@acets - yeah i saw that you were sorted, however i still added the comments based on the log entries. You should still back off the target limit from edge of disc. If you're using Memorex media the comments are valid as you will get sporadic success/failures as Memorex is the pits, hence good and (more likely) bad success rates

acets,

Good, stay with that media - If it was Memorex - only 10% of Memorex is made by MCC. if it is Memorex, you were lucky this time. Try not to gamble.

When attempting to achieve the best burn, consider reducing that burn speed to the 4X level. Iffin you have a new 16X, DL burner, you'll probably do well at 6X. It is my feeling that 8X and over leads to occasional coasters, even when using top grade stuff such as Taiyo Yuden's OR Verbatim DataLife Plus media.

Cheers,

Pete

(Don't forget to set your Target size to "Custom" 4300MB as was suggested by creaky

I too have been having very similar problems, and I'm wondering if it has anytihng to do with the copy-potection on the DVD itself.

In the past when I have gotten the "Burn process failed" error, I chose the "Re-author" as opposed to the "Backup!" option in DVD Shrink 3.2. I would then just drag the main title over and it would burn succesffully. This wouldn't give me the DVD functionality, but it would give me a copy of the movie.

But for this most recent attempt at burning even this method failed me. I have read this thread front to back, and have yet to try all suggestions, but before I invested too much time and money into this, I wanted to determine whether the copy-protection of the DVD would cause the problem.

As soon as I update my Nero I will post a log if it continues to fail.

Thanks for any help.

Also Scuba:

I just read your guide (linked in your sig). Do you think that this could be solved by installing DVD43?

Let me know and thanks.

Just in case anyone else saw this and wondered the same thing...it was indeed a simple fix. I reduced the target size to 4360 MB, and downloaded and now run DVD43 on my computer. I'm not certain, but I seriously doubt I have an 80-pin cable running into my burner, but I do have high quality media purchased from http://www.meritline.com. Indeed worth the 30 cents per blank ;).

So anyway, thanks for the quick responses guys....wait nevermind. But I figured it out anyway...me and my intuitive self.

At this moment in time, DVD43 will rip 96% of the encryptions out there BUT if you want a good FREE proggy, begin using DVDD -

It will do 100% of the encryptions out there and it is updated far, far faster than DVD43

Ciao

Well, the files total to be about 3 GB and the DVD is 4.7 GB...

For some reason after I try burning on to a coaster, my DVD RW doesn't respond.

I'm not sure what you're trying to say . . . .

If your file is say, 3GB, then Shrink doesn't do anything other than to burn 3 GB of files to your disc.

I don't understand trying to burn to a coaster unless you're saying you got a coaster after the burn - ?

A silly question ? Have you used Shrink and do you have a problem ?

If so . . . . Perhaps a tiny bit of backgroung info would help . . . .

Perhaps it's a defination thing.

A "coaster" is what we call a DVD which has been burned and errors have occured during the burning that makes the DVD unusable. We then "Joke" that the burned disc can only be usd as a beer coaster (to prevent those un-sightly wet beer-can rings on the livingroom coffee table).

NOW,

What are you talking about ?

After I burn a coaster, I can't take the coaster out of the drive. it stays in the drive. In other words, the DVD drive stopped responding. I don't know if that is normal.

ahab336,

So sorry, you did get lost in the mess. It happens now and then - we jump from thread to thread and from forum to forum and we don't see everyone -

First off - check your IDE cable. If it isn't 80-pin (well really not "pins" but the wires) you should defiantly change it to increase your transfer speed and lesson chances of errors.
Second, as of this second, DVD43 s/b able to rip about 96% of the DVD's as its just been updated to cover the ARccOS encryptions. If you like the way DVD43 works, you might want to buy AnyDVD. It breaks encryptions sometimes before it is released. Well worth the $39.99(USD)

If you don't want to spend the $$$$ then keep DVDD around - it's the best there is for the price.

