L-Burna, you said the IOPRP300.img is responsible for the DVD checks. Is it possible to run GT4 - or just the IOPRP300.img file - on an emulator in some kind of debug mode and see exactly where in the code it is hanging/crashing so that the dvd check code can be identified - and edited out? I was also wondering if any of the PS2 game developement programs that are around could be used to debug the games code to achieve the same effect.

:) even though i'm not l-burna,he might be of a different opinion, but there isn't really any reliable PS2 emulators about....i haven't looked at the game for a week, had other things to do,but will be looking at it again soon.

I just found this info - not directly related to GT4 full version - and it may be of some help with the dvd checks or creating a patch to remove them, especially step 3:-
(Translated from french)
This documentation with for goal to make a backup copy of Demo Gran Turismo 4 BMW.
1 - Copy the entirety of the DVD Gran Turismo 4 DEMO BMW from your hard disk, in a repertory named for example "GT4BMW".
2 - Decompress the contents of demoBMW_ripkit.zip in same repertory "GT4BMW".
3 - Carry out "1_DVD.bat" to eliminate the dvdchecks and the time limit.
4 - Carry out "2_Extraction.bat" to extract the contents from file GT4.VOL. This stage will create under repertory named "extracted" which contains all the files of the play of which some were modified during the operation in order to make hold the play on CD.
5 - Executez the file "3_Reconstruction.bat" which will rebuild file GT4.VOL 10 - It does not remain you any more in the case of a slide, has éxécuter 4_iso.bat to generate the Iso image to be engraved then with magiciso for example or in the case of a pucée console, simply to engrave the files of your repertory "GT4BMW" (not sub-directories nor files of the demoBMW_ripkit) on CD with Nero for example in 2/xa mode.
list files to be engraved: "GT4P_BMW.IMS" "SYSTEM.CNF" "SCED_526.81" "IOPRP300.IMG" "SIO2MAN.IRX" "SIO2D.IRX" "DBCMAN.IRX" "DS2U_D.IRX" "MCMAN.IRX" "MCSERV.IRX" "LIBSD.IRX" "USBD.IRX" "LIBPDI.IRX" "PDICDVD.IRX" "PDISPU2.IRX" "PDISTR.IRX" "PDIUSB.IRX" "LGDEV.IRX" "GT4.VOL" Good road. Pricer

:) thats what we have all been working on....trying,to make a bat file for patching,it's finding where the checks are...now i realise you said it may not be directly related, but i personally think that, that .bat file wouldn't work as there is no Demo Gran Turismo 4 BMW,in any of the folders, well not in mine anyrate :),although, nothing is impossible,i wouldn't mind getting hold of those files(kit)you just showed us

to find out where the checks and breakpoints are you could use a program like this:
http://playstation2-linux.com/projects/svvudb
the downloads are for xp.

not with the last posted topic but ive been talking to my modchip installer a fair bit lately thru email and he seems to think that u might be able to flash the mars2/marspro modchips with the toxic bios v1.3 becuase the mars chips come flashroms and i am now 100% positive i have a mars2. so hopefully he will try and flash the a mars modchip he has with a toxic bios v1.3 as long as it will not cuase harm to the chip or ps2 and he will give me bac the results.

(cant wait for sunday to come so i can get a working backup from the market so i can have a look what they done so diff)

Has anybody been messing with ppfstudio or either makeppf.exe for creating a patch to get rid of the dvd checks?Just wondering, because I have looked at alot of programs, too many to be honest.I really do think a patch could probably bypass those dvd checks, not sure if the recent ones will work though.I tried Dvd-Scan 3 patches and they didn't seem to work,so I will go back and keep working with different patching programs.Hopefully one will break the Dvd checks, you never know though.I really don't feel like looking at hex codes for a long time to see what matches and what doesn't,so that I guess can be left to someone else. You can call me lazy, but for real it is time consuming and it could take weeks to search all that information. The programs listed are just like WinHex or HexWorkshop, they will give you the code which is then left up to the person to manually modify.Like samuels said, this game is not booting from Dvd checks. They block us from reaching the actual game,GT4 has it's own encryption also so this is a downfall for all of us.I am betting a program would have to be constructed to get through this encryption.I am wondering how they applied the Dvd checks to make it impossible for CMP v1.1 patcher to not even recognize it.I am thinking it has some kind of code that rejects any modifiction to the file, unless manually messing with the indepth codes.I hope Midnight Club Dub City 3:Dub Edition doesn't have any kind of protection like this or Dead to Rights 2:Hell to Pay.

If the DMS4 mod chip and toxic bios 1.3 CAN read and play a backup of GT4, would it be worth looking into the toxic bios itself - rather than the game - for the answers regarding the dvd checks, as if this combination of hardware and software has beaten the game, the info we need must be in the bios somewhere

So, L-Burna, let me get this right : You've pretty much gotten the files resized, and ready for DVD5. The only thing you're doing now is looking for a program that will search for the DVD9 checks, replace them with a DVD5 checks, and hopefully be portable enough for a person to have it done automatically and on any ISO of the right kind. Am I right?

