if you open your console up, all you have to do is remove layer one disc and put in layer 2 disc. This can be done is about a second, is this quick enough? (When I get apache 2 I'll try it)

Stinky, is the program actually called Apache? I have looked on yahoo to find out but can't see it. Is there any other programs that would burn the two seperate layers onto dvd5?

Thanks in advance

alucard.cc has pretty much every single tool/ripkit you need.

However, I haven't found an extractor from them that works for GT4.

I used DVD decryptor to make an iso of the first layer. And apache for the second.

Apache can be searched by typing

Apache ps2ownz

I just use the eject button to swap. The ps2 doesnt care if you open it in the middle of booting. As long as you have a direct boot mod chip. The VERY first screen you see with GT4 is when you need to swap to disc 2. When its black and says "safe driving blah blah blah". You gotta get the second disc in BEFORE that screen would normally fade out.

yes, it should just "work" after you have done that.

Be prepared for a LOT of disc swapping though

how do you create an iso with dvd decryptor? might be simple but I am just starting out with the ps2 side of backing up. I used apache to extract the two layers of the iso to two seperate folders. In these foldes it created a gran turismo 4 folder then the contents. I am no looking at two folders on my hdd wondering how to create the iso.....?

I dont know how to use apache that well. I used DVD decryptor and went into the settings. I set it to split the layers at 4.37 GB. This ended up giving me a .I00 and a .I01 file. I then re-created a index file that said .I00 was the ONLY layer on the dvd. This allowed me to burn just the first layer. I also played around forever to create my second layer with DVD decryptor but they really made the program too solid. It wont allow you to use a .I01 file in the index by itself unless there is a .I00 file in there as well. I also tried to make a dummy .I00 file with nothing in it to fool it and it still knew it wasnt right. So Apache worked for the second layer.

As for your freezing on the boot screen I cant help you there. It doesnt work 100% of the time. And Im sure the mod chip you are using could for sure effect it as well.

I Only tested it the 2 times. The first time it didnt work, the second time it did. After that I got sick of the disc swapping and decided it wasnt a worth while method of backing up.

So by the above dual-layer method, here's a theory:

Rip Layer 1 using DVD Decryptor, send it to your PS2 hard drive.

Rip Layer 2 using Apache, burn it on a DVD-R.

Boot GT4 using HDLoader or HDAdvance and put the Layer 2 DVD in the drive. By that logic posted above, it should work, reading "Layer 1" from the HD Image and "Layer 2" from the actual DVD drive.

I'd like to try it myself, but the question is, do I need a DL burner of some sort to rip Layer 2 using Apache?

Edit: Trying it out now. Gonna take Layer 1, send it to the hard drive, then burn Layer 2, and cross my fingers when I fire up HDAdvance...

I beat the Internet. The end guy is hard.

Heh, I'll gamble the blank on it just to exhaust another option. Like many others, using the hard drive I'm able to get to the Copyright screen, and if I leave the original GT4 disk I can play the whole game off the hard drive image.. but it still spins and accesses the GT4 original constantly, thus negating any purpose of the "backup".

So I'll know in 30 minutes either way..

ONE THING IS CERTAIN, NO ONE HERE HAS THE SKILLS TO COPY THIS GAME. THE MOST LIKELY SOLUTION IS TO FIND A WAY TO BURN IT IN PTP WHICH PROBABLY HAS THE BEST CHANCE OF WORKING. NO ONE HAS ACCOMPLISHED EVEN THAT SO FAR. SO I DO NOT SEE THE POINT IN CONTINUEING THIS THREAD. EVERY TIME A NEW CROP OF GAMES COMES OUT YOU WILL NEED THE NEWEST MOD CHIP TO PLAY COPIES. MOST OF THE COPY PROTECTION IS BUILT INTO THE HARDWARE. I WOULD LOVE TO KNOW WHY A COPY WILL NOT PLAY WITH OUT A MOD CHIP. I HAVE HEARD SEVERAL THEORIES BUT IT WOULD BE GREAT TO GET A DEFINITIVE ANSWER. SORRY FOR YELLING BUT THIS THREAD IS GOING NO WHERE.

hah. It is kind of funny how this forum has always been so much against piracy, yet here people are flat out saying they are not buying the game and they want to download it. Did the forum policy/rules change? lol.

Anyways, to N91:
I wasn't telling you to buy ALL games, just GT4 since it cant be copied. You can copy whatever else you want with a modchip. You didn't have to tell me ur age and financial status and ur mom not helping you pay for games or anything. hah.

I DO NOT SEE THE POINT IN 'CONTINUEING' WRITING IN CAPS YOU ANNOYING PRICK

Just keep trying to do it yourself or find a successful rip/patch, everyone. We'll get it eventually. :)

You're right. That's why I'm saying it on the internet, on which you have no idea where I live or who I am. You think it childish, though... I'm not so certain.

I think childish is begging for attention by writing your entire post in capital letters. But this is useless bickering, and hypocritical on my part. I'm finished with this, and want to get back to the important matter at hand.

Does anybody know where to find a good faq on how to use Apache 2.0. I can't get $ony generator to work while installed even with the system fix, and the generator link on Apache can not be selected.

Playstation 2 games can't be copied straight from disc to disc for the same reason that Playstation 1 games couldn't be copied.

What "theories" are you talking about? There is one, and only ONE definitive reason as to why Playstation games of any kind (PS1, PS2, CD, DVD, DVD DL) can't be copied : Physically pressed onto the discs are bad sectors of data. These sectors cannot be read, or copied with conventional CD/DVD players.

This is the one and only propietary check developed by Sony that literally stops most people dead in their tracks from copying or playing copied games.

The other checks, such as calls to specific data, dummy files, or anything of the like are techniques done by the actual game developers.

And no, no one has proved or disproved that burning the game in PTP will work. But then again, even if it did, what's the big deal? Few people are willing to spend so much money on the media, and then go through all that trouble.

Also, there is already a supposed working method : Extract each layer, rebuild each layer to a disc (making sure the LBAs are the exact same as on the original disc) and then to burn each layer to a disc.

Then, using a direct boot method, swap the discs at pretty much every screen.

The drawbacks to this are that there's a ton of swapping involved, and that it's not possible for people using Swap Magic.

What we're waiting for is a ripkit for a DVD5 of the game, or a guide explaining how to convert it to DVD5.

This is truly what most people are waiting for. Seriously, how many people commenting here have tried anything more than burning the game to a Dual-layer disc using DVD Decrypter, Alcohol, or Nero?

When I say "rebuild" how many people are willing to take the time to LEARN how to do it?

It took me about an hour and a half to extract the layers, and rebuild the game to two discs. There was no coding involved. That's a step beyond me, that's for the people who are usually involved in making trainers and such.

All I did, was extract the layers to separate folders, use CD-DVD Generator to rebuild the ISO (using Apache as a reference for what the LBAs should be) and re-burned it with DVD Decrypter.

So many negative comments here, people who are impatient, but unwilling to do anything to further the cause.

If you want to buy, then go ahead. If you've already bought the game, then great. That really doesn't matter here. This thread is about backing up GT4, regardless of whether or not you own the game, plan to buy it, or are simply trying to make a backup of a copy that you don't own.

Anyways, rumor mill says that some people are hard at work on it. I wouldn't be surprised (but I'd be very delighted) if someone came out with a ripkit that did every single step for us. That's usually why these things take so long. Because someone out there probably has enough experience and knowledge to not only get the game to work, but to automate the process for the rest of us idiots.

I mean, other than that, this game is probably too much hassle for people who just want to pop a copy into their DVD drive, ISO it with DVD Decrypter and burn it.