Finally, you are missing a super program that's right at your fingertips, Nero's Recode2. Written by the same Bloke that wrote DVD Shrink so you'll feel right at home using it. You seem to like the "movie only" thing except your lose of functioning menus Well, using Recode2 in the "Remake a DVD" MODE will allow you to strip away the stuff you don't like and have your menus too. Also, since the same guy is doing both, you also have encoding controls (like the Quality Enhancements) to keep your picture quality up. Those that have tried it have made the switch. Give it a chance . . .

Cheers,

Pete

@ r1ngu,

Still trying to guess here, we know nothing about your PC, Burner, your media, exactly what you're burning with what So, I'll say that if your burner "locks" up when you screw up a burn (still don't know why you can't burn) I would guess that you'd have to close whatever program you're using so it isn't "locked". Many programs "lock" OR control a burner so that you don't accidentally open the drawer while a read or a burn is in session. When you trash a disc - the program may still think it's working. Close the program and the drawer will operate.

I'm done - nothing more until you can act like someone who wants help and decides to give us the info to help !

Ciao

Thoughts, ~ I can only wonder what he's been up to OR what he thinks he's doing. I never heard of pple having so many coasters. One would think he would be asking how to do it so he doesn't ever have coasters. I got 1 coaster last week, a friend, thinking he being nice, gave me a pack of 50 Memorex for my birthday, God do I love Memorex, NOT ! ! I try every once in a while to work through crappy discs, they do burn BUT who knows how long they will play. Otherwise, I rarely ever get a coaster unless I'm using 2 or more burners at the same time OR, if I try to hurry and burn faster than 6X. Many times I'll get away with it BUT it's a gamble and coasters are the price one pays for using crappy media OR trying to save a few minutes.

I've been a little amused reading you guys (some of you really need to take a breath)... I'm a non'geek type that just wants to know how to burn a movie I rented to a DVD R to watch later ...without having to go through an extended process... I have a brand new Dell with all the bells and whistles.. 16X double layer burner... isn't it possible to download say DVD Shrink and put the disc in the burner and just click and burn the stupid thing?? now be respectful... I'm a middle aged woman who blushes easily and my spelling may not be perfect...

@5rebel5 - i am a mini-geek (approaching middle age no less!) and totally agree with you. However while there are companies out there constantly making sub-standard media there will always be problems. And the very nature of the PC itself means there is always going to be a multitude of standards that aren't simply going to 'just work', which is odd considering how long PCs have been around and the popularity they have gained over the years (i remember in the earlier days i used to go into places like Virgin Megastore and the games dept was like another planet; i was always the only normal person in there).
I support very large servers at work and those things (software and hardware) are built to just work, but there's also a lot of messing about to do be done with them.

You're right, it must be amusing to read some of this stuff as a non-geek, and it's quite sad that there are those of us that put so much effort into such simple things, especially over what are usually quite simple things really. But the other side of that coin is that non-geeks do need help with things, and when they don't know anything about a subject, things do tend to get overcomplicated as so much effort is needed to educate/help that person.

At the end of the day, at home and at work i want the same thing, for things just to work, even though i'm paid a lot of money to be a geek. But computers are probably never going to get quite that simple, especially as there are cowboys companies out there who are allowed to make substandard products.

edit- and as usual i've over-explained things!. To answer you properly, you could just download DVD Shrink, follow a guide such as in a few people's signatures in this thread, or in the Guide section at top of page. However the nature of PC's and DVD burning may well find you look to somewhere such as this to indeed get help for problems you might encounter. You may find that you have no problems at all. DVD Shrink is a great program, i use it almost exclusively as it is so simple to use. What Shrink can't do is cope with new copy porotections/future copy protections as it's no longer updated by the author. However a little searching and you can find help with that (especially if it's only the odd film you intend to copy)

good luck!

