i have a Sony DRU-710A drive, and its been working flawlessly with memorex 4x dvd+r's. I switched to memorex 8x DVD-R's. So far using dvd shrink and dvd decrypter, it has failed to verify all three dvd's ive burned, and only 2 out of 3 dvd's play (Snatch and Ronin work, U-571 does not play)

any ideas? It says I/O error for the verification process

drive is only 2 months old so the firmware is fine. It will verify 4x DVD+Rs, and 4X or 8X DVD-R's...but not 8x DVD+Rs, all memorex...any ideas?

Have you checked if there are any new? During two months threre can be several new releases.

there is no new firmware. Just checked SONY's site. Also, DVD Shrink has been encoding VERY slow lately (1920kb/s) and it used to speed through dvds like nothing. What gives?

DMA is enabled on all drives, and have defragged all HDD's

Have you tried another brand of 8X. Memorex is not a favorite around here. They use many companies to manufactur their media and some aren't real high in the quality department. Sometimes you buy a good batch and sometimes you buy a bad batch. Can you use Nero Info Tool or DVDInfoPro to ID the manufaturer of this batch?

Nero says its a CMC MAG E01 disc.

I thought memorex were of pretty good quality....What brands would you recommend?

I and many others usually recommend Ritek Ridata or Verbatim branded discs. By branded I mean that they have the brand name on the disc itself. There have been issues with imitations labels in the past. Browse the DVD Media forum for some more info.
Also have a look at this site. You'll see that CMC is in the lower class media section.
