your burn speed in Shrink/Nero is down to a combination of your writer &/or media you are using. Ive got some Printable Ritek G05 at the moment & my Sony writer will write them at 4x & 8x, but my external Emprex writer will write them at 2x, 4x, 6x & 8x.. if you get some decent 4x (Ritek, ProDisc, Verbatim, Taiyo Yuden etc.) media you should be able to burn them at 2x, no problem.

not sure, havent heard of them. give them a try though! if youre looking for a cheap disc for your burns try DataWrite (Yellow or Grey ones, not the Red ones, Ive had many probs with DataWrite Red). theyre pretty good. the 4x or 8x will most probably burn at 2x if you want them to.

Encoding problems are not down to blank media, that'll normally be down to the movie you are trying to encode. does shrink freeze with every movie you try to encode or are you having problems with a particuar film?
another good program to try is DVD Decrypter & its free, just like shrink. its more of a ripping tool than anything else, if i get any probs with shrink doing its job i do this :-
-Rip the film to your hard drive as an ISO image with Decrypter
-open up shrink, go file, open disc image, select ISO image
-encode movie with shrink & you can either burn it out with Nero or DVD Decrypter.
Here are the guides for using decrypter & shrink, they can probably explain better than i can..

I agree you should get DVDDecrypter, there are several problematic movies that Shrink cannot handle. Also, as an alternative you can rip your movie in file mode with Decrypter and use Nero Recode to encode and burn, this will allow you to choose your burn speed. I think Recode is faster than Shrink, and does a really good job. There is a guide available below on this process.

I wouldn't uninstall Shrink, you never know when you will need it, it is always good to have a backup program, and Shrink is free. My two cents :~)

@ferral4 - sounds like your dvd burner needs newer firmware. let us have your drive specs
As for DVD Shrink, as arniebear say, don't give up on it. The author has moved on to other things, aka Nero Recode, so no more updates to Shrink, BUT it depends what you use it for. I predominately use Shrink, and have done since i got into DVD burning. I only ever do movie-only myself which is why i have better success than most who have trouble with protections. The handful of films with newer encryptions i've simply used DVD Decrypter as the author lightning uk has been keeping it bang up to date with the newer encryptions. Plus he's always heavily involved on the official decrypter site making sure those newer encryptions are kept at bay

ok, i've re-read this thread a couple times. Just noticed you seem to be using media called Laser. It would appear to be atrocious media -
Laser DVD+R 8x *Special 10 Spindle* (MCC003) Rl..c
Laser DVD+RW 2.4x (...........)
Laser DVD-R 2x (MXL RG01....)
Laser DVD-R 4x (AML.........)
Laser DVD-R 4x (AN31........)
Laser DVD-R 4x (AN32........)
Laser DVD-R 4x (PRINCO......)
Laser DVD-R 4x (VANGUARD....)
Laser DVD-R 8x (TYG02) ??FAKE??
And as for 'aki' media, haven't heard of those...hmmmmm.....my bad media sensor is tingling.....
Try this; download dvdinfopro (free trial) and run media info; this will give you the media details (including the media id code, that's in brackets above). Copy/paste the results here, though whatever code you do have, it would seem that all laser are of mediocre quality at best
ps classic symptom of freezing and skipping movies, is bad media (get better media)

I would recommend Verbatim (datalifeplus, not just datalife) myself as your Lite-on will love them
Here's a snippet of Verb info (the media code we were talking about earlier is in brackets below).
For example, with the older datalife, most show as made by CMC - most ppl would say these are the worst discs ever made, period. The RicohJapan would probably be very good, but you'd have to be able to find them.
Verbatim DataLife DVD+R 2.4x (CMC MAG.R01)
Verbatim DataLife DVD+R 4x (RICOHJPNR01)
Verbatim DataLife DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG. AF1)
Verbatim DataLife DVD-R 2x (CMC MAG.AF01)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R 12x (MCC.....003)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R 4x (MCC.....002)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R 4x Pastel (YUDEN000-T01-000)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R 8x (MCC.....003)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R 8x Advanced AZO (MCC.....003)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD+R 8x Printable (MCC 003)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R 4x (MCC 01RG20)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R 4x (TYG01.......)
Verbatim DataLifePlus DVD-R 8x Advanced AZO (MCC02RG20)
Now see those datalifeplus - all top quality (the MCC are Mitsubishi Chemical Company, Verb's parent company). The TY and Yuden are Taiyo Yuden so they will be very good. I myself only use the 8x -R Verbs as i've had so much good quality results/compatability ie the -R plays on everything i have used them on. However you would probably be better to go with the +R as you can book-type them with your liteon, to 'appear' as standard dvd-rom discs; this way standalone players will be happier with them as they will think they are standard dvd-rom discs. Here's the spec of your drive which details the various write speeds your drive is capable of on the different formats - http://www.liteon.com/prod/getProduct.do?xml_id=4_2&menu_id=4_2_7...
- a quick look at that seems to show the max +R supported is 16x, and the max -R is 8x. So you'd probably be best off buying 8x +R or even 4x +R if you can still find them.
Others will recommend other discs such as TY etc. I myself only caved in and bought some TY yesterday so have only done half a dozen burns and only tested 2 of them. However they are top quality genuine TY discs, you just you have to be careful where you get them as they are the most faked brand (as are supposed to be the best blank DVDs you can get). I usually stick to Verbs for this reason myself.
Hope that helps
