First would like to say I?m pretty good with computers so you don't have to approach this as if a newbie was writing it. I recently started using DVD Shrink I understand all it's features pretty well. Everything goes fine with the decrypting and encrypting, but when it comes time to burn the dvd it keeps failing after a short while I?ve tried TDK DVD+R and Memorex DVD-RW, no difference still fails. Used DVDXPlatinum in the pass with no problems. Error log is below.

Analyzer5,

Please use the "edit" button at the top-right of your post to remove your Nero S/N so others don't use it.

To address your problem,

Let's look at your log -
Quote:
Last possible write address on media: 2298495 (510:46.45, 4489MB)
You are burning right to the very edge of your discs (which are poor to begin with). Being of poor quality they are prone to have little to no dye at the edge of he discs. - I suggest dialing back your DVD Target size to around 4300MB generally found as a "Custom" setting on DVD Shrink and Nero. You'll stand a far, far better chance of getting a sucessful burn that way.
Quote:
Data in Burst Cutting Area (BCA) does not exist

As you can plainly see, there isn't any place to write too. again, lower your DVD target size.

Both TDK and Memorex are poor quality media - consider using a better grade media for backup video work ~

Eliminating errors and going for the "Best burn" ~ Tips ~

When attempting to achieve the best burn, consider reducing that burn speed to the 4X area. Iffin you have a new 16X, DL burner, you'll probably do well at 6X. It is my feeling that 8X and over leads to occasional coasters, even when using top grade stuff such as Verbatim DataLife Plus media.

The second part of the solution is to always use a decent grade media. I suggest something like those discs made by Taiyo Yuden, Ritek, Mitsubishi or RICOH. Unfortunately they are also the discs most plagued by pirate Mfgrs. and for that reason I like dealing with Mertline, Supermediastore OR Newegg who have a great return policy on their products. I have had great luck with RiData and Verbatim DataLife Plus discs and their prices are extremely reasonable.
As a passing note, when buying Verbatim's, they come with a lifetime warrantee. Return them with your sales slip OR register receipt and a new one will be shipped to replace it.

For the best online media stores to shop, try -

Mertline.com
http://meritline.com/

Newegg.com
http://www.newegg.com/app/ViewProductDesc.asp?description=17-132-344&depa=0

And,

Supermediastore.com
http://www.supermediastore.com/media1.html

Something to watch out for, ~>
In today's market, now more than any other time, beware of pirated fakes.
See articles at the bottom of my post ~

DVD Video media quality notes;
Memorex is an excellent example as DVD media goes. 90% of Memorex, made by CMC, is sub-standard as far as DVD backups are concerned, figures as high as 50% coasters have been reported (One member bought a stack of 50 and got 23 good burns.), not what I would call an impressive record. Memorex made a name for itself with their magnetic tapes (VHS and audio cassettes) and have been living off it ever since. There are 4 different companies that manufacture Memorex DVD's BTW and product quality varies widely as you might imagine. Only 10% of the Memorex out there, those are discs manufactured by Mitsubishi in the 25 pack spindle , and they're the exception - they are the good ones. It's easy to see now why the quality of a big-named company can't be trusted - " Who's making your Memorex tonight ?"

Is it just Memorex ? No ! I just used Memorex as an example, Princo, Orange Pack, Great AZO and most "store" discs aren't all that suitable as a DVD backup media - that's why we are specific in the type of media we are recommending.

1. * Cheap media freezes, skips, pixelats and may refuse to be recognized by both burners and players :-( Besides "Freezing", "skips" many times you'll get a "Cyclic Redundancy error" or an "I/O error". This message can mean that your discs are scratched or dirty, it can also mean that your burner won't accept your "cheap" media :-(
Another problem which, "Pops up" is a "*Power Calibration Error". This can stop you right in your tracks and most often is caused by, Yep, you guessed it, inexpensive media. *A "Power Calibration Error" can also be attributed to the Optical Components of a DVD Writer, though this isn't usually the case.

Orange Pack, Princo, Great AZO and 90% of Memorex plus many others are just not that good for DVD burning. Those same discs however, are quite good for your MP3 music, picture archives, Spread sheets and Data..Even DataSafe G04's made by Ritek have been reported as an inferior quality media and are evoking that "Oh no, I shouldn't have gotten those."

