I have been burning dvd's for a while and then it just started coming up with errors. I get the following message from Nero. (see below)
I have tried reformatting the hard drive and reinstalling all software and drivers. the problem hasn't changed. First my DVD drive was not recognising any blank dvd's and then after installing XP SP2, it does but will still not burn.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

You might want to edit out your nero's serial #. It starts with: 1A23 xxx xxx xxx xxx Someone can steal it.
Your media sounds like the issue: VDSPMS-AB 01. I am not sure what brand of media you are using, but your firmware is not recognizing it. You might want to try to update your burner's firmware to the latest update.

After checking out that media code, I came up with prodye gold -4x and commodore -4x as having that same code.I would be very skiptical using any media with that mfg code. Try slowing down the burn speed, maybe even 1x if you can.
You might want to try some better media like maxell -4x yellowtops. You can try a small 3 or 5 pack and they have very good quality.

Thanks for the info
The only reason I don't think it is the media at this stage is that now, the writer won't even recognise a disc has been inserted. I have checked all drivers and it seems to working properly. Not sure what else to try.

I don't believe it is a media issue. I have the exact same error codes and I am using Ritek 8x +r's. I am 3/4 thru a stack of 100 and am suddenly having these
errors. It's been going on for 5-6 days. Something is going on, like a windows update, virus, worm, MPAA, etc...

Here is my error. I just used the software (Nero Ultra 6 v6.3.1.4 with DVD Shrink 3.2.0.15) 3 days ago and Burned Van-Helsing with no problems. I have burned maybe 30 to 40 DVD's within the past 4 months. Here is the kicker...... I have 3 computers at Home, one I burn with at work, and one that I just reformatted for one of my friends. Each have different DVD-Burners, each using different media (Media that has never faile before, Rid-Tek and Maxell), all using the Nero Ultra 6 v6.3.1.4, ech using DVD-Shrink.
I have tried everything. I have gone back to the basics even. I reinstalled Windows XP, I went as far as installing XP SP1 with no other updates, the SP1 Download is off one of my CD's that I burned last year, so there are no patches keeoing me from Burning. The files will rip successfully to my HDD, then when I install the media, I get this damn error. Sometimes the burn will start and get to 2% and give me this error, I took a pic. http://comtekservices.net/dvdshrinkerror.JPG
From this point it will just lock up.
Here are my comp specs:
1st machine
AMD64 bit 3200+
2x 512mg OCZ Performance Memory PC3200
2x 74gig Raptors
1x 250gig Maxtor IDE ATA133 Diamond 10 HDD 7,200rpm

Sony DVD Burner 16x
all these machines come up with the same error no matter what, except for the model numbers of the drives. They all worked very well, then all of a sudden, they are all dead. Does anyone have any answers?

Guys -
I figured out my problem. Windows dropped my dvd burner down to pio mode. Go into control panel under system, hardware tab, then device manager. Open up
IDE ATA/ATAPI controllers and expand it to show your
primary and secondary ide channels. Under the Advanced Settings tab, if it shows your dvd burner to be in pio mode, Delete or remove the channel that your dvd burner is on. Reboot your pc and let windows re-install it. What I understand to be going on there is windows xp keeps track of read and write errors to the drive. When it reaches a certain number of errors, it lowers the interface speed down to try to correct for the errors it is having. I did the procedure and my drive went from pio mode to ultra dma mode 2.

Our forums aren't the place to troll for customers so I suggest not doing it anymore.

coodaddy, i saw that fix from another forum and will try it. just to ask, did you have problems in the copy phase or the writing phase?
i have burned tons of disks (dell, xp home, DVD Shrink, Nero, tdk) and had never failed until a couple of weeks ago. must have been one of the automatic updates after the original SP2 because after SP2 i was still burning ok for a while. now all i get is coasters during the write phase.
i'll try your solution. from trolling the message boards, lots of people are having this problem and as far as i can tell, it's related to SP2 in some way, shape, or form.
thanks.

I deleted your post because it was unacceptable and you should've known better had you read the forum rules. Now you can either shut your trap about it and carry on or I can make your stay here very short. How's that for a power trip?

Grim -
If I recall correctly, it was during the write phase. I remember it took forever to read the dvd; that would make sense. I had that windows update enabled, so recently it loaded sp2 and shortly thereafter, my problems started. So, I do believe something was implemented in the sp2 that is causing our woes. I will say, that since I did that little procedure, my drive is working perfectly.

all righty then. continuing with the technical discussion. i was finally able to burn a couple of dvds at my max speed 8x. then one of the discs, saw, would not burn at max speed but would burn at the next lowest speed 2.4x. weird thing is, is that previously all of my dvds would burn at the max speed. i am and was using TDK DVD+R rated at 4x
?s:
Is burning at 8x the reason since they are 4X (keeping in mind that i burned about 50 in a row before i started having problems)?
why does DVD Shrink only let me burn at 8x or 2.4x and not in between (logically 4x for 4x media)?
my dvd burner is a Samsung TS42 (or something like that) and burns both + and - formats. Is there any clear difference in media between the DVD+ and DVD- formats. Is one better or more reliable than the other? Haven't tried - yet.
thanks.
