hahah! funny.

anyways - I don't think the game can be reduced to DVD5. There are almost no prerendered movies in the game. The size of the game is due to the fact that it has so many cars and tracks, which are not possible to remove.

Audio is a huuuge chunk of the game - and i dont know if tracks can be downsampled or not - but I'd hate to see that happen.

I will stick with the original copy. Its not worth it, I think. Ill definitely give it a shot if a successful DL can be burned, thats for sure.

Oh yea - and the reason this thread is getting off track is because everyone is stuck. Seriously, we've come up with everything and still can't get it to work. I don't think Sony did this on purpose as a copy protection, but it sure works.

This might help out things, by using a program called PSS Plex it will take out the pss files( which were extracted using the vol1 opener) , convert it to mpeg2, and wav files, you could then use another program to shrink (compress) the quality down. Then reput them back as .pss files. Just a thought

bill, just moving the files and shrinking them doesnt work. You have to open the program up and tell it where you put the files. So somebody needs to go through the code and remove ALL calls to the second layer and re-route them to the new location.

I dont see why anyone needs the stupid music in this game to stay at a high bitrate. It sucks! its not mean driving music, its driving your mom to the store music. Take it all out and put some snoop dog MP3's in there or somthing......"park it like its haaawwwwt, park it like its hawwt"

In this Case, All we need now is one competent hacker, and A friend of Sony programmer who made this game. It's going to be a very difficult job ever.

I'm a competent hacker, but since you all laughed at me, I'm not gonna share my working GT4 copy. All I had to do to crack it was use a hex editor to delete all the calls to the second layer, and replace em with duplicate calls the the first layer. Then I used PSXGatev1.2 which allowed me to render the game in real time on my cpu while looking at the actual code that was being read for every stage of the game. I just removed all the code that was used for the arcade game and then all that was left was the code for the sim game, which fit onto a sl dvd-r with about 300 mb to spare. Then I burned it using alcohol, and it works perfectly.

You know, once, I inquired as to how old the average user here at Afterdawn was. Basing it off the intelligence of the posts being written, I guessed that most people here were between 13 and 16.

Turns out a lot of them were older than I am. It was kinda sad. It's not that I'm 19 and decently intelligent, it's that most people are older and quite a bit stupider than me.

So, PS2Guru, give it a rest, man.

If you really got the game working why not share the information? You would get recognised by the members in this forum and many other places, but if you didn't find a fix then why post up that you did - to make members even more insultive towards you... Think mate =)

Give the guy (ps2guru) some slack....maybe he is not bullshitting us....

Let's try to find a solution instead of burning other members.

In my opinion all this leads to is another 30+ pages with worthless information so STOP IT! (and start contributing to the community)

And PS2Guru if this will be your first release: WOW that's an impressive way to start of! (and if not maybe next time)

i stand by my previous post stating that PS2Guru is a douche and has added nothing to this thread - as this does, but i just wanted the 12 year old to understand that.

If you close this thread another one is going to start and will contain the same B.S. that this one has...

Well, back to the real business

gear pro mastering edition 6.05 burns in PTP. It has a free 15 day demo so anyone with some extra DL DVD's lying around should give this a try. I was going to try it but i'm out of DL's and the store is sold out of the cheap ones and there is no way I am paying $40 for 3 when I know I can get them for half that.

PS2guru i hate to break your balls but there's NO way that removing calls too the second layer removed almost 2GB from the game disc ROTFL. You would have to extract the two HUGE .VOL files and insert dummies in the place of some of the shit in there (cars music fmv's etc)....nice try though guy. Oh ya so you just simply copied GT4L1.vol to layer one too and thats it? considering that the two .VOL files are bigger than a single layer disc i find that hard to believe.....what keep telling yourself you got a working DVD5....i gotta go and play some GT4 god damn this games dope

I will personally look into this matter myself. I'm going to get Gear Pro Mastering Edition, and some DL media.

I only know from other people that you're supposed to only be able to burn stuff on DL as OTP, that PTP isn't a possibility yet. But no one's said why, how, or what the mechanics of it is.

No one's explained WHY DVD Burners can't burn PTP and why we need to have DVD presses to burn copies.

