i have figured it out. i was able to get my back up to play if i started with the original. information is split between the two layers. so everytime you start another race you must boot the original. i am also pretty sure there is about a gigabyte of dummy files just to make it need a 2 layer disc. there is no complex scheme to keep this game from being copied. it is simply that dl dvds out there are not good enough to be used to backup a game. if it can be split onto two single dvds backups it would work but you would have to switch the discs alot but it does let you use the eject button when the game is loaded. so each layer would have to be put onto a seperate single layer disc. not sure how i would do it.

tom, I am still working on getting the second layer onto a single DVD. Im not having much luck. I cant seem to find sotware that will allow me to make an ISO of JUST the second layer. I already have the first layer on one dvd.

Hey guess what everyone? I made an unsucessful copy GT4. Sarcasm.

I assume most of the people trying to copy this, dont actually own it. I know that if I owned the game, I wouldnt be wasting away every night trying to copy it, I would be playing it. I assume we have all rented and copied numerous movies and games. Take the money you didnt spend on those and just buy GT4.

For those just tuning in and cant read the first 25 pages of post, here is a fact sheet:

1. GT 4 cant be copied on a SL disc

2. Its a dual layered DVD9 game with the 2nd layer in reverse

3. It is not fun making coasters

4. Its going to be awhile before this one is cracked.

5. I found a Big Gulp cup full of turd, what the hell?

Anyways, anyways, my philosophy is, if I like a game enough, I eventually buy it. I'm a collector, so I will buy the game if its decent. GT4 is beyond decent, its exceptional. I would rather play it, than crack it.

now i know we are getting sooo close to cracking this...i have no problem switching between 1 and 2 disks...i have the weirdest feeling that ps2owns.com (now ps2nfo.com) has a crack for the game...

Rayz some of your summup is inacurate.

The second layer is NOT in reverse. Its actually forward. Just the layer setup is not the same as a movie is printed in. So some people consider it reverse.

the second layer is printed in the EXACT same format as the first layer. Its just 1mm in deeper on the disc. Thats the ONLY difference. (A part from the data being different)

Everything else seems correct.

In answer to your question though.

I own the game. I have played it. I actually do NOT really enjoy it that much. The speed sensation is SLOWER than actual speed. And the handling seems worse than at the posted speed. going 80km/h in a civic that is mostly stock I have never slid off the road while pressing the brakes just before the turn. In fact the corners depicted in the game would normally only require you to take your foot off tha gas for a second, down shift and power through.

In their atempt to make the game a little harder to cheat (gaining position by cutting across the grass, propper braking teqniques......) they have made the game play much less realistic. I still think GT2 was the most realistic of the physics engines. And they said this one would be more like GT2 was for PS1.

So far I am not impressed. That is why I am trying to make a way for this to be backed up. I would rather people didnt have to pay $50 for a game that does not live up to the 4 year hype it had recieved.

I am about to walk away from the (beast) franchise known as GT4 in favor of other games that are more fun. GT2 was the last fun game. GT3 seemed like a chore to complete. Its lost its edge, but I think its one of those games everyone must own.

I have to agree with you Stinky_1, on the car physics, its much different than before. Personally I like the first 2 GT's the best. Nontheless, GT4 is still remarkable.

I'm speaking figuratively about the 2nd layer, since its written differently than what we are used to. Which is why we cant crack it yet.

I am in no way criticizing the copying of this game. There is a lot of good ideas and theories, and someone is going have their 15 minutes of fame when they finally crack this one. I dont have a DL burner, so I'm not bothering with it, but I am definately reading this post until someone says "I copied GT4, and here is EXACTLY how I did it."

i agree. gt2 was good and gt 3 was a chore and gt 4 is marginally better then gt 3. i have kids which is why i use backups. they get into everything and destroy all they touch. so originals are safely locked away. when i read gt 4 with pinnacle dvd copy i get 4.95 gig and with DVD Decrypter i get 5.2 gig. programs i have that split dl dvd s do not recognize ps 2. i am sure someone at swap magic will fix it some day.

dvd decriptor can read a ps2 dvd. It just needs to be put into iso read mode. It also does both layers. I used it to seperate both layers. The problem is it spits out its own format of image. And it has a seperate index tat tells it what order to compile it back into. So to burn it on 2 seperate dvd's I just made my own index. The probelem is that the program wont allow me to tell it that the second layer is really a first layer. So it wont let me burn it to a single layer disc.

dvd decrypter has alot of limitations even though it is the one i use the most. what i think would work with a mod chip is. burn 1st layer onto single dvd then burn 2nd layer onto another dvd which would neccessitate alot of disc swapping because it would need the second disc every time anything loads. just need way better software to do this. or a better laser in the ps2 to read the murky second layer. might want to try info edit.

