I'm trying to copy a DVD movie and the size after "open disc" says 4579 MB. The compression slider is as far left as it will go in custom ratio at 55.9.

I've encoded it at the Target DVD Size (under 'preferences') of 4580...it encodes but when DVD Decrypter opens up---the file is too big and won't fit on the new blank dvd.

Any suggestions? Should I buy a dual layer DVD and burn it onto that? Is there any thing to do differently when burning onto a dual layer DVD? If I split this DVD into 2 different DVD's how do I preserve the opening navigation/menu titles to be consistent with what's on the DVD (for example: there's 18 chapters and I assume the menu will still list chapters 1-18 on both DVD's even though one disc will only have chapters 1-9 and the other will have chapters 10-18)?

I have the same problem with a 2-disc DVD-box. Don't know the sollution yet, but I'm still trying! Maybe a bit of re-authoring over 3 disks...

If you plan on buying a new DVD-writer go for the Dual layer, it's now standard anyway. However, keep in mind that double layer media is relatively expensive! So a copy may turn out closer to the price of the original...

I have four methods of backups using Shrink allowing a maximum of 30% compression (70% on slider).

1. If the movie will fit, I backup the whole thing.

2. If it's too large, I first eliminate extra audio and subtitles, then change extras to "Still Pictures".

3. If it's still too large, I backup the movie only "Re-author", and use Start/End to trim unneccessary footage.

4. Haven't needed to do this yet, but if it's still to large, will split on two disks.

My goal is to have a quality picture and complete movie. Using other programs like Infoedit and what not is too much hassle for me.

If you set preference in Shrink at 4580 it will come out too big, the default in Shrink is 4464 and I set it to 4300.

Wow... I've always left it at 4464, and I never had a problem. Then again, I always use good media.

@rhgindc - Get rid of extra (replace with still image), foreign languages and subtitles that you'll never use. Personally, I never set compression of the main title to less than 70% -- prefer it to be 85% or higher. Also, some DVDs come with two versions of the movie on it (both wide-screen and full-screen versions). If that's the case here, then pick the one you want and replace the other one with a still image.
