I find it much easier (and cheaper) to simply use DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink. Nero Recode2 really sucks.

nero recode handles compression better, than does DVD Shrink IMHO

Actually Recode2 is just awsome when you combine it with a "behind-the-scenes" ripper as Jim does. I'm not taking away anything from Shrink (My Favorite) but they only suck if they don't work. Recode2 works as advertised.

I was told that the guy that wrote DVD Shrink also wrote Nero recode2. Is this true?

Here is my opinion the whole matter. How many commercial peices of software is somebody going to have to buy to stay updated with backing up your movie? I personnally think that it's best to stick with DVD Decrypter and shrink. For one, your AnyDVD software will be outdated someday and you'll have to repurchase a whole new application.Sure DVD Shrink has made it's last release. But dvd decryptor is still continuing to update it's software.I'd rather donate to DVD Decrypter then keep buying software. This will keep updates current and then all you have to do is compress it with DVD Shrink regardless it it is the last installment because DVD Decrypter has taken care the encryption problem. You can read news update on this on www.doom9.org

i'm with hijacker on this one..

but each to their own. i'm an advocate of keeping things simple, which to me means less is more. In my humble opinion as long as there are tools that just 'do the job', then i stick with them. Especially as i'm more interested in ripping the older movies anyway. As long as decrypter keeps up with newer protections then i'm happy as i can rip some or all of the newer films as they pop up.
i'd buy AnyDVD but for decrypter being kept current

With AnyDVD you get updates for life. What makes you so sure that DVD Decrypter will stay free,or wont become obsolete?Oh btw I do donate to DVD Decrypter. But how many of you people donate to anything, if you dont have to?
If you havent tried anything but DVD Shrink, and DVD Decrypter, how do you know these other apps arent better, and or, faster?
I have a 65 inch HDTV,so most of the time, DVD Shrink is just not good enough for me,if its good enough for you then... bravo!!

i myself only use dvd shrink/decryptor, with Nero to burn, they suit my purpose so i stick with them. There are of course better programs out there that i myself haven't used (yet).
My main tv is a 20yr old 14" Sony portable, but have watched some copies on big modern widescreen with dolby etc so (for me) the quality is more than adequate.
I personally recommend the free over the paid-for, initially anyway. That way ppl can trial this software before committing to a paid-for product. If they want better that's their choice. I myself wouldn't want to be recommended something that i didn't necessarily 'need' if there was a free product i could try first and maybe find adequate.
I myself am mostly interested in the older movies anyway, so newer protections are only an issue if not catered for in the progs i use.

As i always try to post, each to their own.

Good point Jim :)

Recode2 is DVD Shrink improved version without the decryption feature. AnyDVD is a great program that once loaded in the background, every DVD is seen as "Not Encrypted" and away you go on ANY DVD movie out there and with lifetime updates as well! No need to decrypt first then encode and finally burn. Just encode and burn which is faster and easier on all your equipment as well.

Nero will be here tomorrow and the next day with updates while DVD Shrink will never have any updates. If you have used DVD Shrink then give Recode2 a try with AnyDVD in the background and see for yourself.

creaky, ive never recommended anything but DVD Decrypter and DVD Shrink to the newbies,I dont know where you got that idea.I may have mentioned AnyDVD a few times, but Ive never told anyone that it was needed.Even on this thread,I stated what I use, and didnt tell anyone, thats what they should use.
Please dont tell me how to handle newbies, because Ive been doing it for much longer than you have, in here.

Ted is right, theres nothing like using any app you want(like recode2)without having to deal with any encryptions whatsoever.

i don't doubt there is better software out there. No offense meant, no-one's telling you how to handle newbies, i certainly wasn't (I see a lot of your posts and find them very useful and informative).
I've re-read my reply a couple times and don't see any offense or anything other than me clarifying why i think what i think. Everything i said was of how "i" would advise ppl, not how you do or would do.

You seem to be implying that I do this.
If I read that wrong...then I apologize.

I have always recommended what I have been successful
with and will continue to do so. Although, I mention the freeware programs, I find that I get good quality,
ease of use and high degree of success. People spend all kinds of money for hardware but try to go cheap on DVD discs and programs.
AnyDVD and CloneDVD 2 fullfill all my needs and the cost is minimal. Lifetime upgrades of AnyDVD is like icing on the cake. In this endeavor as others, "you get what you pay for" and if you don't do due diligent research, you get what you deserve.
My 2 cents worth.

I'm having one of those problems that just sprang up out of nowhere. Everything worked fine until about a week ago.

I use DVD Decrypter to do it's thing and write all the files to my HD. Then I use DVD Shrink to do it's thing and when it gets to the point where Nero is expected to do it's burn thing, I get an error message relating to a "Reallocation Error". DVD Shrink has done it's shrink thing and written the files to the DVD Shrink folder but Nero seems unable to use them to burn a DVD.

Any body got a clue !

Creaky,

I downloaded and installed the latest version of Nero 6.6.0.8 from the Nero sight yesterday. Didn't make any difference. DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter are the latest versions available.

I know this is going to sound like a computer newbie question but I've been working with PCs for 20 years. I have never attempted to get a text listing of a folder, what command or function do I use ?

Hehe thats why creaky wants to see the directory you have your movie parked in. It seems to be missing something...

edit...

You can always just type in the listed files. I don't know how else you would do it. If you are missing .vob files .... say VTS_01_1.VOB is there, along with VTS_01_3.VOB but the one listed abovee is missing then you will get an error. Posting the files will give us a chance to sort 'em out. sometimes you can even re-name them so the sequence remains unbroken. However if you are missing other required files we can figure that out too. We just need to see what you have...
