I just started so bear with me.

I copied with Decrypter, then used Shrink and burned with Nero for the first time last night.
Talked with a friend and he said I don't need Shrink, he said the Nero has a function that autmatically "adjusts" the DVD so that it will fit on a DVD5. (Which I have not been able to figure out how to do yet)

Which is better
Using the 3 step process
or skipping Shrink and letting Nero do the work?

The application in Nero that will do this is Recode2, it is very similiar to to Shrink. Some people say it is better for backing up, however it cannot read copyrighted DVD's so you still must use DVD Decrypter. DVD Shrink is free Nero is not. You can do a one step process if you use purchased program AnyDVD to break the encryption and then Recode2 will work as one step process. This guide explains process

On about 90-95% of my backups, I just rip it with DVD Shrink and auto-burn with Nero. I only use DVD Decrypter on the newer encryptions and on my single drive spare pc when I want to re-rip my backups.

One advantage of Nero Recode 2 - yes there are drawbacks to - is that it's faster than DVD Shrink.

I always rip with Decrypter, as I've found it faster on ripping than using Shrink, and it seems to work on more discs. I've had some problems ripping with Shrink on either damaged or copy-protected discs.

Just recently, I switched over to encoding with Nero from Shrink. My friend kept on hyping the program so much, I had to give it a try.

It's not too bad, I really like the much faster encode speed, but it really does have downsides as well. The Recode software is still buggy. Sometimes enabling/disabling titles doesn't work right. Disabling a title to a custom picture or slide show doesn't seem to save as much space as Shrink, either.

This friend of mine says that Recode is also more likely to work on certain movies. I had problems encoding Bourne Supremacy with Shrink, but he encoded with no problems using Recode.

Anyone else out there have opinions on this?

I used Decrypter and Shrink for Bourne Supremacy and had no problem, I use Recode2 most of the time now because it is faster than Shrink. I use AnyDVD in conjunction with Recode and it works great usually with the 2 pass and have not had one coaster and quality is very good. My two cents :~)
