I was using dvdshrink and nero for some with no problems at all. Then I was unable to write to dvd-r media. I thought it was a problem with shrink/nero compatibility but other dvd burn applications produce write errors too even with data. The secondary IDE channel device 0 (DVD drive) went from DMA to PIO transfer so I uninstalled the devices DVD, IDE and nero. Now I have DMA transfer (Ultra DMA Mode 2) but still no luck. I have tried DVD+R media of a different brand and still errors. The media shouldn't be the problem because it was working 100% for many months. Also DVD+R will not allow simulation under nero, DVD-R is ok. DVD-RW appears to burn ok. CD's burn ok.

here is the nero log for DVD-R media:

========== END OF LOG ==========

Why all of a sudden can't I write to DVD-R or DVD+R media?
Lickily I can simulate using DVD-R media and not have to keep throwing discs in the bin.
My drive does not support X1
I have tried X2 and X4 with no luck.
I have tried to update the DVD drive firmware but it says it's the latest already.

Can anyone help?

Can you check your ASPI files to see if they're corrupt? With Nero, it's the last tab in InfoTools. Reinstall them using ForceASPI. Otherwise, you could try using XP's Restore feature to go back to a date before you had all these problems. BTW, use Rewritables until you figure out the problem.

this is what i've found on on your media so far, it wouldn't appear to be very good quality - http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

Nero info tool shows System ASPI not installed.
it also indicates Nero ASPI WNASPI32.DLL 2.0.1.74 October 26, 2004 installed and working properly.
I will look into ForceASPI. and get back to you guys.
Thanks for the help ... greatly appreciated.

koalatech ,
Since you are using XP you do not need ASPI as Windows utilizes SPTI. Besides Nero has the ASPI layer there already for you. I have no ASPI layer on my computer except for Nero and have never had a problem.
The Log shows a "Medium error" so use a better grade of Blank media and do as was suggested and use RW's until you get it solved.
The reason you went into PIO as when Windows gets 6 errors it drops the DMA down 1 notch. It goes from DMA 2 >DMA1>PIO4.and then all the way down to PIO 1. More than likely it is a registry conflict that is causing the DMA problems. You might Google for a free registry cleaner and then Clean out your registry of any conflicting files

I don't suspect the media because I had 100% reliability until a few months ago. I bought good quality dvd+R media just to test and used low write speed X2 and X4 but Nero and NTI are 100% failing. I recently installed CDBurnerXp Pro 3.0. I managed to get it to work on DVD+R media for 3 burns out of about 30 attempts(DVD-R still failed 100%). CDburnerXP doesn't detect a failure when the disc is not written to in my case. In fact it thinks the process was successful. e.g. select write to disc and about 2 seconds later it says burn was successful. One good thing I can keep using the disc because it is still blank. I better go through the registry as suggested. I restored the system back to a restore point prior to the problem but Nero had all kinds of errors. Nero and NTI programs "hang up" and stop responding when burning DVD-R +R. After a period of time they respond and at that point they report "media error". I would expect a real media error just to fail the process and not hang the programs. I suspect DVD-R and +R is causing the drive to stop talking for some reason.

- if only this was the case. One of the frustrations with DVD burning can be that a burn may well appear to burn successfully, yet upon playback you experience freezing/skipping or other problems. This is usually due to crappy media - what we found you were using with your original log. The fact that you had success with crappy media before unfortunately does not guarantee they will always work for you. The only thing for sure is that crappy media is still crappy media. Maybe one day DVD burning will be as good as CD burning ie any crappy old CD seems to work these days, but that's just not the case with DVDs for most ppl.
Now you say you've used better media since then, it would be good to post that section of log. However it could be a genuine hardware problem, but post your log

Same issue. Brand new machine, not more than two days old with the same error. Thought it was the new Pioneer drive. Then was at my parents place yesterday and my old man told me he just started having problems, and it was also the same error.

We both use different media, different burners (his is a Sony), different OS's (I am XP, his is 2000). The only thing in common is the same versions of Nero and DVDShrink.

Downgraded Nero to older versions on his machine, no luck. Tried a few more dvd's, was able to get one to work. The one that did work didn't need to be recompressed.

Any ideas? Havn't checked ASPI drivers or anything yet.