What we are suggesting is to download this DVD Identifier to find out who manufactured your DVD and if it's a decent quality.

http://dvd.identifier.cdfreaks.com/

Once you have your disc identified, click the "More information" icon and see what information you're given. if you're not sure of the quality, come on back and we'll check it out for you -

2. A good grade, Hi-quality media is needed for DVD reproduction ! RiData, Phillips, Sony, "Branded" Ritek G04's or "Branded" Verbatim Data Life, Verbatim DataLife plus, Taiyo Yuden's and generally, almost any discs manufactured by Mitsubishi or RICOH are excellent bets. Among the better discs we're looking for, any media boasting "Advanced Metal AZO" - BUT it must say "METAL" AZO !, this indicates a superior dye and dye application on a good composite disc, while they are sometimes a bit "pricey" they are just the type of media we're looking for to do our DVD backups, Prices online from Meritline.com OR Newegg.com have gotten Ritek G04 starting at about a $ .45 (USD) a disc -

For DVD backups, purchasing inexpensive media or even average media is a gamble, some people win BUT the majority lose, they lose varying amounts true but, they still lose :-(

Using good grade media can guarantee you one thing to an absolute certainty; it surely cannot hurt.

In an effort to clear the air, when I speak of "Cheap" or "Inexpensive" media, I'm not referring to the price you pay at the counter - I'm referring to poor quality control used during manufacturing and the quality of the dye, dye application or composite type used. I'm not saying it won't burn - Some may burn, some may not. It's quality is inconsistent, meaning it's not dependable. To make matters worse, many times the discs that you do burn may play in your PC BUT your standalone player may not accept them - what good then is a backup DVD that cannot be watched on a DVD player ?

When I say "Branded," that means that when you pick up a disc in your hand, it says "Ritek" or "RiData" on the disc itself. The monetary cost of the media we recommend many times is cheaper than what you are purchasing now.

We like to verify our information prior to recommending things. There are certain things we look at. For instance, when their dye and dye application are listed as unknown, this almost guarantees us they are using whatever they can get at a cheap price. Companies that use quality materials like to BRAG about it, naming names and staying with quality manufacturers who produce their media.

Using DVD identifier and MediaMatch can help you find out a lot about what you're using. Purchasing your DVD media online can insure that you're getting quality merchandise at a good price. Shopping wisely will save you time, aggravation and money.

Cheers,

Pete

ScubaPete's comments don't make since to me because i use the exact same disc for the exact same movie in DVDXpress and don't have a problem, so how do you explain that. The only thing i've been able to burn with DVD Shrink is DVD-5 disc that don't have to be compressed.

When Nero make a log of your work it's at the very beginning of the log - right before it says "Win XP 5.1" (after your system components). One of the Mods (probably Neph) removed it for you. Hopefully not too many pple wrote your number down to give to friends :( Keep a lQQk out next time and don't let it get to a public forum (for your own good). In reality, it hurts no one but you . . . .

You asked for answers, I gave you answers. SINCE you didn't research the facts they don't make "SENSE." There is no substitute for knowledge.

BTW, if you would have read my post, I never said they wouldn't work, I said they were poor - PLEASE, feel free to continue to use what ever you wish. BUT don't complain when your discs show you how poor their quality control really is and backup the statements I have made and PLEASE, if you wish to criticize my information, come to the table with some facts of your own.

Lastly, I know you are well aware of all the "in's and out's of DVD Shrank and the DVD backup operation in general BUT on that far, far, outside chance that I may accidentally be right in something, you might wish to check your settings and your operation of the "Shrank" program as you call it against the DVD Shrink guides I have posted in my sig. Who knows, maybe my guide may be a "tad" better than your guide.

Regards,

PS.

That's probably because there is no earthly to use DVD Shrink on a DVD-5 backup. Most would just use DVDD, mode ISO Read then DVDD, mode ISO Write. But since you probably don't understand it - it would be a dumb idea to consider an efficient way to do it.

(In case you wish to see a guide on that too, it's in my sig. (But again, what would I know ?)

Can anyone tell me what a power calibration error means

12:12:30 PM #27 CDR -1106 File Writer.cpp, Line 304
Power calibration error

I'm getting this when I use shrink to burn
But if I just use Nero to burn a video disc it works better but still not perfect. Maybe my burner is going out

Rob,

Your wish is our command ~

The "Optimum Power Calibration"(OPC) is a 15-step test to see what speed the burner should write to your disc. The error of course is the failure of that test.

