Hi everyone - newbie here. Just thought I'd add my story here. I was a happy DVD SHRINK/NERO COMBO burner until one day it just stopped working - i of course blamed my Imation and TDK disks and Nero (although some of these worked) and anything else I could think of. Went on forum and got plenty of advice - upgrade firmware, use better media, Shrink more to avoid burning to edges etc. However, none of these changed a goddamned thing - there was one piece of advice that did work and I'm sad to say I ignored it at first because I though it was superfluous. However, after trying everything else I gave it a go - all it is is dedicate your computer to burning - no internet connection on, no programs running - and Whooppee - DO! - 2 burns attempted - 2 burns successsful - both on the much maligned Imation spindle disks. Just thought i'd mention this as it might be a good start for people before they change firmware, software, hardware etc.

I am back! Last month I got on this forum and was having some PCA errors; now, I've started to get Communication Errors. I can't get a log because my computer freezes after the burn fails so sorry I can't post it. I can burn CD's fine, but when I try to burn IMG onto DVD I get the "cannot write to sectors ###-###: Communication error" or something to that extent. I've made 150+ DVD's without much error but now I can't seem to get this to work. Can anyone help?

The reason why I hadn't "addressed" the issues I had before was because I had fixed my problem by simply giving my burner its own power connector. Since then I have made flawless copies and had thought I was in the clear, so to speak.

A few of these seem to be plausible explanations and I am going to look into a lot of them, particularly the IDE controller card driver being out of date.

I did have Roxio and DirectCD installed but I uninstalled it a while ago. Right now I only use Nero and Dvd Decrypter. How would I go about getting rid of the extra stuff? I am going to look into the IDE drivers and so forth and will be back.

Sorry if I seemed rude when I last posted- I suspect that was your implication in the beginning, if not, it is a misunderstanding- but I had fixed my problem quickly and thought I didn't need any more help. How you and all the other here help people that are having problems is quite noble and obviously helpful; most companies are slow at responding to customers and this place is a god-send for them (and myself, in this current situation.)

sorry about the refernces to 'last month'. I am very anal when it comes to detail sometimes, helps me track things by being very exact, that's all.

Roxio and direct cd are indeed what installs those drivers. hmmm... i'd investigate the other link i sent you, then worry about the packet writing stuff last

I am still trying to get drivers for my motherboard but the ASUS site is REALLY slow. I keep getting load errors because of their site connectivity. No problem with the "Last month" event (and that is how it shall be known- the "Last month" event.)

I noticed in your error message that disk type was unknown. I believe this might be a problem. Use media that are known to work with this type of software.

Hi denzemen, welcome to aD,

It sounds like a media issue. You are probably using a poorer quality and you're burning too close to the discs edge. That's why you get almost to the end and what's happening is, your disc has run out of a good dye application. Many times, in poorer media, the dye toward the discs outer edge is uneven OR sometimes, even absent :(

Reducing your DVD Target size to "Custom" and setting the size around 4200MB will give you plenty of room and a good dye base. Or, if you're using good media like Verbatim's or Taiyo Yuden's you can set the size to "Custom" ~ 4360MB.

When using Nero, you should be using either Nero Burning ROM or Recode2. Where it says "DVD-5", click the "Pull-down" arrow and change the DVD-5 to "Custom" and type in your size in MB. You cannot go wrong by setting it at 4200MB.

NOTE: To avoid other annoying errors, no matter what discs you're burning on, always burn no faster than 4X. Controlled burning is a magic solution to ensure a good backup.

As for quality, A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! Phillips, Fuji +R's (not the -R's UNLESS they are made in Japan), Sony, TDK, HP, "Branded" RiData Go3's, Maxell +R (not the -R's as they cannot be trusted), Sony, Ritek G04 and G05's (not the 01's or the 02's), Verbatim - DataLife, Verbatim - DataLife Plus and media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" BUT, it must say "Advanced METAL AZO", this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc.As a general rule, the majority of discs manufactured by Taiyo Yuden, Mitsubishi, RICOH and most Ritek are good bets. Look closely at those discs we recommended, you will see some dye types not listed by us. Those are poor risks even though the same company makes them. Prices online from SuperMediaStore.com, Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .36 (USD) a disc - and just recently, a "Super Sale" had 100 Taiyo Yuden discs, 4X for $.25(USD)ea. PLUS they all have an excellent return policy. As a passing note, when buying Verbatim's, they come with a lifetime warrantee. Return them with your sales slip OR register receipt and a new one will be shipped to replace it.
For the best online media stores to shop, try -
Mertline.com

Thank you for the advice contained in this thread, although I didn't report my problem here, the advice has helped me solve it. Incase it might help someone else this was my problem and solution:

I bought a spindle of Maxell MXL RG03 (DVD-R), and they just refused to burn on my Liteon LDW-851s drive, although other +R disks were burning fine. (I'm using Nero and DVDD) I'd read these were good disks, so persisted.

I went down the route of a software conflict, so I unninstalled an old version of Easy dvd and InCD (that came from the Nero site), and restarted my writer.

I don't know which bit did it, but the disk are burning fine now.

Thanks

i want to ask a question (newbie in this forum). What is the best media to use to burn movies. I was getting some results with TDK and I know memorex is crap, but which one is the best? I have a 12x DVD burner that lately has been giving me coasters. I use DVD Shrink, then Nero or DVD Shrink then DVD Decrypter to burn an ISO image. Please help, I am getting "cyclic redundacy check" error and the long one that's on here.

Hi jkrzwld,

There are several discs that are excellent to use but none that I would use burning at 12X.I recommend burning at 4X no matter what you're using. Burning Video is hard work and trying to go too fast will get you coasters no matter what.

Eliminating errors and going for the "Best burn" ~ Tips ~

When attempting to achieve the best burn, consider reducing that burn speed to the 4X level. Iffin you have a new 16X, DL burner, you'll probably do well at 6X. It is my feeling that 8X and over leads to occasional coasters, even when using top grade stuff such as Taiyo Yuden's OR Verbatim DataLife Plus media.

The second part of the solution is to always use a decent grade media.

Newegg.com

And,
Supermediastore.com

Shopping around can prove worthwhile - Staples, as of this date, offered HP+R DVD's (I LQQked them up in MediaMatch and they are made by Mitsubishi) for $18.00 per 50. Verbatim's were on sale $10.00 rebate for a pack of 25, $20.00 (USD) for a pack of 50 AND Taiyo Yuden where on sale with their -R, 4X DVD's for $.25 each (USD) in packs of 100, a fortnight past - Think of it, Taiyo Yuden's for $25 ea. There are sales all the time for the "GREAT" stuff - So you sea, quality isn't always expensive ~

Hey guys.

Here's my problem.

Over the summer I've been using Lite-On SOHW 1673s external burner i believe. I was using a dell 700m laptop and crappy memorex media with DVD Shrink and Nero.
Every single DVD i burned ~50 of them works.

Now i switched to my desktop. Self made P4 2.3 Ghz 512 Ram with WinXP Pro. And most of the DVDs i made start skipping and freeze towards the mid-end to watching them.

I just plugged the burner into the usb (2.0) ports in the back and updated the firmware.

I switched the size to 4300MB as suggested and will see if that works.

Any other suggestions?

-Jake
