I'm confused on how to decrypt a movie with decrypter. according to the guide you can use decrypter if the disc you are backing up is less than 4.7gb but some people use it to decrypt movies larger than 4.7gb and then use dvdshrink. How exactly is this done? How do you save it as in your hard drive and will dvdshrink burn it directly or do you need nero? thanks any help would be appreciated.

It is a pleasure to see someone who is not too lazy to do a little looking on their own.I had given up hope for pple such as you. YOU MADE MY DAY.
So since you were so good to me, here is something for you - it's a nice easy guide that will have you backing up DVD's no matter what their size :)
Check it out, it's about the middle of the page and it's totally complete -

It worked!! :) thanks for the tip scuba pete! was able to backup some old dvds i had.
Question though...on some dvds i tried to backup i get an error message saying the disc is encrypted and the operation halts. On some other forums people say they use decrypter first to decrypt the movie then use shrink to burn. Is this correct too?

jay69,
Should you find that DVD Shrink is having problems with a disc, open DVD Decrypter and rip the DVD with that. After backing up more than 800 DVD's, I haven't encountered a single instance where DVD Decrypter failed to do the job. :D)
If ripping with DVD Decrypter in the "Default" mode doesn't seem to be doing the job, go to "Tools", "Settings", "File" "Mode" then "tick" Remove PUO's" . If you're ripping in the "ISO", "Read", "Mode" "tick" "Remove PUO's" there also. IMPORTANT: While you're here, go to the "I/O" tab and in the bottom right-hand side "tick" "Ignore read errors," an excellent setting when working with a disc with a corrupt file or two then click "OK" and endeavor to rip again.
] I feel that nothing can beat ripping the DVD using the "ISO", "Read", "Mode" and then using "File", "Open disc Image " in DVD Shrink to open the ISO image then processing as usual then burn to disc with DVD Decrypter.
HINT: Don't forget to go back to DVD Decrypter after ripping to reset the "Mode" to "ISO" "Write".
Cheers,
Pete
Once again, report back on your progress, OK ? I'll be waiting -

I've done dozens of back-ups now with DVD Shrink + Nero combo without any problems - and was just curious as to what I would need DVD Decryptor for? Not trying to insult the program or anything, am just genuinely curious as to what it does that Shrink doesn't do?

You are the one who was having trouble because DVD Shrink wasn't breaking the encryption -
It has nothing to do with "insult", Shrink just doesn't do them all - I thought I was plain - read the beginning of my post -

Another good source for DVD Shrink guides and information is at DVDshrink.info. Here's the link that goes directly to the guide section. http://www.dvdshrink.info/guides.php ddlooping is the author and he worked closely with the author of DVD Shrink in the development of the program. The guides go from the simple to how to use the edit functions. Several of the guides are interactive making them easier to understand. Sometimes a picture is worth a thousand words. Hmmm... where did I here that? ;)

Scuba Pete, I was hoping you could help me as well. I'm trying unsuccessfully to back up the movie Hero (just released on 11/30. I noticed someone else posted a request regarding the same issue, but the answer he was given didn't help me. I'm using DVDShrink and have had great success, however, when I analyze Hero, I get to 45% complete and I get a "Programming Error--Cyclical Reference Error" I've also tried DVD Decrypter and had the same problem. Since I can't get the files to the hard drive, I can't complete the backup. Any suggestions?

The name isn't Pete, but maybe I can help. Try using AnyDVD along with DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink (any program for that matter). AnyDVD is a decrypter that is kept up to date more than most. It has a good trial period (download from SlySoft), so you can get a good feel as to whether you like it or not. If AnyDVD with Decrypter won't read the disc, then you have a disc problem or something is possibly wrong with your PC setup. Try the AnyDVD trial, that way you'll really know where your problem lies. Let us know what happens.
Make sure the disc surface is clean and smudge free, wipe with a soft cotton cloth, old Ts are good. Hopefully there are a minimum of scratches, these cause read problems as well.