To learn more about this try this link:

http://www.dvdplusvideo.com/dvdguide001.html

While you're there, stop by "ScubaPete's" page (click "Bubbles on" on the opening page) and check the information on the proper media to use for DVD Video work which will drastically reduce further PC errors and CRC errors in the future.

Using the proper media when burning DVD's makes all the difference - it really does -

Check it out and if you still have questions, stop back and we'll help sort them out -

Pete

OK. I read scubapetes comments. I'll even buy a brand disc just to determine if this is the problem or not. However, I DID manage to get a successful burn to a TDK 4X DVD-RW. Could even watch it on my sony home entertainment system. This was after I uninstalled my existing nero software, and installed the OEM version that came with my burner. (Lite-On 1673S). So I thought I had solved the issue :)

And then I went to burn yesterday :( Same error. Again and again. I shutdown everything else that was running (Zonealarm, spybot, etcetc), but to no avail. I can wipe the DVD, but everytime I try to burn to it, "Communication Failure". I hadn't installed, uninstalled etc etc anything else since thge previous day when it actually worked :(

Would flashing the drive help? I D/l'ed the lastest thingy to flash it with, but thought I'd hold off on this since the drive was manufactured in Feb 2005, it should be reasonably up to date.

The only other copying utility I have installed it Alcohol 120%, which I may uninstall just grasping at straws....

I have attached the log of my attempt to burn this morning below(minus the key info ;) )

If people here can't help, perhaps you could suggest another site where people may be able to help?

edit - can someone suggest other burning software that I might try to get around this problem? Maybe the problem is just with nero??
Thanks.

People in this forum seem to believe that the problem is the quality of the disc and when you challenge that information they get mad, when you do what they say and it still does not work. I have tired higher quality disc and still have the same problem with DVD Shrink so good luck finding info on here about it. Scubapete catches an attitude when you try to provide more information and instead of just taken his word as gospel.I've burned successful copies with x platinum with the same style disc so i have no idea what the issues is. I'm like you i believe there is something wrong with Nero.

Well, I'm going to find out once and for all what the problem is! I've bought a new 80 wire IDe cable, and am trying to find out other DVD burning software that I can try (rather than nero).

I'm also going to see if there are any updated IDE drivers for my Mobo available.

And, as much as I doubt the media is the problem in my case, I'm going to buy another blank DVD that is a reputable brand. Ie Ritek, Mitsubishi or RICOH, phillips or sony...

sigh... oh and in response to the topic title, I'd say the reason DVD Shrink is failing is because it used Nero to do the actual burning. So at this stage, it's still only one piece of software that we are definitely having a problem with...

- no-one's getting mad, they're/we're just trying to help...
as has been mentioned above, you're using some of the worst media there is. You really need to try something better.

OK. I am burning again. Here what I tried, what didn't work and then eventually what is seeming to work.

- I uninstalled Alcohol 120% (the last of my other burning software), rebooted, didn't help.

- I bought a nice Sony blank, and now I have a nice coaster.

- I upgraded Nero to 6.6.0.8a (or something, whatever the latest was). Didn't help.

- I installed CloneDVD. Tried to burn with CloneDVD. Errored out.

- Checked out my ASPI thingy. Said it wasn't working properly (via adeptec checkaspi tool). Installed 4.72 or whatever. Didn't help. Tool still said it wasn't working properly. And I noticed I had 4.72 stuff for 2 items, and 4.60 for another 2. But then I thought that since Nero uses it's own method, it should really matter about the Adaptec one. I used Nero to see what it thought of the ASPI state of affairs and it said it was cool with it all.

- I uninstalled CloneDVD, and Nero. Then reinstalled Nero. Tried again. Didn't help. Updated to 6.6.0.8a again. Didn't help.

- I went into device manager again and had a look at my IDE stuff again. Hoping to spot something. THEN I notice that on my IDE channel, I have my CD burner and my DVD burner connected to (DVD being master, CD being slave), that the master was on DMA5, and the slave was on DMA2. So it got me thinking. maybe the CD burner is stuffing things up (slowest link kind of thing). So, I did 2 things. Made sure my IDE cable was nice and snug in the back on my DVD burner. I THOUGHT I felt it move just the tiniest bit. And I also disconnected my CD burner from the cable.

