I have a couple questions about backing up some dvd's that I currently own. I'm new at this and just learning. But I have a DVD+R burner, and using TDK +R dvd's. I started out using DVD SHrink and was able to backup 4 or 5 movies some of which are dual layered dvds. But a few of the dvd's i backed up went through the whole process successfully, yet when i play them on my standalone dvd player, it was unable to read it. I then tried using dvd decrypter file mode to decrypt, and then loaded it into dvd shrink to edit and burn using nero and I received the same results on my dvd player, it was unable to read it. I then used dvd decrypter ISO mode to read it, then loaded the ISO file in dvd shrink, shrunk the movie so it would fit on regular dvd, then burned it in dvd shrink using nero just like i did the other times. And low and behold, my dvd player was now able to read the dvd. My question is, why would dvd shrink not error or anything, but not play on the dvd player, and why did it work with DVD Decrypter ISO mode and not dvd decrypter file mode?? Any thoughts would be greatly appreciated.

did you use the DVDShrink deep analysis option?

I'm not to sure, about your media 'discs' also DVD-R is more flexible, with half compatable formats.

more info is required,

regards gringle.

Yes, I did use the deep analyssis option. And my dvd burner that came with my computer is a DVD+R, it won't even read a dvd-R media.

I'm still a little confused. Does anyone have any idea why some movies that I backup using decrypter and DVD Shrink will play on my dvd player, and some movies that i backup using decrypter and DVD Shrink will not play on my dvd player? I'm using the exact same media (TDK DVD+R 8x) each time. I havd a DVD+R internal dvd-ram drive (GSA-4040b) in my gateway computer. I'm attempting to play the dvd's on a JVC XV-S45 standalone dvd player. I'm tempted to buy a newer dvd player, but i'm not sure if that will solve the problem since some of the ones i burned do actually play. The ones that do not play on the standalone will play on my pc, and they do backup without any errors. Any thoughts or advice would be GREATLY appreciated.

Encode and or compressed with Shrink, then burn with DVD Decrypter. This is by far the most successful method I've acknowledged.

hi

odd? i always use iso unless i need file for something specific?

so lets take stock here? apps are good computer is good? maybe disc media are inconsistant grades??

tell me, the movies that dont play! what are they doing for errors? would they be the dvd9 shrunk ones?

as dvd shrink has a very hard job to get output size correct on heavy compresion films like dvd9, unless deep analysis is used...

in cases like this some media not all can cope if you back off the output size rom 4460 to 4300 in shrink settings...

also i would always output from shrink to dvd decrypter to burn...

Nothing here to see, move along folks.

Ok, last night one of the movies that i couldn't backup on two previous attempts finally worked. But it worked using a Memorex DVD-R instead of my TDK +R media. I'm going to try the other ones that didn't work tonight with DVD-R instead of DVD+R media and see if it stays consistent. Still doesn't make sense to me though why some of the DVD+R's will play and some won't play on my dvd player.
Someone earlier suggested burning with DVD Decrypter instead of Nero, is there any reason why? What i usually do now is use decrypter first in ISO Read mode. Then i open up DVD Shrink, do a CTRL-I and select the ISO file, then i shrink the movie to fit on a DVD5, and then i burn it inside of DVD Shrink but it uses Nero to do that. I've seen the option to create another ISO Image and burn with decrypter but never actually tried it that way. Is there any real advantage??

dude you don't even need Nero, use DVD Shrink with option to burn using DVD Decrypter, if you have a problem use decrypter to rip and burn as it can handle some copy protection that shrink can't. The media you use is important also sometimes the quality grading is inconsistent from one disc to another but I mostly use memorex or kypermedia and have never had a problem when I switch to something on sale sometimes I have problems. I prefer using dvd+ but I also have a cyberhome dvd player with multiformat compatiblility unlike some more expensive players. Good luck to you....

One thing to keep an eye on is the burn speed. A DVD video has a lot of HQ info and should be burned at a slower speed. And the media type just like the guys have already stated is very important. A good brand that I have found that is low cost is from Office Depot, their brand well actually it has their name on it but it is made by Ritek. They work good, I have used over two hundred and not one coaster.

I've burned dvds for awhile using DVD Shrink but had problems after I had to delete and reinstall it. After I Open Files and then Back Up, it backs up the files but when its complete, it says Back Up finished succesfully and doesn't eject and tell me to insert a blank one to copy the files... any suggestions on how to fix that

I had that problem at first.
If you press 'Edit'/'Preferences'/'File I/O' there is the option for 'Nero Burning'.
Perhaps that's all it is.

Should the box be clicked to Enable Nero burning or unclicked so that the box is empty? Thanks for your help.

The box should be checked. The link shows a good guide for Shrink which includes all the settings.

i think it's time to rewind a bit, this thread is getting confusing real quick. I see two issues here -

Fistly is determining what burner you have so we can clear up what formats your drive really supports (ie - or + or both).
Secondly you mentioned the 'M' word, Memorex, the bane of all things media related

let's try something -

download Nero info-tool from here - http://www.snapfiles.com/get/neroinfo.html

Run it, click on the drive tab, note down the name of the drive from top left of info-tool, plus the firmware version too from right hand side. Paste results here. Here's what mine shows -

Then, download dvdinfopro (free) and run one of those Memorex thru it's media info check, pasting the reults here.

Then have a look at the 2nd link in my signature re Memorex while we digest the results...

I ran into similar troubles with compat issues +R -R etc. Here is a great link for checking your DVD player compat specs and to see what format it supports. On this link your JVC player generally supports -R recordings. Not +R... Hope this sheds some light for you. You can also use the link to see all the listings for all players and what they use. (Ex. +R -R)...

Good Luck!

Oh by the way. Here's what I use at home. You can see that it supports many formats and this is a inexpensive player also.
