ok guys here it is. I have been using shrink dvd for a couple of years with my sony dvdrw-30drua and I used copy dvd to burn it. Lately I have been using shrink 3.2 and burning it with nero since it is all just a one button click, and it is nice when it works. I never thought I would be posting this thread until recently I purchased a new sony dvdrw-dru720a could write faster at 8x instead of 4x like my old sony. Every since I installed my new sony everything goes fine up to the burning stage and then I receive an error saying illegal disc. My brother has the same kind of burner and is using the same type of -r media that I have and he has no problem at all. I have tried just about everything that I know to resolve this issue to no avail. I am not real computer savy so if this is a difficult fix please post the solution anyways and I will have my nephew decifer it for me. I can still use shrink 3.2 with my old sony and it works fine but it absolutely will not work with my new sony. I just do not understand how my brother can have exactly the same burner and media that I have and it works were as mine does not. I can run the image file thru dvd decrypter before shrinking it and then I can burn it but I never had to do this before, only with a few dvds that had a special encryption. It acts like they installed something in the burner to see the copyright protection after shrink is thru with it but I really do not know. Can someone please give me a hand with this NIGHTMARE!!!!!!!!!!!!! I just wanted to add that after I made the first copy with shrink 3.2 with my old sony burner that I could also make extra copies using copy dvd, so I thought I would try using this to burn a movie after shrink was thru and it errors just like the nero does. My old sony will burn with copy dyd just like before, but just like shrink 3.2 my new burner will not make copies with copy dvd either. I sure would apprecitate someones input on this so I can resolve this issue. Oh yes I almost forgot to say that I also updated my nero software and tried it again and still am having the same probelm. Thanks in advance, Don

Recomendation:

Update the firmware of your new sony dvd writer, go to this page:

http://sony.storagesupport.com/dvdrw/dru720adwn.htm

............. now try to burn a new copy........ did it work?

Check the compatibility of your operative system with your version of Nero, check this page:

http://ww2.nero.com/us/Support_News_Service_Pack_2_Inquiries.html

if it is not compatible, update it.

if it is compatible, uninstall Nero, and install it back, there is some special tool to do it that you can find in the Nero web page:

http://ww2.nero.com/us/General_Clean_Tool.html

here to get the tool:

ftp://ftp9.nero.com/attach/General-CleanTool.zip (copy and paste)

............. are you sure that you are using a good quality dvd media?

.......... good luck.

ok just for the sake of it I updated my firmware and to no avail. I have also removed nero and reinstalled it. If this was the problem then why does my old dvd burner still operate fine with shrink and copy dvd. I also stated that my brother is using the same sony model that I am using and it has the same month and year of manufacturing on it also. He is also using the exact same media that I am using. Everything that I am using with my set up he is using with his, including the media. I have been using this media for several years now and never had a problem with it before. If this was a windows issue with nero and my sony then again why would my old sony which I still have in my computer operate fine with these programs. I just do not understand why it will not work! Oh yes I am not using service pak 2 I only have service pak 1. Had to many conflicts with service pak 2 so went back to service pak 1.

OK, how about the configuration setting for your burners.

Are they set as master and slave in proper sequence? Also many brand name computers dont even have this setup, they use Cable select (CSEL). Be sure your jumpers are set right.

Also almost all newer burners require an 80 pin connector, where as the older models only require 40 pins.

There must be a difference between the two systems that is being overlooked.

Try to burn a dvd with a program other than Nero.

Did it work?............ fine: the problem is then associated with Nero y/o DVD Shrink.

Did not work?

Then consider the posibility of a defective drive:

this tool could help you to determine if the drive is defective:

ok I do not disagree about there being something different but everything you metioned is in check. Hard drive is primary, CD writter is primary slave, New sony is secondary master, and old sony is secondary slave, and yes all jumpers are set accordingly. This is a home made computer so it has a few extras. The new sony is also only 40 pin just like the old. I checked just to say I did. Now does anyone else have a clue on what in the world the problem can be with this situation?

Check if you can burn a dvd with other program.

Check if you dvd drive is operating correctly .......... go to Sony web page and download de "DriveCheck" tool............. then after you have tried these options you could consider other scenarios.

ok I am pretty sure that the drive is not the problem without even checking it because this is my third sony that I have exchanged at walmart and all 3 of them have done exactly the same thing, so lets try something else. Does anyone have any possible solutions that have had this problem or have worked with this problem in the past? If you read all of this thread you would already know that I have tried to use copy dvd and it failed just like nero and yet it works with my old sony burner but again not my new one. ok guys I need to get to bed I have to get up for work in 4 hours, hopefully someone will have the solution that will fix this problem for me when I come back tomorrow after work. Thanks again, Don
