I still think 50% of the battle lies in how the disc image is read and what exactly the image file says about what data is where, and whether or not every bit is 100% identical to the original game disc (minus the Libcrypt part of course).

Then I suppose there's the fact GT4 is a dual layer "DVD-ROM" and you are backing up to a different book type (either "DVD-R DL" or "DVD+R DL"), so couldn't GT4 just be getting the book type of the disc and if it's != "DVD-ROM" then stop? Or is the modchip supposed to override these types of system calls?

Anyone tried backing this up to "DVD+R DL"? That's what I'll be trying since most people have been using -R DL.

By the way, Alcohol 120 has some options to check for "dummy files", anyone tried that? Simply reading the disc image with Nero or some other crap utility is not good enough, and the GT4 versions going around on the net might not have been read with aggressive settings.

Here's what I tried :
I used Apache 2 to extract all the files from layer 0. Then what I did was use CDVDGen to build an iso.

I simply put all the files into the IML file in the exact same order that they were in on the original DVD. I made sure that every single LBA was correct. I made an ISO from all of this, burned it with DVD Decrypter and went to work on layer 1. The only file on layer 1 is GT4.vol1 so I used Apache once again to extract it, and then I simply built another ISO with CDVDGen.

So, I burned both ISOs and ended up with two discs. Each disc representing one layer of the game. I booted it, and got up to the black entry screen. The one with copyright info and driving warnings. After that, the disc spins some, and this is where the game supposedly checks for the info on the second layer.

This is my problem : I'm running a slimline PS2 (v12) with a fliptop and swap magic. How and where am I supposed to switch discs? If I press the eject button, the game will pretty much die on me. And there isn't a point where the game stops spinning enough for me to swap the discs. Is there any way for me to boot the game using Swap Magic 3.3 and a fliptop?

Or how do I get past that first booting screen?
I mean, this seems to be the last thing between me and running the game.

I've saved everything, and once I get over this hump, I'm going to write a detailed thread explaining every step of how I separated the layers and got the game to run.

Well, if it's possible for me to do this with a fliptop anyways. If not, then this is pretty much the end of my discussion with this game until someone either comes up with a working method for two discs or a way to get this game to run from one disc.

On another note : While it is true that a lot of people are trying dual-layer discs to back this game up, and that it won't work, all of these people are trying to advance this cause.

However, everyone's free to garbage up this thread with their useless banter, pranks, and misinformation.

It's great, please everyone keep on posting about how it's so useless, and how we all should just stop trying to back this game up. I mean, what better way to advance a thread than to put down its existence, aM i rItE r wUt.

Hey, i dont think it will work. My Tutorial is more or less the same thing but it shows how to burn onto a DL, so you extract one layer then the next then put em together and burn them on a DL. Obviously its more complicated than that.

By the way if anyone has tried my tutorial yet or acutally in the steps of it please let us know.

Cheers

I'm here in China City for a Business purpose, I went one Electonic Market today to buy some games, and I found out that there are many illegal press DVDs(illegally made in Factory but working good in your PS2) were being sold, also GT4 is there. I'm not sure this is working 'cause no one could solve this backing up problems so far. So, I didn't buy it, but someday I may go there to buy it.

If u read the rest of the thread you would know that the pressed hong kong silvers of GT4 DO work. This thread is about backing up of the original GT4 disk using recordable media from your OWN copy. Emphasis on backup rather than piracy here, as i'm sure not everybody can nip down to a HK market and pay HK$5 for it.

Thanks for your kind info. But, I couldn't read rest of the threads 'cause there are so many threads that I don't have enough time to spend searching that. Thanks anyway. My point is wrong.

I have a chinese version and its working fine. You should have bought it!!

About thew 2 seperate discs. As I told you in a PM you need a direct boot mod chip. Or else you need to swap while its spinning.

My mod chip is direct boot and the split second you see that first black screen with the warnging on it you need to swap the second disc in. If it gets to the end of the pause on that screen and you dont have the second disc in yet then it will freeze right there. (That happened the first time I did it). But once the screen popped up I just pressed eject on the PS2 and swapped the second disc in and closed the tray, it booted right up!!

I really dont know if it will work with swap magic though. See everytime I press eject on my ps2 the mod chip tells it that the game is real, so it doesnt matter if I swap a burned copy with a burned copy. It thinks I have the original. With your SM you need to use it every time you change discs. Or you need to change the disc while its spinning.

Stinky_1, Thank you for your opinion, But As I examined it, it(GT4) was a 1 press DVD. I think it's DVD9 version of Chinese, Still I'm not sure whether it will work or not, Because My PS2 is messiah2 inserted, must i go there and get it tomorrow, the time is 12:55 AM, I must sleep....

its not opinion! the fact is that the chinese version of GT4 WORKS!! It works for me, and works for hundreds of other people that have it.

I have the cheapest direct boot mod chip you can buy so if it works on my V5/6 ps2 then it should work on anyones.

So you say Stinky_1 that the game can be played if you burn the two layers to separate DVDs? Or do you mean you can use a dvd-r with the first layer but you need an original or a pressed copy with that to play?
If you can play it with two burned discs only what version did you burn? Jap, US, PAL version? I would be more than willing to test the game with this method =)

I used my chinese version.

I have heard stories of people doing it with the jap and english versions as well. But I can only verify the chinese version for myself.

So just to clarify this to me, you don't need an original or a pressed one for this? If so I'm burning this baby!

And how did you burn the two discs? Can you burn the second layer directly from the iso file you can extract with Apache?

I did not require my original disc after I burned both copies seperatly.

I am using a V5/6 PS2 with a DUO2 SE mod chip. the gardest part was getting the second dvd in the drive in time for the boot to the second layer. After that its just a LOT of disc swapping.

One last thing, what program did you use to extract the first layer of the game, Apache lets me extract only the second layer. Or could I somehow burn only the first layer from the dual layer iso?

Is there anywhere else I can get Apache 2 because ps2ownz has blacklisted hotmail and I have no other email, I have a usa import and a PAL console which I'd like to try the two single layer dvd idea out on. Thanks

p.s. If you have this program and have some web space somewhere and are willing to upload it to there, please post a link on this forum, cheers