I have tried everything except different media. I purchases some Verbatim DataLifePlus 8x, but I haven't actually tried to burn any of them yet. I have been too busy. If it doesn't work, then I guess I'll just give up (or just use my "work-around" method).

so PLEASE O GOD WILL SOMEONE HELP ME. PLEASEEEEEE.
-lmao!. i shall try. Hope you really have bought 'real' better media, not no-name stuff, otherwise you'll have even less money. Right, let's delve into your logfile..
Quote:
Nero API version: 6.3.1.26
- might be worth getting an update to 6.6.0.12 or .13 as yours is quie old now
Quote:
Recorder: <HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4020B>Version: A105
- there's at least an A109 firmware out; there may even be newer

CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVD-ROM GDR8161B atapi Port 3 ID 0 DMA: Off
CdRomPeripheral : HL-DT-ST DVDRAM GMA-4020B atapi Port 3 ID 1 DMA: On
- get DMA set on that dvd-rom drive or it's gonna keep affecting your other drives. Try here - http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/petesguide1.html
Quote:
Physical memory : 510MB (522988kB)
Free physical memory: 95MB (97408kB)
- boy ohh boy that's bad - you're close to running out of memory, which means that Windows will start 'swapping' ie using virtual memory, which is one of your hard discs. Plus without DMA on one or more of those discs, you're gonna get crappy burns. Coupled with no-name media....hmmmm.... Free up more memory, ie close down more background processes etc, or shutdown the internet, then virus checker etc (hope you use virus checker etc). Anyway, XP hogs mosts of your 512MB, i recently got an extra 512MB as Nero was struggling with what XP would leave of my original 512MB.

Last address to be written: 2245823 (499:04.23, 4386MB)
- that's saying that the disc is 'capable' of holding 4489MB. Your target size seems to be set to 4386MB (or you've only got 4386MB of data to write to this disc). If you used DVD Shrink to create this film, set the target size to say 4300MB - ie further away from the edge of the [crappy] media; if you use other software there's probably a similar setting)
Quote:
Disc Manufacturer: LONGTE - N 001

Use Maxell +R's not the -R's as they cannot be trusted.

Beside lowereing your speed consider if you are attempting to burn -R media, lower the size to 4200MB (4360MB is for good qualityu discs).

Of main concern, Don't use Nero Express !

Use Nero's Burning ROM.
If you have a Nero OEM package, download the full Nero vbersion as you need to use Noero Burning ROM.

Download Nero full version
http://ww2.nero.com/us/nero-up.php

Use the Burning ROM Mode -

Follow this ~>
(You may wish to write it down)

HINT:
First, create a folder for your work on your desktop OR somewhere on your HD where you can find it again. - Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (it's case sensitive) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it's contents in order to work properly -

Burning a file made by DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use your "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don't use Nero's Wizard), trace your path back to C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management., you don't have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished and ready to go . . . .

OK then, is everyone comfy ? Good - its now time for - -
"Uncle" ScubaPete's Step by Step, Let's burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
Please follow this guide EXACTLY - I'm going to attempt to make this as easy and painless as I possibly can. To get to Nero Classic, follow the "Bouncing ball". First, - lets go to Start, All Programs, then Nero, then Nero Ultra Edition and finally Nero Burning ROM.

When you open Nero Burning ROM, you will be at the "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either DVD or CD, choose "DVD". Directly under that click on the "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT the main screen.
You now are in the "DVD Video" window. In the left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In the "File Browser" screen, 3rd from the left, trace your path to the VIDEO_TS folder, the one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in the right screen. Click on the top file, hold down the "Shift" key and then click the bottom file thereby hi-lighting the entire column of files. Click and (holding the left mouse button down) drag the entire column of files to the open screen, second from the left and release the mouse button. Now click the icon on the task bar that shows a match
on a disc
, and then click "OK" and now, clear the room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STAND AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from Ms. Computer. Do not fold spindle or mutilate and never mess with the lady when she's working - it could be hazardous to your health, (Government warning) -
Go and have your coffee, and bring me back a cup ~ when Nero is done, she will let us know ;-))

Enjoy your backup,

"Pete"

The ?Old Man? Pete (ö¿ô)
