I feel TY are the best, based on performance and others posts. However, there is also other excellent media out there such as Sony, Verbatim, Maxell, etc. Taiyo Yuden is for the most part only available online, and sometimes not accessible to posters. It is easier to recommend a brand they can buy retail to get them up and burning. A majority of posters do not know the difference in media, or have any idea what media codes mean, they only want to burn. When you buy retail there is really no way you can tell what you are buying it can only be based on what is known to work, and Verbatim has that track record. I have five burners and not one has ever rejected Verbatim, and I have had no coasters or error-ridden disks. Therefore, based on my experience I recommend this brand to others. I also recommend that if they can then purchase TY. In the end though it all comes down to personal preference, what works for the person and the burner that is used.

Arniebear I know what you mean..... I can only say what works for me and I've learned soooooooooo much this past month it's like a technological boom for me and my mind is like a sponge soaking it up!!!!! I have used Sony, Maxell, and Verbatim,too... with much success........... but what I just found out from scubba last night,to my surprise, is that brands can change manufacturers and go from great to so so to crap! I have old Memorex that I used to use 3 and 4 years ago cause I didn't know any better... it was easy to go to the store and just pick them up....... so I was very new to burning........ and now I have DVDInfo Pro... it shows them listed ast Ricohjpn ..... and I feel much better about them! I was worried that they would turn to crap and be unreadable, with errors as time goes on. At least they aren't the CMC crap! And now I know that I can get TYs (my prefference disk) online and it will come to me in just a matter of a few days! I ordered them when I'm half way down the spool of 50! This way I always have them onhand. I read others are going out and buying disks at 100 and then going out again worried that they will outlaw blank media! Is that paranoia or what? Is there any basis of truth for that?

maybe there was need to be paranoid when CD blank media first came out (my god is was expensive). i and a few friends would always travel to specialist computer shops just for a few boxes of top quality branded media, in boxes of ....... 10!. we did feel that the police would stop us half way down the road for carrying contraband in the form of so much blank media

IHoe,

You are real lucky! That is great they did not die off. i am going to go through my dvd collection and see what died off. I was cheap at the time when i bought the memorex and tdk and was just a noob at the time. But now I understand the concept you get what you pay for when it comes to media.

last night i was going thru my discs and there are soooo many crappy Bulkpaq FAKE TYG02 disks (sorry bad media gets me real angry!) in my collection and decided for a laugh to re-copy some of them (i think i did 4 in the end and gave up). It took ages and numerous swaps between my 2 drives to get all the files off as these are such crap discs. The thought of doing any more winds me up no end so back to my originals and start again i think. This is why i no longer tolerate middle of the range or questionable media, and only buy/recommend top notch media.

I sincerely doubt you could outlaw blank media it used for too many other things such a data, and I use it for my camcorder videos, and also on my DVD Recorder, which as of yet they have not stated is illegal. As for my past backups, since I learned early on about crap media, cough, Memorex, cough. I have weeded out all the bad, thank god would not have to go back and redo any. Did find one done on crappy liquid video, and talk about CRC errors.

I burned like 80 disks and i had them all in a cabinet...well my wife was moving around some stuff and they all fell about ten feet and hit the ground....now mind you they were all in plastic cases but almost none of them worked they were 6 months old and a mixture of tdk and compusa...oh the price you pay for being a noob... lol

The Verb I bought in Best Buy this weekend did not say Data Life Plus but they have the same media code as the Data Life Plus. I have heard they are the same, but who know.

Compusa are the worst... you need to handle them in a radioactive jumpsuit you can't ever drop them or touch them or even play them becuase they don't work..you will get crc errors in like 2 days after burning them... they are the worst... I has like 50 left i threw them away!

How can u tell what type of memorex disks u have? Ive made many backups using memorex with no problems but after reading this thread it made me feel nervous that i wasted my time burning these backups.

Also, can someone explain what exactly happens to these disks that has all these people bashing them.

thanks in advance.

Memorex equals dead disk in less then 6 months. Bottom line if they work for you swell but in the end they won't last

believe me when i say i'm always on a budget, and i can no longer waste money on iffy media - it simply is not saving money to buy crap as it WILL 300% let you down. Period. Anyone that says different is welcome to throw their money at me instead. And i still wouldn't waste it on crap media but would still only recommend Verbatim datalifeplus - top notch media - no more expensive than nasty media. As anyone who reads my posts will tell you, i detest bad media with a passion, it's just plain wrong.

download dvdinfopro (free) and run one of your disks thru it's media info check & paste results here. We'll promise not to laugh !

edit- look on page one of this very thread -
Quote:
Memorex/CMC et al can't even make single layer discs that work / or that are even consistent in being crap. They fool ppl into buying them by giving a few good burns, but then generate huge amounts of traffic on sites such as this due to the hassle they cause so many ppl. And Memorex/CMC et al being let loose on dual layer media. The mind boggles..

Stick with Verb or another top brand, there's no cost difference with single layer discs so that doesn't justify buying crap; i don't know what DL media costs but i suspect when they've been around a while there will be little cost difference compared to crap media; i haven't used Verb's DL media yet but am sure they will be a-ok.

All media that is made in Taiwan is not bad, this is a misconception. Just because it is labeled Taiwan does not mean pass it up. I would purchase a Fuji disk over CompUSA, Princo, or Memorex any day. Fuji has not had a track record of marketing bad media.
