Has anyone experienced longer wait to backup movies with DVD Shrink lately? I used to be able to back up a movie in under 45 minutes, and now it takes well over an hour. Also, when I insert the movie and Shrink begins to analyze it, it used to take less than a minute to process, but now it takes anywhere from 2-10 minutes. My burn speed is still the same, but just shrinking the movies are really taking alot longer. Is there anything I can do to speed up the process? Thanks.

try a defrag, sometimes that helps. The encode time depends on your system specs, the compression required, and whether or not you use quality enhancements. If you started using quality enhancements or upgraded any hardware on your system you'd know, so keep an eye on the compression, the more you need the longer it will take. I'd check for spyware, adware, and viruses also.

Sounds like you went from DMA to PIO mode. 45 minutes is rather long.
A faster processor and more memory will help. Shrink runs from 6 to 16 minutes for me depending on compression.

Good Luck

What is DMA & PIO mode, and how do I change that. I have messed with the settings on Shrink trying to find anything to help me speed it up. Yesterday I tried to back up a copy of Sex and the city, and it was taking over an hour just to analyze it. I tried un-installing and re-installing it, but still very slow. This is my current system:
HP Pavillion
2.8 AMD processor
512 mb ram
80 gb HD

No videogames, only use internet, and only download music.

DMA is Direct memory access and it's much faster than PIO (parallel i/o) because it basically bypasses the CPU. Check the bbmayo link in my sig to find out how to get back to DMA.

thanks for your assistance, I was able to change to DMA, and shrink improved dramatically.l I have no clue how this setting got changed, but at least if I have trouble again, this is the first thing I will check.

I had it change to PIO mode once.
I was using a DVD/CD-RW combo unit.
It happened when I burned a CD with it.
It's always a good idea to remember what you did last.

Im assuming your running winblows XP its kinda flawed, after 5 errors not sure if it's write or read errors XP will default to PIO mode.

Hi, I am having the same problem with shrink taking a very long time, 1 hour and 50 minutes. I followed the directions to change from PIO mode to DMA. When I reboot and recheck it says PIO only and PIO mode. I tryed it again and the same thing happened. That is for the secondary ide channel. The primary says DMA ultra. I am defraging right now. Anything else I should do?
Thanks

so you can't get to DMA on your secondary channel? Maybe you can change a setting in your BIOS to enable DMA.

BTW, how much compression are you using in DVD Shrink?
Are you using quality enhancements?
What's your CPU speed?
How much RAM do you have?

All of these factors will also affect the encode speed.

"nailedny": uninstall the secondary ide channel (usually is the channel where the dvd drive is attached to), reboot your computer and check if DMA was enabled:

LeRobert,
I followed that guide from another forum and I am still in pio mode. I did defrag and used shink for 4 backups which changed my time to about 20 minutes a dvd. I am thrilled with that.

Squizzle,
I don't know how to get to bios, Not sure about the compression and and quality enhancements in shrink, I followed scubapetes instructions and settings. I do know the memory is 512 and my computer is a Pentium 4.
Anything else?
Thanks

to get to BIOS restart your computer and before Windows loads up hit either F2 or Delete, usually delete. That should take you into the setup screen. Don't change anything except if you find something that says "Enable DMA" or something to that effect.

I DID IT!!! HORRAY!!! I followed the bbmayos guide. I wasn't deleting the primary channel just the secondary one. When I did both they both rebooted in dma mode.
Thanks to all of you for your help once again.
