Using DVD Shrink 3.0 Beta 5 to back up a DVD, back up stopped and I got the following message.
DVD shrink encountered an error and cannot continue. The error is: Failed to read from file. The reason is: Data error ( cyclic redundancy check ).
Can anyone tell me what is wrong?

Refernce to a file is missing and cyclic redundacy check fails. It is hard to imagine this problem in a commercial DVD unless it is badly pirated.

Thanks everyone for the help. I tried to clean it with windex but that didn't help. so I took it back and swaped it for another one and guess what. It worked fine.
Thanks again for the help.

I suspect that CRC error maybe a copy protection method of the authors. Since DVD players doesn't check it but DVD Roms computers do it, probably they find a way to avoid copy, at least of the entire movie. Some movies that I could not decrypt or even play totally on my computer, I could do it with no problem in the player. Obviously, if film play properly in the player I cannot claim at the video rental. Does anybody has the same suspect ?

To avoid double posting.

I don't believe it's a problem that indicates a dirty/scratched up copy.

I'm having the same problem w/a commercial release that I'm trying to back up. There are no scratches since this is a brand new copy. I even went back to the store and got another copy thinking it may be a deffective copy... but I get the same exact "cyclic redundancy check" error message.

Could it be that it's a new copy protection that's out there being tested.

I tried several other programs and got no where... each of those would give me a similar error and more or less woul stop/freeze at the same point.

I used:

DVD Decrypter

Smart Ripper

ISO Buster

Not only I tried several programs but I tried several different systems. Two different PCs and a laptop... all w/different DVD Roms or DVD Writers.

I was reading several other boards and it seems this issue it's being reported more and more... so it may actually be a new copy protection.

What DVD(s) is it you have this problem with?
What region is it, and where was it purchased?

A few DVD-backupers have had problems with this title.
It could be a bad batch or bad authoring (on purpose or not).
