I'm running the specs shown in my signature.
I'm very meticulous about keeping my system operating at its best.

I have starting backing up my dvd titles, some copy protected, using dvd decrypter & dvd shrink & i burn with Nero most of the time.

The dvd's I'm backing up take about 20 - 30 minutes to get onto my HD using Decrypter, depending on the size. The movies bigger than a regular disc take anything up to 1h40min to analyse and to encode using DVD Shrink 3.2.

Movies that do not need compression take an average of the same time as to rip them in DVD decrypter 3.2.

I have triple checked ALL my system & software settings, and they match other users' setting who get better times than I do.

I'm currently tranfsering at 1,400kb/s in DVD shrink, with movies that are around 8GB on the orinigal movie disc.

I would like to know of this is normal? If so, is there a way to improve on these times? If it isn't normal, what can i do to get better times, wothout sacrficing quality of the copies?

Provided you have DMA enabled and a good aspi layer installed then the only other factor that should affect you rip times should be the speed of your reader. As far as encoding times that would depend largely on your CPU type and speed. Athlons are a little slower than P4 are for transcoding video.

Also take note that DVD Shrink has several different settings that could also affect the speed of transcoding.

Finally, not all the reports that you hear by others are honest.

Over-Dose, your straight-rips with DVD Decrypter do seem a bit slow, considering your system specs.
Do you know what speed you're ripping at?
If not, could you try and find out? (it is shown in DVD Decrypter while ripping)

I have a transfer rate of up to 7,600KB/s while I'm ripping "The Italian Job" (7,07GB) onto my hard drive, with DVD Decrypter.

It fluctuates up and down, but its more around that constantly.

But when I encode, I get a time of no less than 1hour, with a transfer rate of about 1,300KB/s with DVD Shrink.

This is with bith my drives set to "Use DMA if available".

Any tips?

Well, a 7,07GB movie would require quite a high level of compression.
So my guess is your encoding speed is actually "normal".

There are many factors that come into play determining your rip speed. I have a P4 2.4ghz rig with 1gb ram a 16x dvd-rom and an 8x dvd+r drive. I rip my movies with DVD Shrink 3.2 onto a 7200 rpm 8mb cache SATA hdd and the whole process generally only takes about 30-40 mins start to finish. However the sata drive is one a differnt chain then the dvd rom. So are u ripping to a slave drive on the same chain ? If you are u may try ripping to a diff. hard drive. I only use DVD Decrypter if i have too tho, and it seems much slower then DVD Shrink. Maybe shrink is optmized for p4s ? Anyways hope this helps...