And I am now burning now worries. Did a movie to my -RW and 4 more movies to -Rs. All TDK. Which despite what I've read on here, I have never had a problem with.

Anyway, I ran out of time. I will experiment with reconnecting the CD burner and see if I can still burn. If I can, this whole think might have been because my IDE cable wasn't pushed in enough. Alternately, my DVD burner will stop working, meaning that somehow my CD burner was causing the problem. I will post back my findings in a day or 2. (Really flat out at the moment).

I hope it's not just that I didn't push the IDE cable in properly, because it should have been the first thing to check. But it's a real hassle to pull my computer desk out,m disconnect this and that, pull the case out etc etc. Anyway, I'M BURNING!!!! :d

Hey there coopers,

That's super news - you go there guy, burn on . . .! ! !

When you're feeling more relaxed, try that CD drive in another PC to see is it was 100% of the problem . . .

Many times there are a couple of factors, when you can get them all straightened out your PC will run like a raped ape :D)

@Analyzer5,

I'm really sorry you just don't get it at all . . .

Media causes a whole host of problems . . Sometimes it is the sole cause of your problem and other times it has nothing at all to do with it BUT since it is so easy to fix (by using decent stuff) it's something extremely easy to remove from the mix. All problems are different - caused by different things - the only way to make things right is to "try" eliminating those known factors that could be the cause. Why reformat your entire system (something which I hate more than root canal), take the PC apart to change cables, jumpers, positions, etc if a change in discs might just do it.
You have to be in our shoes, working for days with someone trying find a fix when just a change in media would have done it. It has happened time after time, year after year during the time I have spent here at aD.

As far as an "attitude" . . . I saw you as the one who had the "attitude." You just made a statement that your media wasn't the issue and you didn't wish to consider the possibility that it could be a factor. I've never said it wouldn't burn, of course it does BUT many times you might have ½ a sleeve that doesn't burn at all. It does burn better on some drives rather than on others BUT CMC products have a reputation of giving Power calibration errors, CRC errors, pixelations, freezing and the list goes on - all because of inferior dye and application. When sections on the disc have thin OR even gaps of dye missing, nothing works right.

Yet as usual, I ramble on . . Lol - Ya see, I know I get too "windy." Perhaps in time, when you're around here enough and see what I've seen you'll begin to get "religion". Many have. I'll even admit, it sometimes scares me - seeing how a seemingly complex problem vanishes when the media changes.

I can only hope you might pick up one piece logic to take with you - When you begin to have burning issues, use an RW disc until the problem is resolved. Consider the fact that anything could be the problem, yes, even your treasured CMC manufactured discs. Wasting disc after disc making coasters is a waste of $$$ that isn't necessary. Pickup a Sony RW disc - yes, a decent quality RW disc and use it. That way I'm happy (you're eliminating the media issue) and we can look for other things to try until we are able to get you going once again.

I probably won't change your mind about anything now BUT down the road, when experience does it's thing, you might not be so "set in your ways", refusing to listen to things that pple tell you just because you don't know enough about it -

Here's hoping we get you straightened out also so your burning experience will be a bit more pleasant.

Cheers,

Pete

My advice is get decent media, follow a
couple simple rules ie no multitasking etc
(maybe one day PC DVD burning will be a
breeze), but until then we follow these few
simple rules and many a dvd sit on the shelf
to be viewed again and again, instead of under
coffee cups as coasters!

Thanks everyone. Would there be any point flashing my firmware to JS05 if i am now burning ok? (Well, semi-ok!)

I found that my problem was my other cd burner on the same IDE cable (the slave). With it connected, I can't burn a DVD. With it disconnected, I can burn away to my hearts content....

Might try to figure out exactly WHY the CD burner is causing a problem when I have time. It has always been there as a slave, and previously I had a DVD ROM drive attached as the master. When I got my burner, I just pulled out the old DVD ROM and slipped the new burner in. Hmmm...

sounds like the jumper on the back of cd burner isn't correct.. ; changing too much at once just makes for more problems, sort the jumpers/cables out first as that sounds like your issue....