Hi there, JK231974, welcome to our little club,
I think if you "tweak" DVD Decrypter just a little you may have better results -
Are you ready ?
Great ! I'd like you to check your DVD Decrypter's settings. First, it should be version 3.5.1.0. Go to "Tools", "Settings", set everything to "Default". Then in the "General" tab change, "Removal Method" from "Normal" to "Aggressive", in "File Mode", "tick" Remove PUO's." For ripping in the "ISO, Read Mode", "tick" "Remove PUO's" there also. in the "CSS" tab, under "CSS Cracking Method", choose "Brute Force ~> I/O Key Exchange" and "On Failure" choose "Yes". . IMPORTANT: In the "I / O" tab, in the bottom right, "tick" the box which says, "Ignore read errors". This is an excellent setting for dealing with lightly scratched discs which may cause ripping problems.
HINT: If you are going to burn with DVD Decrypter, DON'T FORGET TO - go back to DVD Decrypter after ripping, to reset the "Mode" from "File" to "ISO - Write".
Now, take that "Puppy" out for a spin and see if it doesn't do a better job :)
Cheers,
Pete
Don't forget to stop back and tell us how you did -

Seems like the beginners are having a problem understanding some of the basics. This post has a lot of info and a bunch pertains to DVD Decrypter and Shrink.
Info for beginners: (I'll mention a few popular programs, but there are others of these types.)
Backing up factory DVD movies has 3 basic steps and a few things to remember. The steps are 1)Decrypt/deCSS; 2)Encode/Transcode (Fit to the target disc, shrink when necessary); and 3)Burn.
You can have one program that does it all, some programs do a couple of the steps and some only do one step or one step at a time.
Decrypting can be done with driver type decrypters like AnyDVD or with apps such as DVD Decrypter or DVD Shrink.
DVD Decrypter is used to decrypt and rip files to the (HD) hard drive. If DVD Decrypter is going to be used as a burner, 2 important things have to be remembered.
1)Use the ISO read mode to decrypt and
2)the file size has to be below 4.37 (GB) gigabytes.
If the file is above 4.37GB, DVD Decrypter cannot burn the ISO file to a 4.7GB disc. [Note: 4.7 is a retail designation for a disc; the actual size of a 4.7 disc that a computer reads is 4.37GB.] File size is important to know.
DVD Shrink can be used to decrypt and rip to the HD. Normally though, Shrink is used to decrypt a disc, using a temporary file, and transcoding the file in preparation to be burned. Nero isn't part of Shrink, but is the default app that Shrink uses to burn automatically. Shrink can also use DVD Decrypter in ISO burn mode and CopytoDVD can also be used. I suggest Nero, as DVD Shrink is already set to use it.
There are a number of transcoding programs, browsing the forums can get a lot of info on those. It's already been mentioned what they do. Just remember, simply speaking, this step is to prep the file for burning.
There are a number of apps on the market now. Due to laws, most of the popular recording programs now are trancoding and burning programs. These recording programs have to have a decrypter. With a driver type decrypter the program runs as though it was one of the older ripper programs that did everything. With the manual type decrypters the files are ripped to the HD and the file then has to be opened by the recording program.
Burner or recording programs are either incorporated into programs or are separate in recording suites. I mentioned Nero as it is a favorite on many forums and a favorite of mine. There are others.
This should give you a bit of an idea of what is going on. Good quick guides for DVD Shrink can be found at http://www.dvdshrink.info and good comprehensive guides on DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter can be found at http://www.doom9.org . Downloads for Nero can be gotten at the Nero website and there are guides as well if needed. Nero has unlimited 30 day full function trials for the Nero suite.

I also read on the forums about updating your firmware for your DVD Burner. How can I tell if my firmware has been updated for my DVD Burner.

Check the manufacturer's website. They normally list any firmware updates for their drives. I've updated both my DVD ROM and burner firmware over the past year. Sometimes the website support section for your PC lists updates, if the equipment came with the PC (as in the case of my DVD ROM drive).

Hi ctljones,
AFA your Nero log goes,
Quote: Data in Burst Cutting Area (BCA) does not exist
It would seem that you have run out of disc space -
So into DVD Shrink we need to go, click "edit" then "preferences" the set the "target size" to 4360MB so that you're not burning to the edge of the disc.
While you're there if you don't wish to purchase Nero, you can also go to I/O tab and "un-tick" "enable burning with Nero". That would allow you to burn with DVD Decrypter (Free) iffin you don't wish to purchase it. As any knowledgeable member will tell you, If you want all of the programs of which Nero's Ultra Edition is made up, it's a value that cannot be beat BUT if all you're going to use is the burning app then Nero is way over priced. CopyToDVD is a much faster burner than Nero and is cheaper and DVD Decrypter, an extremely good ISO burning app, and with the total price of FREE, it out does them all in value vs. quality comparission. Of those facts, all of the most informed members cannot disagree.
As for your firmware, - Let's check for up-to-date Firmware for your burner.
"OK, so what is this "Firmware" garbage?" Fair question. Firmware is a "tutor" who's job it is to eliminate any "bugs" found in your drive and to "introduce" your burner to all the different kinds of media to your burner is likely to run into and to tell your burner a little bit about it. What type of media it is and at what speed to burn it. As new media is introduced OR, as the Mfgrs of your burner find new ways to use it, new firmware updates OR "Flash upgrades" come out to "school" your burner, keeping it up-to-date. It's good to keep your burner up-to-date as it "tweaks" your burner and keeps it operating at peak performance.
Of major Importance - When dealing firmware, you must match your burner's exact model with the proper Firmware. Trying to "Flash" your burner with something "Close" won't do it. It must be the exact firmware for your drive. ("Flashing" is what the installation is referred to when you put the firmware into your drive.) Trying to "Flash" your drive with some other drive's firmware can ruin your drive.
At the bottom of the page look for "What's my firmware? - Try this little tool I found," Download this tool and check out your Firmware's health (up-to-date wise). You can probably get a current upgrade there also -

