Creaky - If you can purchase online from Rima.com you will get great prices, great media, and fast/low cost shipping. Although maybe the overseas shipping costs may be too much - which would bring up the cost per disc for you. The Sony TY's and the Yuden TY's are the same YUDEN000 T02's except for the writing surface. I am very happy with the TY's I got from Rima.com
kivory666 - The CompUSA find was a lucky shot in the dark. I would have never suspected them to be TY's, specially after I read that Sony 8x media was SONY08D1. Getting them on sale was icing on the cake! Glad you arrived at your distant CompUSA to find the "made in Japan" batch!!

@robtwilk
it was worth a shot once you told me about the sale, since you confirmed the MIJ were TYs...i just had to look, actually had a dream the night i read this thread...just had this gut feeling i would score at least a few batches. :) thanks again.
im just waiting for Best Buy to have another sale on the Fuji's again, i really like the consistency of the Fuji dvd+r TYs i've had with those. not slamming the sonys, they are equally as good, but, i like the Fujis about 1% better~ hehe. reason for this conclusion is it took me far less time to find the MIJ fuji's than the sony MIJ. my local best buy has quite a few of the MIJ fujis, whereas my not-so-local compusa has NO MORE sony MIJ last time i checked~ :)
good day to you and creaky~

You have to be really careful that you will make a saving by ordering disks from the US for delivery to UK. Our lovely customs folk will charge you up to 20% Import Duty (depending upon which category they think your goods fall into), and then they will charge 17.5% VAT on top of the already taxed total.
And if that's not enough to spoil your day, they charge all of the above taxes based on the value of the goods plus the postage and packing charges.
Then the Post Office will charge you a fee for collecting the above taxes when you package is delivered, I'm not sure how this is calculated, but I payed around 7UKP last time.
Oh, and good luck trying to get them to avoid charging all of these taxes twice if you have to do a return exchange.

Ouch! That's just wrong! Sorry to hear you guys have to deal with that.
One hundred TY's from Rima.com were $43 US, no tax, and $4 shipping. One hundred Sony TY's from CompUSA were $39.98 plus $3 tax. What are you guys paying (in equivalent US dollars) for similar media in the UK?

creaky - what does that convert to in US dollars? I guess I could look up the conversion rate, but then I'd need to do more math :) Also, are you indicating you purchased 125 discs?

@robtwilk - yep that was 125 discs. I used to buy 100 at a time from another store for £38 inc of vat and postage.
I have a very simple pound/dollar conversion i've used since a kid - i've always approximated the dollar to be about half, ie 1pound = 50cents. It's near enough for me!

You have to be very careful buying TY's in the UK as there are a lot of fakes around. I get mine from SVP who always supply the genuine article, currently they charge 47UKP (inc postage), for 100 8x TYG02's, at current exchange rates that's 89USD.
It's the same with hardware, the Panasonic ES10 DVD recorder costs around 200UKP here (378USD), but I've seen it advertised in the US for 166USD, that's 87UKP.
No wonder they call this place Treasure Island............

but i'll have another look on svp after cleaning my specs :)

Creaky - I think it's a recent reduction, I payed around 60UKP/100 for my last batch. Currently TY (unbranded), plain 42UKP/100 and full face printable 48/100 inc VAT, post around £5. They're really quick on despatch, it's never took my order longer than 3 working days for delivery.
The most important thing is that they're the real deal, pukka TYG02's, my Benq loves them.
PS. They also do TY CDR's in 100s, Mmmmmmmmmm...........!

@Higgsbsun - cleaned my specs and i found the TY's. Good to know they're reasonable price, tho i'm still sticking to my Verbs, my Sony luvs them and doesn't want to part with them yet. Come to think of it the last lot of CDRs i bought were Verbs too, but usually i just buy any old cheapy CDs in 100 tubs; saying that the silver flakes off the real cheapos, when they run out i'll get some of those TYs

Higgsbsun/Creaky - That's some steep prices on your side of the ocean! I bought the same amount from Rima.com for half that price. I guess I'd need to know more about how much jobs pay in the UK before I would know the whole picture (e.g. In New York City a tiny apartment can run $2,000/mo, but they make much higher salaries in NY).
What's your perception of prices over there - are they really twice as high for the same products?
The real TY's are just fantastic media. I'm bummed that I wasted time, money, and coasters by buying 100's of Memorex media before I knew better.

those are definitely real...i have found my AUTHENTIC TYs to have the GD000000 or GG000000 numbers on the hub, but to find out u can simply use DVD Decrypter, or dvdinfopro, or dvd identifier. all 3 will show you who manufactured your discs. hope that helps~

@Robtwilk - the Government figure for the average UK salary for males in 2002 was 26500UKP (currently around 50000USD). The same government held an inquiry into the UK prices of CDs and DVDs as most people thought they were overpriced, they decided that the prices were not too high and were in line with the rest of the world.
Current UK discount price for a chart CD - 10UKP (19USD).
Current UK discount price for a chart DVD (eg The Incredibles) - 16UKP (30USD).
How do these prices compare with the US?

i use dvdinfopro (free trial, thouh you can install the next month's trial if it runs out). that should be sufficient, if i recall correctly you can only use this to check a burnt disc, not a blank dvd. However you can get at the media code etc info off the blank. There's also dvd identifier but haven't used it for ages so can't remember how it works.

adouble11 - Programs like Nero InfoTool, dvdinfopro, Decrypter, etc. will look at the blank disc in your drive and tell you the media code. See this website for everything you need to know about media > http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
The problem is that some unsavory companies are creating fake discs with the TY media code.
There is another identifier on the disc that can be seen with the eye - this is on the data side near the hub (inner circle). It is very small and hard to read, but it should have numbers like GD000000, GG000000, TG001133, or TG001158. These all appear to be genuine TY media.

Sometimes people like to learn things. For instance I want to learn how to read my discs regardless if the ones in hand are authentic. For those who assisted me on this, thank you.
