Creaky,

Before we get any futher along, let me give you some additional background info.

I have two PCs that have the same NEC Burner and the same versions of Decrypter and Shrink. The second PC, where I'm having the problem, only has a 40 Gb hard drive and I am constantly erasing older files to make room for the newer files. I typically have 20 Gb of free space at any given time.

My main computer has 160 Gb of HD with a second 160 Gb HD for storage. I'm not having this problem on the main PC. The main PC has a Pentium 4, 2.8 Ghz processor and the second PC has a AMD 1 Ghz processor, though I don't think the processor is the problem. The AMD PC was doing the job until recently.

I don't know if this is even relavent but I had a trial version of AnyDVD installed until about a week ago. I used the remove fuction in the Control Panel to remove it from the AMD PC. I used Registry Mechanic to clean up the Regestry entries after removing AnyDVD.

Hope this additional info helps!

mufin_man - i have read that it's worth not running AnyDVD on films that don't need it, ie it can interfere sometimes;

Hogan,

Thanks for the Tip ! I doubt we will ever see another single program that does all the DVD copying functions like DVD Shrink.

The new head of the Motion Picture Association is really putting the pressure on people who duplicate digital media. The new warnings are directed at people who make copies of legally purchased DVDs. Just about every software company incourages its customers to make a backup of original installation disks.

They need to be going after the illegal dupe houses that are cranking out thousands of copies a day and stop wasting their time infringing on the rights of people who are making a single backup.

I'll get off my soapbox now!

AnyDVD with Nero recode, then theres no need for DVD Decrypter.
That's true but Decrypter is Free and the newest version will do all the movies.

I like using Decrypter because it gives me the option to rip it to my hard drive then decide which program to compress/encode with.

INSTALLED DVD43FREE AND DVD Shrink WHEN I INSTALLED NEW SONY 720A BURNER. TRIED TO INSTALL Nero AP THAT CAME WITH THE BURNER BUT MY COMPUTER WOULD NOT INSTALL DIRECT X 9 AS REQUIRED BY Nero. I HAD ROXIO BASIC ALREADY INSTALLED, SO I USED IT FOR BURNS. FANTASTIC RESULTS ON OVER 40 BURNS WITH BOTH OLDER AND MOST RECENT TITLES. I TRIED TO INSTALL SOME Nero COMPONENTS THAT MAY NOT NEED DIRCT X. THIS FOULED UP THE WORKS. DVD Shrink WOULD FREEZE DURRING RIP AT ABOUT 25% COMPLETE.
I DELETED Nero AND DVD Shrink. REINSTALLD DVD Shrink AND ALL IS WELL AGAIN. UNBEATABLE COMBINATION, ALL FREE.

Creaky,

The time ran out on the AnyDVD Trial and I honestly couldn't see any noticeable improvement in the duplication process. I'm not knocking the product, I just couldn't see any reason to purchase it; I can purchase some pretty nice software packages for $40 US.

I'm not incouraging people to solicit software illegally but the trial period went by pretty quick and it was my understanding you could reload the trial package for an extended period. I removed AnyDVD and reloaded the trial version but It said the trial was over. Removed it again, cleared out all references to AnyDVD or Slysoft in the registry, and reloaded the AnyDVD trial; it still said the trial was over.

Oh Well !

mufin_man, same problem here; i only used AnyDVD trial once or twice, then uninstalled. But unable to use it again as it still says expired even after scouring the registry and deleting all references to it. But then the latest coupls of versions of dvd decryptor have enabled me to rip some of the latest films ok;

It was like a hit on the head when someone in this thread described Nero Recode as "updated DVD Shrink". This made me take a close look at it.

I installed AnyDVD. With it running in the background Nero Recode does not recognize the movies copywrite protection. Nero Recode can use Burn At Once to copy on the fly with no problem. I viewed the movie on my 42 inch Sony LCD projection television and found the quality of the backed up DVD movie to be quite acceptable.

I plan to buy AnyDVD before the 21 day period expires. It far outshines DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter. So it costs $40. So what? I can run up a bigger bar bill in an hour or two.

DUH! I don't understand what you are saying Bilbo65. Are you suggesting that we rip AnyDVD off rather than purchase it?

Absolutely not!! This was aimed in the direction of mufin_man, et al, who complain how their trial ran out and can't reload. As I have repeatedly stated, a trial gives you a chance to try it to see if you like it or not and if you do you can buy it. I bought it after the first day I tried it. So DUH !!!!

I have not found the need for AnyDVD as of yet.
Decrypter has done every movie for me with no problems including the new releases.
I hear AnyDVD works well and a couple of my friends use it.
It all comes down to what works best for you!

I like the option of ripping to my hard drive with Decrypter, then doing the analysis with Shrink or Recode2 and depending on the compression needed I can choose which program to run it through.

Rip DVD-9 hard drive with Decrypter 10-15 mins.

Little or no Compression

I used the Anydvd TRIAL twice, then uninstalled straight away. Whenever i used it a 3rd time (must have been after the 21days) i got 'trial expired'. not unexpected as i know it's a trial. I was just trying to use it once more as i was stuck with one of the Arccos-protected films and it was taking ages to get as far as failing on the umpteenth attempt. My point was that i used it before lightning got his DVD Decrypter up to speed in last couple of releases re Arccos for instance, ie with just Decrypter i got round Res Evil 2, Grudge, Forgotten etc, WITHOUT Anydvd; so in my case, purchasing anydvd would have been unnecessary. Maybe i'll buy it later, but "i" don't yet need it. I was pleased during the trial that it worked ok.

ps Wild77 nice gif, saw that over on decryptor forum i think

I purchased AnyDVD mainly in case I need a backup for DVD Decrypter. I like the Shrink/Decrypter combo because it is easy. I have hade Nero for years, so I am glad that AnyDVD will work in conjunction with this program. I came across this thread on test run on Shrink vs. Nero Recode and this is what this member concludes.

I've been typing this post for thirty minutes, after looking at Wild77's post, my fingers keep getting stiff!

I started with DVD X Copy a couple of years ago. After the company fought the movie studios and legal system and lost, I started looking around for another App that would replace X Copy.

I found DVD Shrink and I thought I had died and gone to Heaven. It didn't have that stupid Warning Screen plugged in at the first and it was a freebee. I would have gladly paid for this App at that time.

Then no more updates, the Shrink author realized the fruits of his labor and got a sweet job with a major software company. Great move for him, major loss for us.

Then the new encoding scheme and Shrink needed an extra support leg and another step added to a process that was previously automated. Lots of options to choose from that will provide that support leg, some are even free.

Never say never, I very well may purchase AnyDVD, or a future latest and greatest App, when technology bypasses the current software that's available. It's getting to the point that I can almost wait and pick up the real thing from a sale table at the video store for what it's costing me to keep up with technology. But it's so much fun to beat the system!

I will always love DVD Shrink, as of yesterday I finally learned how to use DVD Decrypter for those few movies that DVD Shrink just won't open. I've burned almost 100 movies with DVD Shrink, and I have a 28 inch tv and they are perfect,...menus and all, just like the real deal...wev'e also used them on a 58 inch televsion widescreen...no difference. I really like the non-complexities of DVD Shrink..its simple, easy & fast. Of course when I decide to go HD then I may have to actually buy a burning program, but as of now I see no major difference in having Nero(which I do) and I never use because DVD Shrink already does everything. I'd rather deal with one program then have to use 2 or 3 to burn one movie.I never realized when I started this thread that I would get so much information. I thank you all.
