it says this:

DVD shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.

Copy protection error

The request could not be performed because of an I/O device error.

what does this mean and why cant i use my dell to shrink movies?

Shrink does not handle some of the newer protections on some more recent movies too well.

Use latest version of DVD Decrypter to rip movies and then DVD Shrink to compress.

its not the movie cuz i already shrank it. i was just testing it out to see how much faster it wasthan my other p3 1ghz notebook. good idea, it gives me something else to try in the future.

I ran into that problem once and I had to go into settings and uncheck the box that says "Enable burning with Nero." Weird...