Tom,

Welcome to my post 1 page back. Thats what I have been trying to do today. I still have not got that to work though.

And you need to swap in disc 2 every time you want to start a race or enter any options on the career map.

once again, i will go through this, ive TRIED splitting up the game to 2x dvdr..and it does NOT work, you will end up with the same results as you would otherwise....you DO need the original (at least till someone figures it out) to boot the game up at a bare minimum.......

I must have missed that post.

You are saying if you put in disc 1 to boot, and the second you see the "safe driving" screen you press eject and swap in the 2nd disc it will NOT boot to the title movie?

How did you get the second layer to be extracted?

alright, i get that the second layer is the source of all the problems but san andreas was dual layer and i DL'd a DVD5 version iso before the release date. Was it that different? I mean whoever did that one did it pretty quickly because i had the game on my hard drive when i saw the article about it leaking. Not tryin to cut anyone down here i know you are working hard on this but i'm just curious.

Hrm.

Well I just made a backup from DVD Dycrptor, and after pulling the Magic Swap I get two different errors:

1st: Not a valid PS2 disc

Then when I eject I get a: Insert a bigger TOC disc

Not sure wtf that means :)

all 3 of the grand theft auto games for ps2 are single layer...and on top of that, the data tracks are written in a normal method...as for how i extracted the data from the second layer, i used apache 2.0 to do that

all sony has to do is to exchange damaged games for new ones and people would not copy them. i copy ones i own to prtect them. but i would not turn in my worst enemy for stealing from a monopoly or the government, which of course is the same thing.

For those of you not too terribly impressed with the game : It picks up after you win a few races, and get a few licenses.

Here's what sparked my interest in the game. If you beat the 2nd special conditions race (I forget which course it runs forwards and backwards on, but it's definitely the second one) you will get an 02 Toyota RAID rally car.

You can sell it for 260K, or keep it for a few races. When you get tired of it, you can sell it, re-win that race (when you re-try that course, but you'll have to clear all your records for that race) and win another rally car.

Anyways, this is an easy way to get money in the game. I'm sure there are other cars you can win and sell without limit, but if it says "You can only win this prize once" don't do it.

Anyways, if you haven't already started racing in the bigger races, this will bridge that gap between being a poor A/B driver, and a rich large course racer.

I know it doesn't relate to backing the game up, but it's information that some people might not know.

Come on guys, stop with the pirated materials. I know that this thread BASICALLY leads to piracy. However, to please the mods, we should draw the line at DISCUSSION. No linking to pirated materials, torrents, etc.

I mean, if we let this go on, it'll get out of control, and this thread will have to be closed.

Let's just keep it to what it was intended to be : A discussion about making LEGAL backups of GT4.

(Now, how legal you make your backup is up to you. Whether you own, rented, or borrowed, it's none of our business)

If someone decodes what the scus file says someone will crack the game so it skips the intro. The scus file is in mostly symbols and stuff. If someone can decode it post it on this form and I will try to crack the game.

If this game can be copied using hdloader or some other hd program for ps2 you can take the hard drive after it is done copying and then put the hard drive in your computer and set the jumpers to slave and when you click on "My Computer" there should be another hard drive. Then we can get the second layer.

Im not sure if the ps2 will copy it on the hard drive, good luck...

the scus file is in hex. so unless you know hex, and open the file in winhex you wont get anywhere.

That ebay link you gave us is NOT the game he is selling. Its an internet matrix. Basically you buy an Ebook on cooking recipees for $25.then you are added to a list of people that want to receive a "free copy of GT4". when 10 other people have paid their $25 for the recipees YOU get a free copy of GT4. Then after 10 more people have got the recipees the SECOND person gets GT4. Now you have 18 OTHER people that are still on the list waiting for THEIR free copy of GT4. SO if you were the 18th guy on the list you would need 180 guys under you before YOu would get your copy.

Imagine if you were the 180th guy on that list!!! you would need 1,800 people under you before you got your copy. By then you could get the game for $20 and not have spent the $25 for the recipees.

This type of thing is borderline illegal. Its known as gifting. The way they get around it is that they do not actually HAVE to send the "gift" its a bonus AFTER you bought the recipees that you "really wanted" anyway.

Could somebody tell me where I can download that Apache 2.0 because I can only find HTTP server Apache or do you guys use that too? I can try on DVD+RW some of your double DVD theories instead of Dual Layer.. Tried that too and my NEC indeed burned OTP.. I saw when I searched on google that Lite On DVD-9 burners CAN USE PTP on Dual Layer, but I don't know somebody with a Lite On so I cant test it.
