Welcome!
First thing you'll need to do is some reading. First link is the forum rules - you should edit your post & remove your email address. Second link has alot of info you will need to start burning. The guides are good and will help explain the process to you using Shrink and Decrypter.

may i also recommend using some decent media for your backups when time comes...go with either Taiyo Yuden or Verbatim blank dvds to avoid headaches in the near future with cheap media~ mind you this is of course once you get the software down, i just don't want you running into all the problems others have by using really bad media and finding out a few months down the road that your backups don't play anymore and you will have to do the process ALL over again~ :)

good luck, that is just my 2cents to diminish the chance of problems later in the future~

Recommended Media:

Taiyo Yuden 4x dvd-r TYGO1/ 8x dvd-r TYGO2/ 8x dvd+r YUDEN000T02/ 16x dvd+r YUDEN000T03
Verbatim 8x dvd+r MCC003
Verbatim dvd+r DL (MKM001)= flawless no compression backups

when i back up my dvd's using Nero after the shrink program process will it still be playable on my regular dvd player. even if i modify the dvd by deleting the menu's and all that and just place the media files on the backup dvd

It should be playable on your standalone. ReArthoring won't affect the play back but the type of disc used may. Example: +R may not be recognized by older DVD players - if you have a newer dvd player that may not be a problem. Also poor quality media as kivory666 stated can cause problems (skipping, freezing etc).
What media need you use?

i just ordered 100 verbatim dvd +r from newegg, after $30 rebate it was about $26.99, free shipping.
seems like a good deal, i'm just hoping they aren't made in taiwan.

from what i can gather, it seems like the best media is made in japan and singapore.
read the label and check where the dvd was made.
i just picked up some dvd +rw made in japan, sony, and my new lite on had no problems with it. i was worried because the only dvd i had was tdks, which were working fine in my laptop, but all attempts in desktop came out crappy.

@jer2911tx - had posted some Verbatim info to that other thread you were involved in last night - re Verbatim -

http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/1/191595#1026610

and found another one re Taiwan, from http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/173314 -

a response from Verbatim. Well here it is from the office in the US:

Dear Ron -

Sorry for the late reply. Somehow your correspondence was submitted to our Australian office.

To answer your question, there is no quality difference between our discs made in Singapore and the ones made in Taiwan. In fact, our Singapore facility is only making double layer media at this time, so any "made in Singapore" stock that you find must be fairly old.

We follow some of the Internet chat room stuff. Some true, some not. What you find are large assumptions based on very little data. We take DVD quality very serious at Verbatim - our name and reputation are very important to us, and key to our leadership position.
Thank you for being a loyal Verbatim customer.

Best regards,
Tim Clatterbuck

i picked up my verbatims last night.
was down to about 3 tdk 8x left.
i did a deep quality burn on the desktop, mainly to see if the burner had a problem with the verbs and to see how long it would take.
i think it took over 4 hours, i started at midnight and woke up around 4:30am and it was 10 minutes from finishing, so i stayed up to check it out.
i played the deep quality copy of star wars 5, wanted to check the sound and see if i could tell a difference in the pic quality. i was pretty scared, the playback was choppy, would kinda freeze up every couple of seconds on playback. i took it out of the lite on burner and played it on a regular dvd player and it played fine on tv, no choppy scenes where it was choppy on the liteon.
i used decrypter to bookmark the dvd +r as rom, too, so i'm hoping my burns will play in my dvd players.

i need to check and see if the hitachi burner in my laptop can be set to change the bookmark to dvd rom