Looking at the IOPRP300.IMG with PSDIS gives lots of file functions but these two main file functions look interesting:
CDVDMAN and CDVDFSV

These contain many functions including :

fileIO DOPEN name= %s layer= %d\n
fileIO GETSTAT name= %s layer= %d\n
fileIO OPEN name= %s mode= 0x%08x layer %d\n
DdvDual_info: %02x\tLayer1_LSN:%d opo_oe_para %d\n
CDVD: Exchange it for the Layer_%d_Disk_Please.\n
CDVD: Layer_%d Disk not found\n

etc...etc (There are more)

So it looks like the DVD layer checks are in the IOPRP300.IMG file like L-Burna said (L-Burna thought I would post this here and not at backuptools.co.uk as this post moves quicker).

Now sorry to say my PS2 assembly language programming is none existant. My assembly language only goes as far as 6502 and 6800 chips sorry. Anyone else have any idea?

To look at what is happening in the code of the game when it hangs on the black screen (and see what files it is accessing when it hangs etc) u have to use a debug program for ps2 games. Such a program is svvudb for windows which is available at:
http://playstation2-linux.com/projects/svvudb.
this enbales you to step through the code, line by line, so you can find errors or the magic dvd check.
i haven't tried this myself cos after 3 days of owning gt4 my ageing ps2 scratched the disc and it won't load now!

Many post later

So far nobody has made an succesfull backup

Several people claim to have pirated versions or other self hacked versions of GT4.

I have the solution for all of this:

Buy the original! It's a lot of money, yes, but it is worth it.

I think we have to wait for the crack to put the backup on our HDD's but don't expect that someone on this forum will crack it. That's bull, otherwise someone already came with an solution weeks ago.

Buying the game isn't the issue.
It's backing up the game you bought that is the issue!
As Ill__c said his ageing ps2 scatched the F@#K out of his disk if it had been a backup he wouldn't give a F@#K

I'm just waiting for Logitech to frickin' release some more Driving Force Pro wheels with pedals that work properly so I can buy one and enjoy the game how it was meant to be played.

Really, all of you should just do yourselves a favour and try this game with one of the Driving Force wheels (preferably the 900 degree Pro), you'll be amazed at how well it works.

I played the game with a controller after about 10hrs with the wheel, and it was pathetic! It just feels really lame, driving a car with your thumbs. I can't enthuse enough how crap it is with a controller! And yes, I use the dual analogue configuration.

what u talking about crowy?

i dont think anyone can make a backup of this disc, its been over 3 months since this game came out. Usually top crackers would get a patch out within a month but I don't think they know how to back this game up. I think Sony have done their homework, but i'll never give up, I wont let Sony tell me that its not ok to make a backup of my own game that I bought from a legal shop. No one is getting anywhere in this forum and I think that if we all work together on this we can actually make a working backup. The top crackers are people like us, they all have brains like us, so why is it that we can't make this backup. I think some of us are wrong, some of the people in this thread are saying that you need to downsample the audio and video to get this game to work, I don't think so, I looked at the hex codes using winhex and both the GT4.VOL and GT4L1.VOL files are the same codes, there is no difference in the codes. The only difference is that GT4L1.VOL is slighty larger than GT4.VOL and it has got more hex codes than GT4.VOL. The only thing we need to do is to get rid of those checks, if we do that then we don't even need to put it on a DL DVD+R.

"not a valid PS2 Disc"

Can't Swap Magic cope with DL discs at all?

The Toxic BIOS files are mainly used for the modchip. What they did was mess with the hardware issues of the modchip.I doubt it would be possible to strip out the codes from the BIOS files to have it work for swap method.I do believe it could work for other modchips though, since it would store it on memory of the modchip.I also noticed that at ps2-scene.org they are messing with the .elf files from ToxicOS bios. They are implementing them into HDD projects.I am guessing, maybe sometime soon they will release a modified HDD version to use the function from ToxicOSv0.3 HDD use. With swap magic there is no way to store anything on the PS2,so it would have to come from either manually going in and deleting the Dvd checks or either by a built program that can bypass this new encryption maybe patch the .img file to get rid of the Dvd checks.

Ikari : There are plenty of half-decent wheels made by logitech for the PS2 that will work with GT4. The best is the newest Driving Force Pro. I bought one about a month ago, and I can't see myself ever playing another driving game with a controller ever again. It changes the way you drive. The only problem with it is a hefty price tag, at $150 USD.

TheLatics : No. Swap Magic won't read DL discs. Not at all. Also, burning GT4 to a DL disc won't work anyways, unless your PS2 is modded with a DMS4 chip with the newest Toxic BIOS.
