there is a sale at future shop (canada) for 25 memorex duel layer dvds for $100. I know memorex is not the greatest brand but is this worth it?

I just tried my first dual layer burn using Ritek from supermediastore and burn went fine, burn tested out good. There are better brands than Memorex and at the price of dual layer media you really do not want to be making a lot of coasters. My two cents :~)

I don't have any verification, but read somewhere that memorex dl media is made by CMC MAG. That should say it all.

The Future Shop flyer got my attention on that item too. I am leary about Memorex media also, but only from the stories on this site. Before I knew better I had burnt quite a few blank Memorex DVDs about 100 or so and not one coaster that was the medias fault. I Recently purchased a 3 pack of DL Memorex more for curiosity at $20C all worked out great using Decrypter, media manufactered by Ricoh. Using DL media is certainly more expensive, but for 1:1 copies they are great. After my luck with the 3 pack I have convinced myself to go get a 25 pack $4 each is a bargain compared to prices 3 months ago.
As a comparison to how we all get shafted by retailers Best Buy has a 15 pack of the same media for the bargin price of $80C

As long as they are ricohjpn you shouldn't have any problems, good media, but if it's like their dvd5 media and is made by several different companys it's not worth the gamble (for me anyway) to risk getting some crap CMC Mag or never know what you're going to get from batch to batch. Personally if I was to buy some dvd9 media it would be verbatum.

looks like many people are jumping on the VERB bandwagon...first it was the TY fan club, now Verbs~

when the price goes down, i'll try some Verb dual layer, still too pricey for me, im sure they work great though, as with all MCC media i've used...almost a thousand now...they are flawless~ :)

for me personally, i stay away from ANYTHING made by Memorex in terms of optical media...been burned once, and that is ALL i need to never buy them again~ :)

CompUSA has 3 pack of dual layer +R Verbs for 20.00. Not a bad price if you want to try them out I ordered the Ritek from supermediastore, but I want to pick up this 3 pack to see how they burn :~)

Memorex/CMC et al can't even make single layer discs that work / or that are even consistent in being crap. They fool ppl into buying them by giving a few good burns, but then generate huge amounts of traffic on sites such as this due to the hassle they cause so many ppl. And Memorex/CMC et al being let loose on dual layer media. The mind boggles..

Oh and Imation are crap too, really crap. I'v been 'burnt' by them and so has a colleague for work-related data burns. Due to errors on the discs, he always CRC checks them on one or 2 of our Unix servers which generates loads and loads of errors on the syslogs. To get around this he makes 2 or more likely 3 exact copies of each dataset (all done at 1x or 2x), and all give different errors. I think he's only made one or 2 error-free discs on Imation and he's been doing this a year or 2 over untold 100s of Imation discs.. Which reminds me, i gave him a Verb 8x disc to try to prove to the boss that they need to stop putting our customers' data at risk on those Imation discs. Must chase him to use it so i can PIF scan the resultant burn.
EDIT- i updated the first link in my signature with a PIF scan of the Verbatim disc that he used, but the Imation disc was unreadble in both of my drives so it got binned.

Stick with Verb or another top brand, there's no cost difference with single layer discs so that doesn't justify buying crap; i don't know what DL media costs but i suspect when they've been around a while there will be little cost difference compared to crap media; i haven't used Verb's DL media yet but am sure they will be a-ok.

Prodiscs from my experience are descent budget media but don't belong in the same catagory as verbatum or taiyo yuden. They will burn ok and play ok if burned with my benq 1620 but my litey doesn't like them at all (high PI,PIF spikes) Verbs and TY's perform well with both my burners.

from my VERY limited experience w/ prodisc, i would have to agree w/ mort81 on this one. i think it is generally agreed by many on AD that TY and Verbs are the way to go~

some burners will burn prodisc nicely, while others (the burners i have personally) are more finicky with them~ it depends on individual setup, but, more often than not, just save yourself the trouble and go with TRUSTED, GOOD media and your problems will be drastically lowered~ :P

as i've said before, burn with the best or fail like the rest~ how i came up with that line, no idea...lack of sleep probably~ :P

Well I did it again, due to the lack of 16x media in the stores I bought Memorex 16x+ CMC M01 and boy am I sorry. I burned one movie with the 16x CMC and them the same movie with Verbatim MCC004 16x, the times were similar but the CMC disc had all kinds of errors and skipping and the Verb was perfect. I could probably be successful at 4x or 8x but I am thankful I only through 9.99 away. I am going to stick with TY'S and Verbs from now on.

well, i think personal opinion on media can be summed up well based on PERSONAL experience~ :P you have just proven it again ALAND~ :)

stay on the TY/Verb bandwagon, as your own tests have proven, reliability only comes w/ trusted media~ i have had great success on the MCC004 as well, great media in my opinion~

good luck w/ your future burns~ :)

I am sorry but I just have to ask this question. Why would anyone use a dual layer DVD when there are so many great compression programs out there that are almost 1:1. They are way more money, you have to use more of them and I just don't see an upside.

I used them on my boxed set of Star Wars, I wanted an exact copy of the movie. When you have movies the size of LOTR you really do not want to take a 3 hour movie and compress it down to 50%.

@ arniebear

wow, so you've tried them and your Plexie loves them??? GOOD ENOUGH INFO FOR ME~! :) i will have to try them next time i go media shopping~ i know they are more expensive, but, with LARGER/LONGER films such as LOTR w/ EXACT COPY...these would be perfect~ :)

thanks for your input and advice, i will pick a few up next time i am picking up more media~ :P

@kivory666, i just don't see the need yet to go DL. I'm only ever interested in movie-only copies so i probably won't bother with DL media. As long as Shrink & Decrypter etc keep working for me i'll stick with single layer methinks..