I mean, it's a writing method, so I always figured it might have been a firmware issue, but I can find no information on the net either proving, or disproving their theory.

Basically, what I'm gonna do is look at Gear Mastering Pro, see what it can do, if I have a compatible burner, and if I would be able to burn a game in PTP straight to a DVD-R9 with my LiteOn SOHW-832S.

Or if I could upgrade the firmware on that drive (it's rumored that clubcdfreaks is a great resource on hacking your firmware on the drives) to do what I need to do with it.

No one's actually proven that if you copy both layers to PTP, that it will work. Not only that, the rumor mill keeps on going that other games didn't need to be burned like that in order to work.

However, I do have a question : Will Swap Magic 3.3 run a dual-layer DVD+R?

If Swap Magic 3.3 can't do this, then there's no point in me even trying, as I'll have no way to confirm if this works or not.

After you surgically extract the arcade part of the game, the vol files easily fit onto one sd dvd-r

Lemme explain to you guys how video games work. For the most part, most games haven't increased too much in size.

The programs that run the games have been hovering around the same size for a while now. So, the executable files will never be something that 'are sized down'

You can't size down data or executable files, those need to be at full integrity in order to run a game. Without those, you end up having programs that don't run.

You want to know what will size down GT4? It's very simple : Movies, music and textures.

Most pirating groups revolve around one or two incredibly skilled and devoted people. They're the ones who develop tools to extract and convert.

Then a whole load of wannabe groups come along, use their tools, and their methods to try to gain infamy for themselves.

What it boils down to is this : If someone is able to extract, convert, and rebuild GT4, it will probably size down to a DVD5. What will probably happen is that the movie intro, and the music files will either be downsampled, or replaced with dummy files.

Beyond that, if there is any additional protection on the disc, someone will have to crack that protection.

Days have changed from when everyone used to download every single game, rely on the pirating groups to crack the protection and distribute them.

Nowadays, everyone just wants to rent the games, have the tools that help them downsample, rebuild, and crack it themselves.

This is what everyone's waiting for.
The majority of people here want the ability to back up their original copies, they don't want to download an already cracked image from the net. We want tools that'll help us get from an original, down to the cracked, DVD5 versions of it.

And you guys have to be patient. Cracking a game, and then distributing the cracked files is a lot easier than cracking a game, then writing a program that'll do the physical cracking for you.

Why? You have to do three times the work. One, you have to crack the game yourself. Two, you have to write a program that will do all the steps that you did by hand. Three, you have to make sure that it gets every detail that you had to get.

So, if there's actual protection BEYOND the protection schemes already in place for the PS2 (bad data blocks, and such) then crackers are going to have to crack the propietary protection themselves.
(For instance, a .VOL extractor and rebuilder for GT4)

And then, they have to figure out what to do about the movies and music. Finally, they need to write a guide to tell people how to use it.

You see, it's a long process. And it involves more than just cracking it the first time.

So, in the meantime, we just wait.
We actually don't have any involvement with pirating groups, so we just need to rely on the tips of those who do.

Other than that, I'm pretty sure that all discussion on this thread has come to a stop. We've discussed all that can be discussed until either someone tries something new, whether its successful or not, or until someone comes out with an all-in-one solution/guide to backing up this game.

Oh, and if you do have the skill to "remove the arcade part" you WILL save some space on the disc.

Maybe one or two MB.
But that's it.

In fact, if you take out all the executable files in the game, you'll probably end save about 4 or 5MB.

Sorry PS2Guru, you simply can't do that.
And if you did, it'd be pretty pointless.

As a 13 year old, you probably have better things to do, like look up naked girls while your parents are shopping.

Well, I'll tell you what doesn't work:

But still, doesn't that look like it'd fit on a DVD5? By the way, it's called GT4 (NTSC) :)

I wish I could just get a patch, cause I have the original... >:(

Ps2Guru is not a liar, he's a genius, because he ALONE was able to make a working copy of GT4 AND fit it onto a sl dvd-r. Removing the code that contained the arcade game may sound difficult to most of you, but that is because you don't have an IQ of 142. Its also probably helps that I am a ninja.
