I don't think jumpers is the problem. The cd burner was set to slave previously and everything was working fine (with my DVD ROM as Master). Swapped the DVD ROM with my new burner (set to master), and I couldn't burn. Wierd.

Anyway, I don't reall care I guess. I may as well sell my CD burner and my DVD ROM.

Just want to say I have the same problem as Cooper I unplug the CD Burner from the IDE Cable and I can burn fine I plug the cd burner in and the dvd burner will not burn. No idea what is causing this. It is not the jumpers they are set right the dvd is set to master and the burner is set to salve. If anyone has an idea shoot....cause i out of ideas.

analyzer5 - post a log for each of the 2 subsequent fails on different media, or at least the latest log. Also it would be worth removing the IDE controllers (as you're using the dreaded XP) and letting Windows reinstall them. I recall from yuor very first post/log that all 4 of your controllers stated they were set to DMA, but XP isn't very truthful about that kind of thing..

Creaky,
My lastest burns with the cd burner unpluged have not failed, so do you want a log of the last good burns? Also to uninstall the IDE Controller I would do that through the control panel correct?

The failed burn log is a the being of this forum and I forgot to save the good burn log from the last one I did if you need to see the good burn log I could burn something again and post it.

Analyzer5,

So long as your discs keep coming with mfgrs like that, you won't have issues. Just remember to tell us that you're using Ricoh OR Ritek so we can remove media from the equation -

ScubaPete,

I burned the disc with the TDK and the memorex. The problem is I can't burn any dvd with my cd burner plugged in to the ide cable i have to unplug the the cd burner to get the dvd burner to work which does not really make sense to me.

Huuuummm,

Perhaps you should try another cable - get the new round IDE cable and re-check all your jumper settings.

it sounds like you have something like a RMA conflict.

We're getting closer.

Question -

Did you say, when you have the CD burner hooked up that it works alright ?

Pete

ScubaPete,

All jumpers(dvd to master and cd to salve)are set right and i'm using a brand new ide cable i replaced it when i got this new burner(it's not round i don't know if that makes a difference).

When I have the cd Burner Hooked up the DVD Burner will not burn at all to any type of dvd media. With the cd burner disconnected from the ide cable, the dvd burner works fine.

If it is an RMA conflict how do I fix it?

The question is . . . When both drives are hooked up, does the CD drive work ?

With both drives hooked up, will the DVD drive do CD's ?

Lastly, Have you tried to run 2 IDE cables having the burners jumped to master on both drives - your HD's would be secondary on the IDE cables.

Most important
- I just re-read the entire thread -

Please check your IDE cable to make sure it's an 80 wire cable and not a 40-wire cable -
(Sorry I didn't check that before.)

Looking for ScubaPete...I am having similar problems. I have a Lite-On 16x DVD R/RW and have used DVD Shrink to shrink some DVDs. I 'shrank' one as small as I could (~ 2.4 GB) prior to running Nero Express 6. When I ran Nero Express 6, it stated that the burn process failed. I have the log below. i have run all of the Nero updates because I am using Windows XP with Service Pack 2.2. I then simply tried to burn a data disc (both times using Lite-Ons Single Layer DVDs that came with the R/W Drive) and it still failed. Any ideas? FYI. I have tried 4x, 6x, and 8x.

i'll edit my reply shortly after having looked at ya log, just wanna nudge you to cut that serial..

edits -
1/ your DMA is off....
2/ plus you're at 8x, slow it down while your DMA is off...
3/ it looks like you're using decent media
4/ your firmware - not sure if it's old or not.. i'll let someone else answer that

Hope that helps, sorry i'm rushing as need an x-files fix before my daily 05:30 wakeup :(

I'm going to try a few things when I get home.

1. Disconnecting my CD Drive.
2. DMA? What is DMA?
3. Firmware? Could it be a firmware issue and if so, what can I do?

Any help is great. Please refer to my earlier post for issue.

(Sorry I didn't check that before.) It is a 40 Wire Cable

What Difference does the 80 wire cable make over the 40 wire?

@kbroulet - nice one..

@analyser5 - couple snippets from http://www.pcguide.com/ref/hdd/if/ide/confCable80-c.html -

the new cable has 80 conductors (wires)--it does not have 80 pins on each connector, though, just 40. This means that the new cable is pin-compatible with the old drive. No change has been made to the IDE/ATA connectors, aside from the color-coding.

The extra 40 wires don't carry new information, they are just used to separate the "real" 40 signal wires, to reduce interference and other signaling problems associated with higher-speed transfers

Perhaps I worded the drive positions incorrectly.

What I had meant was on IDE cable # 1. Put your DVD burner as the master and your DC burner as the slave. On IDE cable # 2. Put your Primary HD as master and secondary HD as slave.

BOTH IDE CABLES ARE TO BE 80-wire !

To give you the short answer on the cable, Faster Data transfer, less interference.

