I heard some feedback in some of the other forums that Memorex media basically sucks. Is this true? If so, what are people using? I have a Samsung TS-H552U burner that I just bought.....any recommendations? I have enough drink coasters in my house, I don't need any more.

Memorex are made by CMC Magnetics, not exactly a favorite of many people. Here is an article that will give you breakdown on disks and what to look for. You can use DVD Identifier or DVD InfoPro to check your media.

let's put it this way, if it wasn't for Memorex, these forums would be a lot less busy, and a helluva lot less threads would need to be posted every day!. Memorex et al should be ashamed of the bad press (and bad burns) due to their inferior products. So should Bulkpaq, and Datawrite too..

I'm a Verbatim Datalifeplus (8x) man myself, haven't yet dipped my toe into the Taiyo Yuden's as my Verb's are 100% (from Singapore, Taiwan & India so far). I don't feel the need to buy anything else as i can get these for £8 for 25tubs inc vat, plus shipping of £4.49 up to 10kg.. but will start with 16x Verb's as soon as i've used up last stock of 8x.. (boring i know, but that way i get 100% watchable/copyable films)..

omg they are all actively looking for this stuff!. It takes all sorts, but then ppl do get good results sometimes, trouble is it's a lottery. I wasted so much money & time on crapola media that i just don't want the grief anymore. Shudder - the thought of those 100s of Bulkpaq's that are now unwatchable/un-recopyable. arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh :(

When I read that these guys were running out to buy them on sale, I thought it was hysterical, maybe they know more than us. All I know is I bought a 50 pack Memorex once, in my new burning days, an 60% would not write and the ones that did have CRC errors. Can't believe anyone would recommend them.

with the 1000s of CD's i've burnt over the years there's been a lot of questionable media used, most still work today, the only real problem i ever get is with cheapy silver that falls off the top of the discs. DVD's cause enough grief now - God help us when blu-ray or whatever arrives, just think how much worse it's gonna get!

There will always be something new to test everyone, I am still waiting for DL media to go down in price to see this will work, so far I have not seen a lot of positive feedback on this media, and you really have no choice, either crap Memorex, or excellent Verbatim, I guess within the next few weeks I will give it a shot and see if I make more coasters.

I agree, i'm still not confident that DL media is worth the risk yet, which reminds me, just found something on cd freaks -

http://www.cdfreaks.com/article/201/1

"Earlier this month Verbatim completed the testing of its new 4x DVD-R Dual Layer (DL) media."

snippet from the conclusion -

Whether or not the compatibility issues can be corrected with a firmware update, it is not known at this time. Meaning, we need to see - what will happen in the future. At least the format is very new and we guess it will take some time for it to mature.

My grandson wants Star Wars the older ones, so I might try these. Ordered the Ritek/Ridata DVD+R DL from supermediastore, 5 disks cost me as much as 100 TY's, ouch We will see how they work out.

I've heard good things about Taiyo Yuden as well. And a lot of people stand behind Fuji. I guess you get what you pay for. I was a sucker for the Memorex 25 DVD+R pack sale...... now I know better. You would think some of the Memorex "big-wigs" would look around on sites like this to get some feed-back.

I have used TDK, Fuji, Taiyo Yuden, Maxell all with good results. My favorites by far are Verbatim, especially the ones with the movie reel on them. My drives just purr when they burn them. Best Buy just had them on sale last week and I picked up 75.

Ok, listen to this. I made a DVD movie last night with Pinnacle Studio 9......saved it in DVD format to my hard drive, then used Nero to burn it to a Memorex 8x DVD+R. It ran fine in my PC's DVD drive but I just tried to play it on a newer Sanyo DVD player and my movie froze half way through the movie. Also, the menu chapter functionality is sporatic. Is this again another sign of Memorex's junk?!!!!! I burned this with all the settings set for quality, not speed.

there's junk media, and there's also compatability. Not all standalones can read all discs. I guess problems with compatability contends with media failures for 2 of the most common problems

Ok, then how do I determine the compatability of media versus player? Does writing to a higher quality media give me a better chance that it will play on a majority of DVD players?

better media in itself won't be the only cure; but i'll leave the explanation to the others, i just find other ppl explain it better. Ie i can never remember the specifics of -R format as opposed to +R format and which is better. Basically you can 'booktype' +format discs which makes them appear to players as dvd-rom discs, hence (in theory) more compatible.

But as i say there are others who can explain it more factually than i can. It's easy enough but it's just one detail i can never remember :)

I only use -R discs as i don't see the need for +R (all discs i do work on various standalone machines/PS2/PC's/friend's players) so for me -R on very good Verbatim datalifeplus media is 100%

No they don't know more, they will have to learn the hard way just like the rest of us did. Experience is the best teacher. I read that even mr. pro memorex Viper (leader of the memorex is best club) was having some probs with memorex and was coming to his senses.

Between -r and +r media -r is more compatable, don't quote me, about 94% with -r and about 88% with +r, although +r/rw media booktyped dvd-rom is more compatable than both. New set-top players usually play all without any problems. The -r format wins on older players between -r and +r but again dvd-rom tops them both.

Higher quality media does ensure better chances of the media being compatable on set-top players. Just like on some dvdrw's when you load some memorex or other junk media to burn, the media is not recognized or you get an error of some sort. Here is some good reading. I've got to admit I am a little pro dvd+r.

And with good reason:

DVD-R:
Benefits: Better DVD playback compatiblity within home DVD players.
Drawbacks: Older technology and less money behind the format means that they come out with faster media and burner technology slower. You will frequently see DVD burners that will support (for instance) 16X DVD+R and only 8X DVD-R.

DVD+R:
Benefits: Faster speeds, more inovations like Double Layer discs (8.5 GB)
Drawbacks: Will not play is some home DVD players. If you know your home DVD player will play DVD+Rs then there is no reason to not use them.

As you can see +R is a much better technology, and you can booktype them for -R.

Read article at on DVD's

http://www.videohelp.com/dvd

Better media is a good start to get a quality burn, I also find that the speed you burn at also makes a difference in playback. I usually burn at 4x and no higher than 6x with my Plextor. I have burned at 8x however I found that my 3 year old Toshiba standalone does not like that speed and will not play the disk, however, my new Sanyo and Apex are fine with it.
