but my pc was still thinkin, but it stayed at 1% so i let it run while i went to work to see if it was just gonna take a while. turns out It didn't burn succesfully (8 hours later). So i tried another movie. (school of rock) Same shit. it just stops writing after 1%. However today i tried it again. it went to 5 percent. Same shit. i don't know what to do. I reformatted to see if that was the case....it wasn't the case. I reinstalled nero, dvd shrink, my dvd_r drive. Nothing. I'm using Windows Xp Pro. Pentium 3 450 MHZ 320 Megs of ram. PLz help me.
I was also wondering about this force atapi thing. I heard it fixes problems like this, but what is it?
Plz help.
BTW It usually freezes at the writing lead-in section.

ok i am at work right now. So it'll be another 4 hours b4 i can get the log up. Srry
it just freezes...i'll click cancel cuz it's not working...and my pc haults...i can still ctrl-alt-del but i still have to reboot.
but in 4 hours i will have the log up. Thx
(Do i need a blank dvd-r to get the log?)

If you can't find a log, then yes you will have to run it through. You could get a RW to test on :)

ok i just realized something....if it freezes my pc while burning....meaning i can't cancel..nothing...just 4ce reset...how can i get a log?
When it's burning the dvd-r drive light is constantly on along with my hard drive light.

It's hard to say what the problem may be. The log will help. It could be:
1) Conflict with another software. You have Nero, did you install InCD4? Do you have Roxio?
2) It could be aspi
3) Are you running any other programs?

B4 i reformatted i had Incd4 installed. With everything else (Nero 6 cd). I dont have roxio.
What is aspi?
May i have a link to the xp version
I Make sure i close down all programs b4 i even encode.

Well uninstall InCD4 .. this is called packet writing software. The apsi layer is what tells your drives what to do and what to do it with.

Nero actually saves a log file for you even if you don't. Open Windows explorer and find your Nero installation. Mine, for example is located at F:\ DVD Programs\Nero.
Click on the Nero folder and you should see a big list (use the list view) with everything in the folder, mainly about 50 .dll files with a few other types. You are looking for the one called NeroHistory. Click on that and you should find a burn log.
FYI, while there, take a look at the file called Nero, the one with the notepad. This is where all the stuff that Nero puts on a log file or messages that come up are stored.
I actually go in there and customise a few of the messages. Now when I get a succesful burn I get a "Good job, Frank!" or some other clever thing.

It may not be there, So rather than looking for that, why don't you try a simulated burn. This will allow you to save a "simulated" Nero file.
Just proceed as if you are going to do a regular burn, only check the "simulate" box on the burn tab. Make sure you uncheck the other boxes.
You need to have a blank disc in the burner, nothing will be written to it though.
Before you do that though, you have to get rid of InCD. Nero actually makes a free tool to do this with:

While you are there, download the Driver Cleaner tool and the Registry Checker tool as well. You do not need to install these tools in any particular location. I have a shortcut on my desktop so I can find them easily.
Not much happens if there is nothing wrong when you use these tools. The Driver Cleaner will list any conflicting drivers and the Registry Checker will tell you if it has corrected any registry errors. If there are none, it doesn't do much of anything.
Doing a simulated burn is interesting because no data is being written. During a normal burn the data is, of course, burned onto the disc and as this happens, it is also being read for errors. If a simulation is successful when a burn is not, that narrows things down a bit. A "simulated" Nero log is available after the process so that can tell a lot about what is going on as well.

Hi TruDatyo,
I do not see any drivers that would conflict, or software from the Nero InfoTool report you posted.
What version of the firmware do you have for the Toshiba recorder SD-R5272? I believe the latest version is 1031. If you do not have the latest, you should upgrade.
Did you try more than one brand of media?
Before you try any more media, I would recommend following the suggestion of FasFrank and try a write in simulation mode. This will help us isolate the issue, based on if it fails or passes. And if it does pass, please attach the Nero log file just for added information.

In my opinion you are essentialy running out of computer during the burn process. Almost like you have a power supply problem. I'm just thinking out loud though. Do that simulated burn.
Make sure you have everything turned off that you can possibly turn off. Screen saver, internet connection. Set XP for best performance. Disable your firewall and anti-virus software, run msconfig and look at what is starting and try to eliminate as much as you can.
It appears you have Norton and I remember something about a Norton Protected Recycle bin. See if you can find it and empty it. I think it just causes problems when it fills up because there is no way to empty it? Something like that.

Well I might as well do the same :) You could also try increasing your Virtual Memory. I've heard that has helped when you don't have alot of ram.