Nice link Creaky -

@kbroulet,

You should be using Nero Burning ROM not express to burn -

I apologize that it's written in German - I was feeling a little German today (and then she slapped my face . . .)

HINT:
First, create a folder for your work on your desktop OR somewhere on your HD where you can find it again. - Name it something that you'll be able to find. I named mine C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. Now load your IFO, BUP and VOB files there - make sure they are in a folder named VIDEO_TS written like that (all in Caps) - some programs like DVD Shrink will make the properly named folder for you, others you must make the folder yourself - Nero needs that folder with all it's contents in order to work properly -

Burning a file made by DVD Shrink.
If you had used DVD Shrink to create a file on your HD you are truly in great shape. When you wish to burn, use the "File Browser" in Nero Classic (don't use Nero's Wizard), trace your path back to C:\All My DVD Work\Sleeping Beauty Kills Bill, needs Anger Management. , you don't have to remember where your work is or if you need to do anymore work on it, it is completely finished, ready to go - -

OK zen, is everyone comfy ? Goot - its now time for - -
"Uncle" ScubaPete's German, goose Step by goose Step, Let's burn with Nero 6 Guide -

First - Do not use Nero Wizard -
Please follow EXACTLY -
Vhen you open Nero Burning ROM, you vill be at zee "New Compilation" window. Directly under the title "New Compilation" is a choice block to choose either zee DVD or zee CD, choose zee "DVD". Directly under that click on zee "DVD Video Icon." Then click "New" in the upper right corner of that screen, NOT zee main screen.
You now are in zee "DVD Video" window. In zee left screen, click "VIDEO_TS". In zee "File Browser" screen, 3rd from zee left, trace your path to zee VIDEO_TS folder, zee one you made earlier holding all of your files and click on that folder. All of your VIDEO_TS files are now opened in zee right screen. Click on zee top file, hold down zee "Shift" key and then click zee bottom file thereby hi-lighting zee entire column of files. Click and (holding zee left mouse button down) drag zee entire column of files to zee open screen, second from zee left and release zee mouse button. Now click zee icon on zee task bar that shows a match on a disc, and then click "OK" and now, clear zee room, stand up tall and shout out, "Burn Baby, BURN" ! One more time, let me hear you say it, "Who's your Daddy Now ???"
Guess what my Friend ? You are done !!!

(Wheeew, now I really need a cigarette)

NOW, STAND AWAY FROM ZEE COMPUTER ! !
Keep all fingers and toes away from zee Computer. Do not fold spindle or mutilate and never mess vid zee electron box vhen it's working - it could be hazardous to your health, Commander Jason is watching -
Go and have your coffee, vhen Nero is done, zee electronic wonder box vill let you know ;-))

Enjoy your backup,

Cheers,

1.DVD burner as the master and CD burner as the slave.
2.Primary HD as master and secondary HD as slave.

ScubaPete,

Just wanted to let you know I'm now using the 80 wire cord with both the cd and dvd burner hooked up and everything is working fine. I would recommend this to anyone else that is having the same type of problem.

Hi Analyzer5,

Sorry I was so late in getting back to you -

I've spent the last 8 or 9 days in the hospital. Needed some surgery don't Ya know -

I'm glad the IDE cable worked out for you - sorry I didn't ask you sooner about it - the 80-wire makes all the difference :)

At any rate . . . I'm delighted that you've gotten everything working well ~

I wanted to remind you that you've made a few friends here so we expect to see more of you. Iffin you have the time, feel free to join us helping others. As you've seen, we try to have fun doing it and having you on this side of the table will make it even more fun :D)
I thought I'd let you know, we have other forums also ~ When you have the time, Check'em out :) There's no telling but you might find one that might be of interest to you. When in doubt, checkout the "Safety Valve", it's an almost anything goes Forum (keeping in fair to medium taste of course). We shoot the breeze about most anything that's on your mind, Events of the day, where members are from, a question someone has and is lQQking for comments on . . . .they don't always get what they're expecting (Lol), Jokes of the day - there's no telling what's there, it can get pretty wild OR check out our forums on Photography, Home Theater components, CD's, PS2's, X-box or Gamecube topics ? there's probably even something there about your cellular phone.
~ Guess you'll have to check it yourself, "Heck, you might even run into me there ~ ;P)

I'll lQQk forward to seeing you around, and you better remember to say "Hi" ~

Till then,

Sea yaaaaaaaaaaa,

Pete

Must be getting old -

I used to have the same problems. I would encode successfully with DVDShrink but the burn process would fail with Nero everytime. I tried cd burner xp pro3 and would end up with the same result, (burn process failed @18% or somewhere around there.) I recently solved this dilemna by closing out DVD43Free at the end of the encoding process when it asks you to insert a blank media. I've burned over 20 successful dvd's since then. There must be some sort of conflict between Nero 6.6 and DVD43Free. Hope this is helpful to somebody. Bob