@y2005, go thru the above steps , then post you log minus serial number (sorry if you already know this!), and let us know what media you're using, though that'll be in the Nero log, as will firmware blah blah blah !!

Has anyone figure out how to resolve this?? I also have been able to burn to my DVD+R since 04DEC till 2 days ago. Now I can burn the files to DVD+RW and not DVD-R. Tried two different brand of DVD+R. My error messages are slightly different:

Appreciate your assistance! How do I go about doing this? I am not that technical.
Questions:
1. Why is this an issue all of a sudden?
2. After I used Shrink 3.2 to backup the DVD files, it automicaly burn the files to the new DVD. Since I am having so much problem, after I Backup the files and save it to C: drive, how do I burn these files to DVD later on?!! Looked thru all the tabs and unable to figure out how to do it.

Bought some Sony DVD yesterday from Sam's, after burning similar error message displayed. However, the DVD plays fine?!!

After receiving the error message or a movie I have saved on my C:drive, I really like to find out how to burn another DVD without having to do the Backup again in order for Nero to open for burning?? I have looked thru Nero and tried couple of times to burn it from the application without success. I do not intend to edit or create my own movies, just enough to burn movies or TV shows to DVD.

Any chance Shrink3.2 is bad?

koalatech:

Press: ctrl+alt+delete (at the same time), take note of the applications that are running at the background and the number of processes(just the number) and write back.

Sorry for the delay.

I bought a new DVD burner. Its an LG GSA-4163B I installed it into a Vantec Nexstar 2 5.25" IDE/USB/Firewire enclosure. Currently I'm using USB 2 interface.

I am using the same programs and media etc and the new drive works 100%, not a single failure and I have burned about a dozen discs so far.

The internal drive is also an LG but an older model GWA-4040N. I am really starting to suspect I have a faulty Drive unit. I have made inquiries about the firmware but there doesn't appear to be any newer firmware updates for that model (this in itself could be a problem).

A friend told me he had exactly the same problem. He too could read all media and burn DVD-RW but not - or + R. He had the drive replaced and it fixed the problem.

I noticed my2222 is using a GCA-4040N.
I didn't do any research, but I wonder if the 4040N (GCA and GWA) have reliability/compatability issues.

I guess time will tell to see how reliable my new drive is. The only problem using an external USB burner, is that it's slower than an internal one on the IDE bus. What I do is read on the 4040N and burn on the 4163B if I need to copy discs.

I think my drive is going out. I don't think the compability is the issue for I have burned at least 150 DVDs from Nov04 to several weeks ago.

One of my friend suggested I go buy the DVD cleaner. The first time I cleaned it there was a white ring formed around the brushes. I cleaned it one more time, burned a DVD, got the error, however, I had a partial burn. Part of the program came up.

Seems more of the hardware issues?!!!!

@jfb130 - you'll need to give us a lot more than that to go on. Go thru the thread and post the same sort of info/system info/log info as above...

Cleaning the DVD drive worked!!! Well, at least burning on Sony media and not the Fry's on sale DVDs. The Staple DVD cleaner did not work well, had a difficult time to get it to 'play'/clean continuously. So I went and bought a Scotch/3M DVD cleaner and cleaned the drive 5 times in a row and now I have NO problem burning on the Sony DVDs.

Maybe if I clean the DVD drive better maybe the drive will be able to read the cheaper DVD like it was several weeks ago.

I like to hear your opinion on this...
Several weeks ago I was starting to have issue burning movies again. Even after cleaning the DVD drive several times. I told my friend and he told me it maybe the time to get a new drive.

I finally called Compaq (I rather suffer than to have to call tech support; as they usually read out the directions from a book anyway). 'Josh' from India had me uninstall the DVD drives, turn on and off the notebook. Since I was able to play a DVD movie, 'Josh'told me is the application(Nero) issue, and I should use Sonic or WinDVD that were included with the purchase. He was not able to walk me through using WinDVD, so he told me to use Nero. Of which I was able to burn the two movies I have tried to burn several times before this call, and on the cheap DVDs.

To make a long story short I then was able to rip and burnt two more movies, before it stopped ripping the third one. I repeated the process of uninstalling and reinstalling the drive, I was again able to rip and burn three more movies?!!!!

@my2222 - post Latest section of logfile... it's always possible that the drive's playing up, but first we should check settings like before, and check for crap media again. the whole point with crap media is it's inconsistent
