I did a search for Overlapped I/O error and the thread most applicable is too old to post to....so
I was trying to backup 'Paycheck'
don't ask me why.
anyway, i was using my laptop, and scuba pete's guide for shrink and decrypter.
it finds some dummy sections, and i when i run shrink i get the error:
DVD Shrink encountered an error and cannot continue.
Invalid data in file C:\Paycheck
Overlapped I/O operation is in progress.
is that a bad or dirty disc problem?
i tried cleaning off the disc, but it did it again.
i am not using anydvd, just shrink and decrypter. i think i may have dvd43 running in the background.
using laptop, dell xp sp1, 2.66ghz, 384mb ram, hl-dt-st gca-4040n burner, verbatim media
any thoughts?
thx

I'm getting the same message from DVD Shrink. It's been working fine for weeks and then all of a sudden this message pops up while the disc is being analyzed. I have no other programs running and did not make any recent changes to my computer, I had just burned a disc and everything was fine, then on the very next burn I got this message.
Tried different discs and I got the same message.

i just gave up on that disc, every other one is working fine.
i guess it's either a really dirty disc that i can't get clean or a bad pressing and the disc will play but not copy.
i'm surprised at how little info i found on this error using the forum search.
there is usually a handful of people that are somewhat familiar with every problem posted that try to help out - no takers on this error so far.
i'm not sure this would be a media problem, at least not with the blank disc, possibly a problem with the source disc.
check and make sure you have the most recent versions of shrink and decrypter, and try a different source disc and re-check yur preference settings.
i just gave up on the source disc i had a problem with (Paycheck) and moved on, no problems with any others so far

Go into DVD Shrink's Preference's and see if 'Enable overlapped I/O' is checked. If it is, uncheck it and see if that fixes the problem. Some people have reported problems using this option.

should 'Enable overlapped I/O' normally be checked or unchecked?
which way should i normally have it?
what does that actually mean?
i should have my preferences set as described in scuba pete's guide. i don't use any quality enhancements, and usually re-author to only backup the main title
thx

If you have it enabled it can make ripping go faster but sometimes causes errors. If it causes errors you should try without it enabled and if the errors go away you should probably stop using it (at least for the DVD that gave you the errors).

Did you have it running while you used DVD Decrypter?

If you do use DVD Decrypter for the ripping - don't use them at the same time.

i just saw that in a thread somewhere, saying DVD43 could cause problems with decrypter.
i think i've had DVD43 on the laptop for a couple months with no problems. what problems is it supposed to cause with decrypter?
i was using DVD43 since i can't afford AnyDVD right now. i don't think AnyDVD works with win98, so i don't have it installed on the desktop, and the same problem came up on decrypter when i tried to back up that disc on the desktop, so i don't think DVD43 was the problem, though i guess DVD43 could cause some problem with decrypter on occasion...just not sure what problems DVD43 is supposed to cause

@jer2911tx - there are ppl far better at explaining that i, but.. i shall try...
at the moment, there is no film that DVD Decrypter 3.5.4.0 cannot get around, hence no need for DVD43, AnyDVD et etc, to run at the same time, UNLESS ppl are happy to do so. I won't get tangled up in whether or not such and such program conflicts with such and such program. I myself use the tool for the job, whoch at the moment is DVD Shrink on it's own. If i hit an arccos protected filem or something that Shrink can't handle, i call on DVD Decrypter. So far (for me) there's nothing else necessary, however other ppl do thing differently and that's fine.
But there's not really a reason why any of these programs shouldn't co-exist quite happily..

thx creaky
i guess i'll go ahead and uninstall DVD43.
for my desktop, i couldn't even watch a movie that had copy protection, kept getting an error about my video card having a tv out function or something, so i had to install the trial version of AnyDVD just to be able to watch dvds unless i burned a backup without the copy protection
creaky, have you gotten an Overlapped I/O error?
if yes, why and what did you do to get past it?

@jer2911tx - to watch dvd's you probably just need to be able to change the region code. I never have issues wih regions as before i buy a drive i always make sure there is region-free firmware available for it. Then i use dvdgenie (currently version 4.10) to launch the software dvd player of your choice. Or you could just run the software player.
keep DVD43 running if you don't go down the region-free firmware route ; if you have a dvd-rom drive and a dvd burner you could region-free the dvd-rom drive; as for my dvd burner, it's a lite-on so i can use a lite-on util to change regions if i need to.
But... i never need to mess with regions as my dvd-rom is region-free, and i can't remember when i last region-unlocked my dvd burner, it's been so long. So as i say, regions are not an issue for me.
Either way, don't uninstall DVD43. Just experiment with running it/not running it 'til you find out why things aren't playing happily.
Looks like there's a bug in v3.5.3 of DVD43 - http://www.afterdawn.com/software/video_software/dvd_rippers/dvd43.cf m
As for errors such as the overlapped one, i rarely have any of these problems myself; i mostly learn about them along the way, or copy/paste things i find, to help others..

the desktop is where i couldn't play dvds until i loaded AnyDVD.
my old dvd rom drive apparently conked out, so i installed a $20 dvd rom from fry's and a lite-on 1673 burner.
neither would play a dvd, it would start up on the menu ok, then conk out and give me the error about the video card not having the tv connection disabled, or something.
found a link here saying it was the copy protection, or something, loaded the trial version of AnyDVD and they both played fine.
can't afford AnyDVD right now, but if i use shrink and decrypter to back my dvd up, i can watch that backup with no problems.
what is the link for the lite-on specific utility?
thx
