Howdy, all.

Having some trouble trying to use DVD Shrink on one of my Star Trek dvds. I have a brand new laptop, so I'm guessing it's probably a conflict with some pre-installed software, but darned if I know what.

Shrink gets started fine, but then hangs up about halfway through encoding, and I have to restart Windows to get out of it. If I analyze it first, it'll make the ISO, but then Decryptor won't burn it. I've tried using Nero Recode with the exact same results. I've uninstalled and reinstalled Shrink & Decryptor several times, and have even tried going back to Shrink 3.17, no luck, same exact results.

The PC came with PowerDVD, which I have never opened, and I installed Nero 6 Ultra (see above), and installed all the six new updates listed on their site.

My computer savy-ness is limited, but I'm determined enough to follow along, even if it gives me a headache.

Any help and suggestions are very much appreciated.

are you getting a CRC error from shrink halfway through your star trek dvd? if so, it might be that particular dvd is either dirty/scratched. what is the error log stating when it freezes up your new computer? more details needed. :)

Have you tried ripping it first to your hardrive with Decrypter and then running it through Shrink? Here is Scuba Pete's Guide for hard to rip disks, try it and see if it makes a difference.

Have you been able to rip other disks successfully, and it is just this disk that is causing you problems? If it is then try cleanin it or take your disk back and get another original.

Actually, as it turns out, it's not freezing, after all. It's just very, very slow. Eventually it starts again, as I discovered this morning. Maybe the CPU is overheating? Anyway, I'm fairly new to burning, but I figure with all these people on here using Shrink & Decrypter, if I'm having a problem, it's something I'm doing wrong, not the programs :)

I was thinking about getting one of those lap pads with extra fans for the notebook to sit on, maybe that'll help. And I'll try ripping it with Decrypter first and see how that goes, thanks for guide link. Wish me luck!

Oh, and I did clean the dvd and checked for scratches, it seems to be fine, and plays fine in both my computer & the player. Should I play it on the computer first before letting Shrink have at it? Thanks much, fellows!

Good news, the cooling pad seems to have done the trick. Now I'm making perfect copies of my DS9 discs in about half an hour. Thanks to everyone who replies with hints and ideas!
