Godzilla, burning at a slow speed is very important! It sounds like to me that your GTA ia just a bad burn. The reason behind rebuilding games is probably half anomoly and half pirate protection. I think that half the developers care that games are being copied. Companies like EA (penny pinching bastards) are always finding new ways to deter us from burning-just look at how many people have problems with EA sports titles. Rebuilding is just basically a way to get around their copy protection whether it be intentional or not. I would say that only about 3% of PS2 games have to be rebuilt. Like I said earlier though (unless it is a sports game *who honestly cares about the next Madden?*) I haven't run into a game yet that can't be copied except GT4. I would also imagine that most developers will stop caring about this practice soon enough with the release of the PS3 right around the corner. So as far as the problem goes, I don't think that it will get much bigger.

I am having problem with sonic heroes, I use DVD Decrypter I found it has a dummy file so I replaced with 1 kb dummy file when I rebuilt. I used cd/dvdgen and got 3 star files I used cmd in dos and merged the three but the iso created only 35 meg disk. I open the file and all files are there in their correct sizes? But the disk doesn't boot. Use swap disk 3.3 and it loads to blank screen. Help! This is only game have had problems with so far. Using maxell dvd-r burn 1x with decrypter.

DVD Decrypter
http://www.afterdawn.com/software/dawnload.cfm?mirror=0&software_id=298

Use Quality Media I use
Verbatim dvd+r

***** BURN AT NO MORE THAN 2X****** <-----------(IMPORTANT)
TURN OFF ANY BACKGROUND APPLICATIONS

1. Take the ps2 game put it in the dvd rom or dvd burner, your choice.

2. open the dvd decryptor program then go to to tool bar and hit MODE>ISO>READ. Then choose the correct dvd drive that the game is in as the "source". Also choose where you want the files to be stored on the pc hdd. THEN CLICK DECRYPT , or the huge graphical picture at the bottom of the program which makes it run. The game is now copying to your HDD. Take the game out when finished (it might take a while).

3. Go to the same tab in dvd decryptor and choose MODE>ISO>WRITE. This will then let you look for the files you just created in step 2. Select the file that you just created. (There is only 2 files created so pick the .mds) (The smaller file)Then click WRITE, make sure there is blank DVD in the drive.

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

The following list is in preference order.
Almost flawless burns with 95-100% reliable results:

MXLRG01, MXLRG02 = Maxell = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
MCC = Mitsubishi Chemicals = (-R)<-----------------VERBATIM MY CHOICE #1
TDKG02 = TDK Corp = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes
TAIYOYUDEN or YUDEN = Taiyo Yuden = (-R)<--------------FUJIFILM (made in japan) MY CHOICE #2

Decent discs, though not perfect, about 85-95%
success rate:

RICOHJPN = Ritek or Ricoh = (+R)
SONYD04 = Sony = (-R) ... be aware of unbranded fakes

Yeah, I know how to do that but then it wont play on my PS2.
I am wondering if there is a way to burn the dvd so that it doesnt need swap magic or a modchip or anything that costs a lot of money.

PS2 games are actually pressed DVD/CD discs, they are not burned. PS2 games use the Burst Cutting Area (BCA) of the disc to identify themselves to the PS2 unit. The BCA is not part of a disc that you can burn on, it is only replicated on pressed discs.

So, the only way to play backups is to get boot-discs or a mod-chip.

If it was possible we all would NOT be using modchips or boot disks.
If money is the issue swap magic and a fliptop/tool is the way to go.
But your not gonna find any other ways to do it.

Hursty and Danbooke,

Seems like you 2 are ahead of everyone on this thread here, so here's my simple question. How do you rebuild a back up game such as GOW? I'm trying to understand, but is there any special procedures required other than "Nero and Decrypter"? Your help is "GREATLY" appreciated. Thanks.

supra8805,

I have a basic question for you in regards to GT4. I'm pretty much experienced on backing up DVDs and recently PS2 games, somewhat I hope this can't be too hard, especially, once an individual (YES...that person is you, a genius) cracked the method of burning already then it's a sweet like candy.

Now, I have a Sony DRU 710 DL DVD Burner/Writer, "Nero 6 Ultra Edition (latest version,) DVD Shrink and DVD Decrypter (both latest version"). However, I'm trying to understand the part when you said; "the patch for dual layer games (ultimate patch) get it here http://www.ps2hd.com/forums/downloads.php?do=file&id=105." What exactly do you mean, can you please give more detail i.e. is the "ULTIMATE PATCH" for the DVD Burner to burn DL media, or is the patch for the PS2 console to enable to play DL backed up PS2 game? Your help and contribute is "greatly" appreciated. Thanks in advance.

hi alkohol

only use DVD Decrypter not Nero and DVD Shrink for this one. The patch that i gave u a link 2 is required to play dual layer disc on the ps2 the way the patch works is once you have gone into DVD Decrypter and choose iso - read and then decrypted the game before you go the iso - write you need to open up the patch and click the ... then locate the game (the .iso file only dont patch the .mds file) c:/GT4.iso is the default location for DVD Decrypter then click go it should say the patch is succesful then go into DVD Decrypter and select iso - write and burn the game. I burnt at 2.4x on a verbatim +r dl disc and it should work fine...

if you need anymore help just send me a private message...

Danbooke,
How did you manage to copy Kessen 3 from DVD9 to DVD5. I have tried EVERYTHING that I could find, including Sonix's tools. I don't think rebuild/relink works with this one. Also, the .PSS movies are written BACKWARDS (sound first, then video... or so says Sonix), so no luck with the downsampling. With a personal back-up collection of over 75 titles, including Mercenaries, God of War (props to Sonix), Metal Gear Solid: Substance (4 coasters, that B*tch), The Guy Game, and Blood Rayne 2... I hate it that this game stumps me! Please help a fellow collector out. Thanx

Supra8805,

Before I take any actions on backing up with the "patch" you provided above, I just need to know if this is mainly for "DMS" PS2 mod chip only? Or will it work with any other PS2 mod i.e. Swap Magic 3.6 Plus with Flip Top, Slide Tool, etc. too? I have a PS2 version 9 with Flip Top and Swap Magic 3.6 Plus mod. In addition, my PS2 can easily read/play any -R/+R and DL media -- I've burned/backed up "House Of Flying Daggers and xXx: special edition" both on VERBATIM DVD+R DL 2.4X just "to test" on my PS2 and see if it it's compatible [will read/play it,] and YES... it's playing like a charm from start to end. However, I haven't tried DL media on PS2 games before. Therefore, I was just being curious due to the fact that I've heard that "Swap Magic 3.6 Plus" will NOT boot DL media that's all. Has anyone actually tried to boot a DL media with the new Swap Magic to see if it failed or a success? I'm sorry for asking so much, but evidently, I'm new to this back up PS2 games, so please correct me if I'm wrong. Like I said earlier on my previous post, I have a Sony Dual Layer DVD Burner, DVD Decrypter & DVD Shrink (both are the latest version), and already 3 packs of 2.4X VERBATIM DVD+R DL media ready to go on hand.

Your help is "GREATLY" appreciated.
