hi mort,

thanks~! about time eh? hehe..anyways, yeah, im in a very similar boat as you~ well, not a REAL boat like SOME people on here, but, figurtively speaking :P

i know my media like the back of my hand, and i also knows what works on MY OWN setup, if people have similar setups, i can lend a hand, but, i don't do any of those "file conversion" dvd compliant stuff myself and wouldn't know where to even begin on that~ :P

honest truth is, we ALL have some area of specialty~ while i'd like to think MINE is in dvd-media, others vary from hardware, software, shrink, decrypter, dvd players, etc..etc..the list continues.

all these other backup/burning programs that people use...i got no clue~ some have better quality, some are faster...well, i only have a few under my belt. naturally, i know shrink, decrypter, clonedvd2, intervideo dvdcopy3, and from wayyy long time ago, i still have dvdxcopy platinum and dvdcloner2(old version of shrink) :P

it's a learning process, im still figuring out new things every day, the ONLY thing i can claim to be "knowing what i'm talkin about" is MEDIA~ :)

as ddp would say, live and learn~ i agree w/ him 100% :)

Congrats, on your bump

@Mort81

I am with you I can give answers on backups, but file downloading is not my thing, so I can only give general answers in that area. I am still working on reading those d@#n Nero logs, but I am improving, usually there is someone around that can read them a whole lot better, like Creaky :~)

- Nero logs are easy; (Nerovision whatever that is) logs are horrendously long but seem almost as straighforward; i home in on the Nero logs as they seem very simple, and quick to blast thru. Plus they seem to me to be the most common logs i come across round here. I'm not so quick with other product logs, but then again i guess i don't go looking for them. ps nice one on the bump also, i could have sworn you were already a Senior (my memory, grumble grumble)

- i needed to get off the computer & finish watching an episode of 'Taken' around midnight as have to prise myself out of bed at 05:30 for work ; it's 8am now and am just catching up on a few posts to get my mind interested in work. yesterday was a bank holiday in UK (yup you guessed it, i went to a boat show) so it's a tad harder to motivate one's self but hey, only 4days left for the working week. yay :)

@mort81 - i'm sure i mentioned it before but am always on the lookout for your posts re media choices (and the dry humour)

Creaky, where dyu get your Verbatim from in the UK? ive seen them for £35/100, but thats like nearly double what i pay for my discs! are they really that good?! i have a very low movie-to-coaster ratio with Ritek/ProDisc dye, will Verbs' give me 100% success?

@BigPantz, see my sig. I buy my 8x Verbs (-R, but only cus i started out with -R and have zero problems anywhere i or others use them) from http://www.svp.co.uk, they're usually about £8 a 25tub (inc vat) - i find that is very reasonable. postage is £4.49, but for up to 10kg so you can order loadsa stuff for that same postage cost. I'm like a mini-Kivory666, he loves TY, then Verbs; i love Verbs but finally caved in and decided to try some TY, but only from svp as over here it seems it's hard to find genuine TY, if any TY. It was partly as i get in the midst of a lot of media threads and can only quote a couple brands from experience, with a dose of copy/paste of other ppl's posts where i trust their experience to pass on to others (in fact i just noticed i said the same thing further up the thread - spooky!).
I tend to buy in a 100 at a time as it lasts a while, though now i've ordered the TY i am way overstocked for a while. I've only had 2 Verb coasters and they were my fault/lack of RAM; i've since doubled my RAM so no more probs.

*runs around the room screaming my ty03 are here. Had to jump in and gives thanks especially to creaky and kivory for beating into my skull taiyo yudens and verbatims are the way to go. After the excitement wore off I must have backed up 4 movies already with dvd decrypter and DVD Shrink with anydvd running in the background. Ooops got off topic...anyway to all those who go out and spend money on cheap media let me say I am a reformed cheap media buyer. TYs are the way to go and verbatims are a very close second. It surprises me how many folks post about media related issues and then never follow up with a thank you or even the outcome of a recommendation. No wonder I never seem to see a mod or admin posting except to "correct" erroneous postings. I think I will stick around in the dvd-media section and take notes from kivory and creaky so I can pick up some more knowledge about media preferences/ types. Dang it I forgot I need to keep a close eye on arniebear too since he pops in on the regular.

to burn or not to burn that is the question

need help w/ media read this http://forums.afterdawn.com/thread_view.cfm/155431

There are many others around here too to look out for, i won't name them cus i know i'll miss some out (they know who they are); i'm just a mere newb around here and i take heed of the long-termers and try to be as helpful as possible. Plus my TY turn up today (soz i'm sure i mentioned that already) so i will no doubt be posting good things about them soon..

You're right, not many ppl say thanks, or even come back and follow up their threads at the very least. I hate that purely as it leaves those that do search before posting, with an incomplete part of the puzzle.

no worries; i have high hopes for the TY (TYG02) i ordered, they should be waiting fo me when i finish work. ps svp are great (i think so anyway) - i bought some big unwieldy dvd cases that i needed to return to them, but didn't want to go to the Post Office with them. Anyway it turned out that svp were going to collect them anyway, so (apart from the courier messing about for a couple days) i had a refund sorted in a few days. I buy all my Verbs thru them at the moment.

@BigPants, (re the 90min cdr's). I used to be mad on overburning CD's (wouldn't trust DVD's for that but i digress) as those pesky record companies/artists would always make albums over 80mins. Plus when i was downloading loads of movies not all of them would fit on an 80min cd. But i stopped downloading, and for albums i just miss off a track as it's quicker, and then discovered dvd's. Ahh bliss

i know what your saying creaky bout knocking a track of the end of the album, i do this already. my mate is a DJ & when i get mix CD's off him they are always slightly over 80 mins. i usually have to take off half of the last track with Nero to copy it, & sort of spoils the mix for me.. he has a stadalone cd recorder linked up to his decks & has to fill an audio CD-R completely for it to finalize properly, thats why they run over a bit.
