i'm happy with my verbatims....my laptop burner isn't too picky with media, though i have had a couple dvds play on one player and freeze up in another, but my desktop's lite-on seems very picky with dvd media, and verbatim has worked out great in both laptop and desktop.

haven't tried ty or yuden specifically, but can't you get dvds made by ty or yuden under another brand name like sony or fuji?
/still kinda new at figuring out the media stuff, happy to get stacks of 100 verbs for $26 and $34 the last couple times

usually burn with laptop: dell, XP SP1, P4 2.66ghz, 384mb RAM, HL-DT-ST DVD +RW GCA-4040N burner

desktop: dell, Win 98, P3 800mhz, 512mb RAM, Lite-On 1673 burner, cheapo DVD-Rom drive

media i am currently using: verbatim - MCC-003

costco has a 50 pack of tdk for like $20 or so, but i seem to hear bad things about them (though i used about 50 in my laptop fine, desktop's lite-on didn't like them at all).
i wish fry's would carry a decent brand of dvd, and in 100 and 50 packs....
my wife thinks i'm crazy,
i think it's good to have a hobby

this is a great hobby~ my wife has thought i was crazy bringing home hundreds of media for over a year now~ :P

there is still a chance of getting the worst possible CMC MAG w/ TDK media, i would be careful~ 50/50 chance..odds are NOT in your favor~

i have suggest over a dozen times on this forum alone that if people wanted Taiyo Yuden locally, at least here in the United States, look for the MADE IN JAPAN for Fuji and Sony 8x dvd+r media...the made in taiwans could be either prodisc or sony's own media ID...the media codes for the 8x DVD+r in my sig. are in reference to the Fuji MIJ and Sony MIJ dvd+r 8x format~

fry's DOES have fuji available but, the pricing is not as good as when best buy has their sales on media~ $0.40/disc = $20/50pk or $40/100 pack is considered a DECENT price for genuine TYs.~ just wait for the sales, they come around fairly often`

Recommended Media:

I think the 50 pack of tdk +r i saw at costco was made in taiwan, so I didn't want to bother (would probably work in my latop, but every so often i'd get one that would play in only certain dvd players)....of course now i'm down to about 10 blank dvds and the amazon delivery probably won't come in until the 16th (damn super-saver shipping).
So I may need to buy an emergency interim stack from someone and try to gauge it better

so....
the media (+r only) worth getting at
Fry's - Fuji (Made in Japan)
Best Buy - Verbatim or Sony (Made in Japan)
does walmart carry sony or anyone worth getting in an emergency?

If you are going to get disks in a pinch from WalMart I recommend the Maxell's they are made in Japan, I picked up a 10 Pack of the colored ones, with cases, for 7.99 and they tested out very good. My two cents.

80 cents a piece? ouch.
i'll probably try to get a 50 pack somewhere, just hoping for the best price available, with something made in japan or singapore, i guess.
the worst luck i've had so far has been with maxell media from fry's, so i try to stay away from them.
i guess i need to figure out how to plan ahead better and keep a standby supply around

@jer

when looking for media locally in EMERGENCY cases such as the one you described, until your online order arrives...i think you have a few points confused...

FUJI and SONY dvd+r 8x rated media found at best buy/compusa/etc. are the TAIYO YUDENS ONLY if they are MADE IN JAPAN , the taiwanese produced ones are NOT.

secondly, if you actually find a VERBATIM made in japan, please let me know...i have never heard of a such thing as ALL their media now is made in TAIWAN. (older stock was made in singapore/india but NEVER japan from what i know). :P

the Verbatims with the MCC003 coding that i have grown to adore and use frequently are MADE IN TAIWAN...just wanted to clarify that for you~ since you said...
Quote:

i have had fairly good results with the Maxell media that arniebear suggested, but as with different people and different burners, mileage may vary on this one~

good luck finding some temporary quick fix media while waiting for your order to arrive...just wanted to make sure you KNOW what you are looking for locally before you get stuck with some poor media, i've had THAT misfortune and found out the hard way years ago when they would not let me return an opened spindle at the store~ :)

thx for the help.
i followed a link posted by creaky that gave the scoop on verbatims, and why they are the only media worth using that is 'made in taiwan'

circuit city (here, anyway) had complete crap for media, don't think walmart carries anything decent, either.
best buy at least had some sone (made in japan)
i don't think fry's carries anything decent other than fuji (japan) and i haven't heard much on fuji either way.
i'm gonna fill out a request at costco for them to carry something other than tdk (taiwan), like sony or better.

the tdk have worked ok for my laptop, with the occasional dvd that would freeze up in some dvd players, but the worst luck i've had has been with maxell, so i stay away from them.
i just need to keep an extra spindle on hand, guess i should go ahead and order another 100 pk of verbatim from amazon while they are still $34, since that's the cheapest i can find.
still waiting on my refund from newegg from the last 100 pk of verbs, but it was too nice a price ($26 after rebate for 100 pk) to pass up for a newb like me.

i got a 50 pk from best buy last night, sony, $39....didn't open it, wanted to check today for any sales they may have at best buy or fry's

/hoping when Lightning UK! goes into retirement he'll be known as Lightning Antigua!