Always check your burner's Mfgr's "Support" section to see if some newer Firmware is there -
Firmware, You can't burn without it -
I hope this has been of some help -

Quote: Trying to "Flash" your drive with some other drive's firmware can ruin your drive.
Those words are worth repeating. Your investment can go down the tubes if a mistake is made. It's an easy process, some drives will "flash" from a file on the computer and some from a floppy. It's easy, but follow the instructions and use the correct update; even the manufacturer sometimes lists more than one firmware update according to models in their line. Don't be scared, but do be careful.

Now for a show of unabashed favoritism that many of us forum members in the know will agree with. If I had to have only one recording program or suite, I would go for Nero because it covers so much. the recording program Recode2 rivals DVD Shrink. In fact the author of DVD Shrink now works for Ahead (Nero). Use the free DVD Decrypter or the background decrypter AnyDVD (retail) to decrypt and then run Recode 2 to encode and burn. This is the app I use for movies that don't cause excessive compression during transcoding. Before you conclude Nero is my favorite, read the whole post.
Nero has the Burning ROM to burn with DVD Shrink or any other app that needs a burner. It has Express for importing and burning files (my favorite using AnyDVD for doing DVD5 movies), (NVE3)Nero Vision Express 3 for changing MPEG4, AVI and other file types to usable types to record DVD. Plus, there are authoring capabilities. It also does just about anything with CDs. So, for the package price, it is cheap in comparison to a single program.
Owners usually end up using most of the suite's capabilities, unless all they want it for is to use with Shrink. In the past, Shrink would still burn, but the speed was dropped to 2X when the trial expired (time to download again). I'm not sure on that as I've now owned Nero for some time. I first got it to use as the burner for DVD Shrink, way back when. As I mentioned, the Nero suite is available for unlimited 30 day periods for those wanting to try it out or use it on the cheap. One of Nero's reps said they were so sure of their program that they thought most people who try it will eventually purchase (reason for the unlimited trial).
Before anyone asks, I am not a Nero rep, just another of the millions of satisfied users worldwide and an informed forum member.
Pete is right, if all you want is a free burner app, then DVD Decrypter (which only writes ISO format files)is your choice. In fact for DVD 5 it is the only app you'll need. I live in the real world and find that owning several apps can solve the recording needs one can run into, as well as making them easier.
Since I am a regular on several forums, I try to keep up on many apps. So my start list sometimes reads like a whose who. Shrink is a good app, I'll say that up front. It's the best freeware available to record. However, there are better. Here is the list I currently have loaded on my PC (more in the library).
Rebuild with Cinema Craft Encoder (RB/CCE), DVDCopy3, DVDCopy2 (just haven't deleted it yet), Instantcopy8 (IC8), Pinnacle's Instant CD/DVD recording suite, Alcohol 120%, DVD Shrink 3.2, CopyToDVD, Blindwrite, Dr DivX, DVDXCopy Platinum, and last but not least the Nero suite with Recode2. No particular order of preference, they just got written down according to icon location on the desktop. Some of these are leftovers from the the summer's big transcoder shootout we had here on AD.
Utilities, decrypters, authoring programs, and players include AnyDVD, DVD Decrypter, DVD-lab PRO, WinDVD6, WinDVR 3, DVDRemake, Realplayer, Quicktime Player, DVDInfo, WinRar (it can unpack an ISO file into file format), and DivX Player
Many of these apps found their way onto my PC for testing purposes and I left them loaded because I find them useful.
By the way, all these "puppies" play well together (in other words, no interference). Having multiple large hard drives doesn't hurt. Just don't leave programs open that aren't supposed to be and don't turn off ones that should be on. Batch writing programs like InCD in Nero can cause problems and should not even be loaded. There are things one learns, now you don't have to learn that one the hard way.
Lab pro and WinDVR are a couple I still need to check out, but the rest I can recommend; including DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter if all you want is freeware.