I'd take those Sony's back you can usually pick a 50 pack spindle up for 19.99 when Staples, Office Max, CompUSA or Best Buy have a sale. Check the sunday mornings sale ads, you will get a better price :~)

agreed w/ arniebear, you paid about DOUBLE for the 50 pack of sonys :)

i got all my sony 8x dvd+r from the compusa sales..MIJ...Yuden coding~ :)

i know you are in "emergency mode: on" for dvd-media, but, at least here in the U.S., a GOOD/DECENT price for media bought locally would be about $0.40/disc. or $20/50pk or $40/100pk. just want to save you some money jer~ :P i wouldn't even pay $0.80/disc now for TY inkjet printables, let alone normal non-printable ones~ :) hope you kept the receipt and didn't fall into temptation to break the seal and burn away this weekend~ :) good luck Jer~

lol, thanks for the suggestions.
and arniebear, i did find some maxells at walmart that were made in japan, so i took back the sony dvd +r to best buy (the sony 50 pk had 'Japan' all over it, since sony is based in japan, but the dvds were actually made in taiwan). Walmart had some injet printables ($15 for 25) and some not ijp for ($13 for 25), which i got to hold me over. cheaper than the sony 50 pk for $39, and they were made in taiwan!
i'm hoping the amazon 100 pk of verbs gets here this week. damn super saver shipping is kicking my ass, i gotta order ahead next time.

first of all, this site rocks! i was doing a little research before getting my pioneer dvd 109, after reading various threads on this site i decided to go for it and i am very happy with the burner. however, i bought memorex 8x dvd+r's (before reading some comments here I might add) and i am very unhappy with them. any suggustions on the best media, especially in regards to getting as close to the 4.7GB limit as possible? i am getting all kinds fo write errors with the memorex (at the end of the burn) and am not even getting close to 4.7GB total.
thanks,

You are going to get errors if you burn too close to the edge especially with cheap media. Just because the disk says 4.7 does not mean that is the actual wriat space, it is more like 4.45 and you are better setting it at 4364 or below. The best media in my opinion is Taiyo Yuden, mostly available online, a close second is retail Verbatim and Sony. Here is a list

http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm

You can download DVDIdentifier or DVDInfoPro to find out what king of media you have for comparison.

Reputable online dealers are

http://www.supermediastore.com
http://www.meritline.com
http://www.rima.com

You can oftentimes purchase a 100 TY's for what you pay retail, with free shipping. Also with those Memorex keep the burning speed down to 4x, because of there inconsistent quality. I prefer to burn at 4x but have done up to 8x with no problems on TY, Verbatim and Sony.

gracious, i am looking at supermedia right now. I was getting close to 4.4GB, but that was as high as I was going. I think it is the media more than anything (cheap). I was writing to these disks at 12x at around 3.7GB and that worked fine (although they are rated at 8x). by the way, the 1.50 flash for the pioneer 109 the bumped the drive up to 12x speeds, wrong forum i know, but i thought i would add that anyways. perhaps i should read before sending, lol

hey arniebear, that first link provided a lot of info (definitely filled in some gaps for me), thanks! http://www.digitalfaq.com/media/dvdmedia.htm
i'm going to try the taiyo yuden, $21.00 for a spindle of 50 at supermedia, the product code is DVD01X0165. not sure i really care about them being printable, but the price looks pretty decent.

Dell has the 8X Verbatim's for less than $0.50/disc everyday. A lot of times ground shipping is free as well. As far as the TY's, I haven't found anyone that beats SuperMediaStore...

good choice~ grey99, my pioneer dvr-109 can burn those TYs mentioned @ 16x, which i DON'T do, but, CAN do for fun~ i keep my burns @8x for those TYs~ same goes w/ my Verbs~ but, feel free to keep ur burning lower if that will ease your mind a bit, im just comfortable burning @8x since i've noticed all my discs are the same in quality whether i burn @4x or @8x~ if you use GOOD quality media, such as those TYs or Verbs, @8x should NOT be a problem~ :)
